Gamo First thoughts on my new Arrow!

Hey everyone I've been watching the reviews on the Gamo arrows for a while and finally decided to crack the wallet and get one. Got it in the other day and put a few rounds of it this afternoon. This was just with the fiber optic open sights at 20 yards. I'm pretty impressed. Not bad for almost dusk and shooting from the inside of a dark shed. Although my shot count doesn't show it I got probably a full five magazines out of it. And it still had some air in the tube. I got to say I was a little surprised with the blistering speeds this thing was shooting 14.3 grain CPHPs. And I'm pretty happy with the little group at 20 yards. I'm going to throw a scope on it and do a head-to-head accuracy testing with it and my Notos soon.

I've noticed Gamo is advertising the .22 Arrow with the wood stock as being able to shoot up to 1,200 fps (alloy pellets), 29.5 fpe, and 40 shots between fills, but the .22 Arrow with the polymer stock as only being able to shoot up to 900 fps, 17 fpe, and 60 shots between fills. I've messaged Gamo and asked if the internals are different between them or if they're the same but the wood stock Arrow is just tuned to the highest power setting. Not surprisingly, they haven't responded to my question. I have read that it is possible to adjust the power level on the Arrow in the same manner as the Gamo Urban is adjusted, so I'm going to do a little experimenting this weekend with some 14.3 CPHPs, my chronograph and a 4mm allen key.

I'll report back with my findings.

You bring up a good point JRW911. I was also expecting @60 shots based on previous information (which is one of the reasons I bought it) but I'm not complaining with the 40-50 I'm getting. It does make you wonder if the internals are different. I'll find out exactly how many I get in a few days, if weather holds.

I thought the different specs listed for the wood stock Arrow vs the polymer stock Arrow on the Gamo website was a misprint, but your chrono results would indicate the wood stock Arrow is indeed considerably more powerful than the polymer version. More power and wood stock for only $10 more?!?! Seems like a no-brainer to me!

On a side note, I lucked up and got my polymer Arrow from Pyramyd Air for under $150 (on sale for $169.99 and I used a 13% off coupon), so I'm definitely happy with it as my first PCP for the price I paid. However, if I had paid full price, I would be returning it and getting the wood stock version instead.

Wow! You got a total steal for that price. PA has the polymer Arrow for $219, and I got wood stock version from Gamo at $239 and I'm pleased with that. I'm gonna do some side-by-side comparisons with it and my Notos tomorrow if possible.

I returned my Arrow for 2 main reasons:
-bad accuracy past 30 yards
-poor build quality, plastic everywhere (read my review)
You know...funny you should mention that...even though I've watched a lot of vids about the accuracy of this (even out to 80yds) when I went out to shoot this afternoon, it didn't like it at all. If it's not raining tomorrow I'm going to go back out and do some more lead runs. The CPHPs I thought might just be off because of low pressure, so I tried Gamo Red Fires (which all my Gamo break barrels love). Wow. no consistent POI at all. I bounced back into the house to chat with Gamo about a return RMA, but alas, they were gone for the weekend. I'm hoping to get a better feel for it tomorrow. I'm also wondering if it makes a diff polymer vs wood stock versions, as JRW911 mentioned above. Oh, and I'm at 40 shots with the tail end really dropping off.

In .22 it may be more accurate than in .177 at longer distances.
I did not buy a .22 since my .22 Gamo Urban is already very accurate.

I did some shooting with my polymer stock .22 Arrow this weekend over the chrono.

Let's start with the bad:

1) With a full charge, I'm only averaging right around 650 fps using 14.3 grain CPHPs. That's about 50 fps lower than it should be, I believe.

2) Also on a full charge, I'm only getting around 40 full power shots. After that, the fps starts dropping into the 630s and 620s.

The good:

1) My backyard is only 30 yards at it's maximum distance, so my Arrow is more accurate than I need it to be. The splatter target was 25 yards away and I was getting consistent 1/4" or smaller groups.

2) I bought it for pest control (squirrels) as my Crosman F4 break barrel is way too inaccurate. I got tired of either wounding the squirrels or missing them altogether. We're only taking about, on average, 10 yard shots. I tried 3 different scopes on the break barrel with similar poor results. Although my Arrow is only putting out around 13.5 fpe, it's still more than enough energy to put down every single squirrel I've shot with it so far with one shot. I've yet to have to take a follow-up shot. I'm getting complete pass thrus with head shots.

3) I got it on super sale thru PA. Only paid $147.89 + tax. I did some research beforehand and knew it was mostly polymer, so I was neither surprised nor disappointed when it arrived.

All that being said, I'm at a crossroads on what to do next. I'm contemplating on contacting PA about getting a replacement that shoots advertised speeds. However, the other part of me doesn't feel the need to bother with the hassle of returning this one since I can't kill these squirrels in my backyard any deader than I am with my current Arrow.

Well, after some deliberation, I decided to contact PA and exchange my Arrow for another one in the hopes that it would shoot closer to the velocities many YouTube reviewers were getting with theirs. The new one came in the mail last night, and I just got done putting it over the chrono a few minutes ago. The first Arrow I had was maxing out in the 645-650 fps range with the 14.3 CPHPs, but the replacement just averaged 734 fps with the same pellets. Much more pleased with that result 👍🏼

It all depends on one's desires and expectations. If one is looking for an accurate long range rifle capable of 1 inch groups at 100 yards while giving them 40 fpe then they should look elsewhere. However, if one is looking to get their feet wet in the PCP world while being content with good enough accuracy at 30 yards while not spending an arm and a leg then the Gamo Arrow is a good first option, IMO.

So just to let everybody know, I ordered the wood version of the Gamo Arrow. There's been some talk about it being set up a little differently than the synthetic version and after shooting it I believe that. I ended up returning mine because it was not consistent I don't know what they tweaked inside but it absolutely didn't work so I want everyone to be aware of that.
