First time with the JSB King Heavy 34grain and FX Royale 500

So I got my Royale back from AOA the other day and I finally got a chance to shoot some of the new King Heavies through it. I put 20 shots over the chrony and shot a few groups with it this morning before work. I was really really curious to try these new pellets after reading Ted's report about them and the accuracy he was getting from them out to 100 yards.

The results of the chrony were: (I'm at work so this is from memory)

Average of 769
Extreme spread of 11
Standard deviation of 3

I'll try to get a full string report up later. I'm not sure how I feel about the heavies shooting at only 769 fps. I don't hunt so I'm not worried about the power, but I like the idea of having a flatter trajectory. I'd love to hear others opinions on this. The regular JSB Kings 25 grain have always shot right around 890 to 900 really well. Depending on what you guys have to say I might try turning the hammer spring up to increase the fps. However, I'm also hesitant to try that simply because I don't really want to mess with a gun that's shooting these pellets so accurately at this speed and if I switch back the 25grain Kings they may be shooting too hot.

Here is a pic of the two groups I shot. I actually shot the bottom group first but noticed it was too close to my POA so when I shot the second group above, I adjusted my scope a couple of clicks to get POI a bit lower.

Each group is a full 11 shot magazine at 43yards, slight occasional breeze, but it didn't seem to have much if any impact on the groups. The gun was benched on sand bags. Needless to say, I'm pretty pumped about the results (22 shots on a dime, no fliers?

Nothing with the regulator, the check valve in my bottle was sticking open so when I took the bottle off all the air would leak out. I took it apart and tried to fix it because it is such a seemingly simple mechanism, but try as I might I couldn't get it to work right. The repair was covered under warranty so they didn't charge me a dime. I also had them increase the velocity from about 855 to 890. They didn't charge me for that either and so far the gun is operating flawlessly. All in all I couldn't be happier. It sure is hard to get them on the phone but all my dealings with them so far have gone very smoothly. I'm a happy camper.

I had a Royale a couple of years ago that was lights out accurate also and even with thousands of rounds through the barrel it never gave me a bit of trouble.

What is the issue with your regulator?

"NMshooter"Nice shooting!

Thank you NM! These are the kind of groups I used to get with my old Royale and I'm really excited to see the potential that this new one is showing!
"TrapdorSpydr"Replaced the o-rings and can not get it adjusted properly.

there is a collar in the bottle neck that cocks and prevents the valve from seating properly. It happened twice when I was trying to adjust my gun. You have to take the bottle guts out and fix it from inside.

Thank you Trapdor, I think I know which collar you are talking about. I took the guts out of the bottle and I actually ended up replacing the collar with a new one that AOA had sent me. I don't think that was the issue because every time I took the valve out of the bottle, the pin in the valve was actually stuck wide open. It was as if the pressure from filling the bottle pushed the pin open so hard that it wouldn't close again and I had to tap the pin to get it to freed up and spring back into place. I couldn't find anything that was impeding the pin's movement and after I freed it up each time it would slide up and down freely on the spring and seemed fine. Every time I replaced it though it would just get stuck again. Frustrating because I consider myself fairly handy and mechanical and the valve seems like such a simple mechanism. I'm really hoping someone can still chime in and tell me what I was missing.

Cliff, my 500 is shooting similar sized groups with the MK1 Heavies, is that what you are using or the MK2's?, but my rifle is averaging 815fps with these pellets so might be worth tweaking your rifle. My reg. is apparently set at 140bar and I haven't touched the HST, not sure if I will.

Hi Strikey, That group was shot with the MKII Heavies. I was curious about the new heavies so when I ordered from PA I ordered 2 tins of the MKI's and 2 tins of the MKII's. My first impression is that they actually seem to shoot equally as well, but the MKII's fit and load into the magazine easier. I'm going to do some more experimenting before making a final decision about which is better in my gun but it's pretty breezy here in Maine recently so I haven't had much opportunity to test accuracy with any kind of consistency. i might try adjusting the hammer spring up some to increase the velocity as I'm also curious to learn about adjusting the gun. I have no idea what my reg is set to but I'd sure like to know a why to figure it out if possible.

Maybe the MKI's would shoot faster out of the gun for some reason? I'll send a string over the chrony today and report back later.
