FLORIDA AIR GUNNERS AND FOLKS

Yes, last news report it had slowed down from 10mph to 8mph travel speed. Wind speeds were still 145mph and 12-15' of storm surge. Same exact landfall as hurricane Charley, and almost the same path but it 2.5X as large (hurricane and tropical storm winds around the eye) and it's traveling a whole lot slower. We lost power at 5;30PM and I figured that was the end of it. Luckily it came back on 15 minutes later. Going to be a long rough night for anyone within 75 miles of the center. Thanks again for all the prayers for those in the path.

thats going really slow, sure hope it picks up speed and gets out of dodge for you all

Finally got cell service back. A few small tree limbs down and took down our privacy fence. Power went down at 6PM. Finally got the generator running at noon for a couple of hours to chill the 2fridges and keep the freezer frozen. It was rough until about 1AM then started slacking off. Hope everyone else did as well or better than us. Thanks for the prayers and well wishes.

My parents have their winter home in Punta Gorda about 1/2mile inland up one of the canals in the Punta Gorda Isles neighborhood. They are in NH now for the summer but had no real news from their part of FL until my uncle who lives down there got in on a bicycle and emailed up photos and did some live chat video on site with my dad. Miraculously practically no damage to the house and no storm surge at all but the canal sea walls are pretty wrecked but still standing enough to protect against tidal erosion. Another good size blow will destroy it. Dodged a huge bullet. Hope DonnyFL and his guys are all well, be nice for him to check in after all these years away from the forums and give us an update.

Saw some aftermath footage today,,,,,, not looking good.
This i am afraid is the new norm or at least much more frequent events, for sure i would not buy / build a house many places in Denmark.

Denmark which is a little and fairly flat country, we lost some folks too in the old days when big storms of the North sea came rolling in, hence why the west coast of Jutland now have "big" dikes in many places.

This is the flood marker in Ribe town, as you can see bu the bands on the pole the town have been submerged a few times in the old days.
The river in the back run into the ocean 4 miles or so from the pole.
There is a lock in the dike.

Worst storm surge was in November 1872, where the water was 3.5 M / 11 feet 5 inches above the normal high tide.
Fortunately back then and even today these parts of the country are sparsely populated compared to other places here.

The Dutch people are even worse off if they get hit and things fail.

Just so people know cell phones are restricted to " emergency use only" in some areas. I can text and have very slow internet access on my phone, but can't make calls. If trying to reach someone, try texting if the phone doesn't work. In some areas there is no cell service at all. Still can't reach some family 10 miles away. Others just got text capabilities this morning and I'm near Tampa.

We just got power and internet service this afternoon about an hour ago. I worked on the privacy fence all day. I had some 1"X7"X6' boards I had cut on my portable bandsaw mill a couple of weeks ago. I cut them in half, then cut them 3' long and made stakes. I drove them 18" into the ground on 2 sides of the broken 4X4's and screwed them together. It'll hold the fence up for another year if needed. Hopefully I'll get it replaced soon, but insurance won't cover anything less than 5 or 10% (first 5-10% is out of pocket) of property value in a hurricane. Lost a few sheets of Hardi-board on the 12X16 shed in the back yard also, but no roof damage that's visible anyway.
