For $1700, which would you buy: Impact or Maverick?

Yen, I know you like to tinker so I’ll put this out there. Stephen at Kraford Lypt has a bunch of parts in pre production and production for the Maverick that should be available in January. The first is a large one pieces, aluminum bottom half that has a forward mounting point for a bipod and rear attachment points at 15, 30 and 45 as well.

Here is a pick of K&L aluminum bottom half and a pic of Alex and I with our Maverick and Impact, side by side.

You know I love my Impact and it’s a tack driver but the Maverick is a very nice gun to shoot too, even for me and I’m a lefty. I just slide my cheek back a little bit. If you take the price out of the equation and just look at the guns themselves, the Maverick is awesome. It’s plenty powerful, our rear reg. is set at 140(I added the dual transfer port) the power wheel on 5/6 and am getting a ton of shots, shooting the 33.95 JSB’s at 935fps. It’s phenomenally quiet with just the Tanto on it, it’s very accurate with the Superior liner installed, it’s light, comfortable, and a simpler design than the Impact so theoretically, fewer problems and less maintenance. It doesn’t seem to be anywhere near as hold sensitive as the Impact either but I need to shoot it more to confirm. My son hasn’t really let me shoot it that much yet. He absolutely loves everything about it!

Flip a coin to decide...Don’t even catch it. While the coin is in the air, you’ll know if you’re routing for heads or tails and which one you really want. Buy it! Have a great holiday season buddy!

I just went through this. I have been waiting 6 months for my Impact. Right when my gun arrives in the states, so does the Maverick. I paused for a moment and had to make a decision before I settled up with what I owed the dealer. I’m older and wiser now. I no longer jump on the latest and greatest. Been burned too many times. Two things made the decision easy for me. The key feature that makes the impact great, the Maverick doesn’t have. The second is if the Maverick was better it would cost $2,200. I also look at it like this, if you have $1,700 to blow on an airgun, you also have $2,000. If the top tier Maverick was $1,495, now Fx would have a nice progression of guns. Dreamline Compacts $1,200, Maverick $1,500, Impact $2,000.

All very good points - assuming the one missing feature on the Maverick you're referring to is the ability to adjust the valve, correct?

As for the point of if you have $1700 to spend on an airgun, then you also have $2000 . . . apparently you haven't had the pleasure of haggling with buyers in the Classifieds, huh? ;) It drives me nuts when a would-be buyer says "I only have $xxxx. . ." What they're trying to say is "I only want to spend $xxxx on this item" because if you truly only had $xxxx, you shouldn't be spending it on an airgun (perhaps that money might be better spent on food or electricity).

NEITHER .... Buy a TAIPAN Veteran and nice scope for it .... DONE

Everyone should already own a Taipan. A smart airgunner should always have a gun in his safe that never leaks, creeps, or changes POI. A gun you can pull out to shoot while your other guns are in pieces waiting for parts or mods. Had my Taipan since 2017, it’s been a rock. It’s boring but some of us can appreciate and respect boring.

Despite buying a lot of rifles every year, I avoided the Taipans for like a decade because the $6 2x4 that they tried to pass off as a stock until very recently. When they started offering the laminate stocks last year, I gave in a bought 4 of them in various sizes and calibers. They were better than I thought they would be and I was very pleasantly surprised when I got them. But in the end, they still didn't make the cut and all were sold off within a few months. They're good guns but one of the greatest attributes many rave about (the trigger) wasn't enough to overcome the antiquated rear cocking lever and still blocky/boring stock.

That boring gun that I stash in my safe knowing it will always works when I need it is some variation of the Edgun Matador.

Lovely...thanks for playing.

as the an owner of both guns go for Impact, Maverick is really good but just not Impact. HOWEVER if you want a simpler hunting machine then the Maverick might have the upper hand.

Good to hear from someone that owns both. Kind of ironic that you call the Maverick a simpler hunting machine when I've seen a number of people (who have never even touched a Maverick at the time) complain that it will be overly complex due to the extra regulator.

Simply wait for the impact MK-3 it should have everything the maverick has + a bit more..👍

I'm ambivalent about this. I don't want a new variation of the Impact to come out yet because I've got two Impacts performing exactly like I want them and don't want to be tempted to replace them any time soon. But knowing FX, there will be a MkIII by next Spring/Summer I'm sure.

Are you stuck on the bullpup platform? If so, I would buy a used Impact over the Maverick. There are plenty of aftermarket parts to play with if you need to, but they shoot pretty well out of the box. Shot count, dual regulators and all that crap are academic IMO, as long as they shoot. I have two Impacts, but I just got a good deal on a Crown. I'm competing in 100 yard matches. The Impact 30 is very capable, but my Crown 22 shooting JSB KO slugs is very competitive. I kinda like conventional rifles a bit more than the hardware store collection of parts like the Impact types.

I highly prefer bullpups but bought some Crowns to play with in the last couple of years and they are way easier to shoot than any bullpup I own; but I still sold them all and still only keep the bullpups because I prefer the shorter overall length. I've never been the sharpest tool in the shed.

Well I would buy both used and put them in hydraulic press to let old owners out of their misery 🙄🙄

Another lovely reply. If you're not a fan of either rifle, just move on to the next thread; nothing more for you to see here in this one.

Kevin - it's so cool that your boys share this hobby with you. My son doesn't have any real interests outside of soccer and his xbox. Amazing that Alex has such a nice rifle at such a young age; no doubt I would set my son up with some fine gear if he were a shooter because the memories you share with them are worth way more than the $$$ spent.

How do you have so much insider info from K&L? I received a Gen3 Impact rail a couple of weeks ago and it's a great looking piece but the fit was slightly off.

The specs you mentioned for the Maverick. If I'm going to be honest with myself, I'll nab the first decent deal I find on a used one just to try it out for the sake of curiosity. If in the process of putting it through its paces, it actually earns a spot in the safe then I'll have to make the call on which rifle to move to make room for it. But at this point, I'm not going to dying to buy a new one merely because of curiosity when the Impacts have been a joy to shoot recently.

Not really “insider information”, Stephen and I are friends and we just talk about things sometimes, kick ideas around, etc... He shared that they were coming out with a Maverick bottom half and sent me a few pictures the other day because he knows Alex got a Maverick, but he also shared the pictures on Instagram last night or today.

I also have the Gen 3 rail for the Impact and Stephen was freakin’ cool and sent it to me in raw aluminum to match the raw aluminum AccuTac FC-G4 bipod I had just purchased. How cool was that? He’s a great guy, has always been very generous with the boys and I will support him as long as we’re shooting. He’s a pretty young guy and has done a great job building his business too.

Have a good one Yen. Stoti

My gen3 raw aluminum rail and another color option for the Maverick lower half.

This is one of the best selling points to the Impact I have ever heard, Vetmx you just brought my sights in on the Impact now,,,, BUT, I am still going to wait until the Impact 4 comes out with the improved O-rings and the hammer less system... Yep I am putting my money aside now, And its all your fault Vetmx, There are some BAD people on this form. LOL.

Mike

I own both and the Maverick hasn’t overly impressed me yet. It’s probably because I’ve spent so much time with the Impact. With the Maverick Sniper being $1,700 and possibly a new Impact MK3 might be coming soon. The most I would pay for a used Impact with PP is $1,500. If FX designs the new Impact around their current platform than we may be able for purchase upgraded part like the Power Plenum, Side shot magazine, STX superior barrel, etc. It would cost the same or more trying to upgrade a used Impact compared to buying new. Also since the Maverick was just released you’ll lose less money selling it used for another rifle.

Speak up if any more Mavericks amiss and whether user error or not.

Oh Oh, I found something else to gripe about!!! Woohooo!!!!

After each shot the darth vader inhale sound or the refill of the secondary plenum on my maverick seems rather long, I counted to about 9-10 seconds and can even see the reg meter slowly recover. I figured it might be the low pressure difference between the plenums, so I let my impact drop to about 130 bars with reg set at 100 and it recovered in 3 seconds, They all use amp regulators and the internals are all the same so I'm a little baffled on why the maverick has such slow recovery time. Could it be the down side of HUGE plenum?

All I can say is if you have a properly working Impact it will be unbelievably accurate at long distance and I strongly suggest not touching a damn thing once set perfectly for one specific ammo and if you want to shoot other ammo like different weight pellets or slugs buy additional Impacts in the same calibers and set them once for each specific ammo if long distance repeatable accuracy is important to you.

I bet there are many Impact owners who have a lot of duplicate Impacts in the same calibers because of this logic.

Everything he said.

But, I will be buying a Maverick, the first one I can get used at my magical price I have swimming in my head. I'll wait.

Do you think the recovery time on a reg can improve as it breaks in? The one reg I had on my Priest was slow to recover when new but improved as I shot it more. I pulled it apart and polished everything including the belleville washers and it got even quicker. There may be hope. I never had my AMP reg apart to see how nice the finish is from the factory.

If only Taipan made them in .30. I got a Maverick Compact on Friday to play around with. It's not as stout as the Veteran, but I'm digging it. It's noticeably lighter than the Vet though.

I was actually planning to get the Impact Compact the day the Maverick was announced. The Impacts have a better shot count, maginally lighter in weight and of course the valve adjustment. I really just wanted a small, lighter .30 cal hammer with a decent mag capacity, and the Maverick definitely checks those boxes for me.

I played around today and modified the baffles in a spare Veteran moderator and it just barely threads on to the 500mm barrel lol. That also allowed me to install a 480cc bottle that I have had collecting dust:

Yen, this is actually a great tread. Thanks for thinking about starting a comparison of the two, in that price range.

i look at the maverick as a good intro to someone wanting to take the next step, into a more complex platform; one who has just gotten involved with tinkering and self tuning and wants to take that next step, but without breaking the bank.

To outright buy an impact and not do a single thing to it to realize its potentials, to me, is just shorting yourself from realizing what you actually have in your hands. The impact is an engineering marvel of a gun, as we all know. To fully realize it’s potential, you must be willing to spend countless hours testing as folks like STOTI, Chuck, Edosan, and Heavy Impact have done. I can only imagine how many times they had their guns apart.

But, if that all seems too much for someone, and all you want to do is shoot the darn thing but have a few tinker adjustments to call it your “own tune”, then that’s where the Maverick falls under.

My opinion only, of course.

As far as which would I own if I had neither, and had the chance to own an MK2 Impact with a PP? Of course the impact, but, I do plan to get the Maverick in about 4 months or less, as it’s another platform I want to learn.
