Free Balistics Software

Used to use Chairgun but now I have a new computer and cant find the program. I know Hawk no longer supports it. What are you guys using that is a close to Chairgun as possible? I liked the charts and the graphs I could print.

Tried to download Point Blank software but a tag came up that said it would harm my computer so I put it in the trash. That actually looked like what I was looking for.

thanks for the help

For comparison graphs and comparison tables of up to 4 different setups at home ChairGun has no rival — certainly no ballistic calculator using the GA drag model for pellets.

For minute and spezialized calculations with airgun parameters at home again ChairGun is amazing (the computer version, the cellphone app is really limited).

But for managing a large amount of different pellets/slugs, different power settings, and different guns, and convenient use IN THE FIELDStrelok Pro is far more convenient (and for what is does the price is really nothing to bicker about). Very few ballistic calculators offer the GA drag model — Strelok does.

You can even enter your very own custom drag model (CDM)! For a little less effort but improved results, Strelok Pro allows you to enter up to 5 different BC values for varying projectile velocites. The last upgrade added a BC calculation feature, not just from projectile drop, but from two different velocities.

Yeah, you got me going now...! 🤣I should probably offer Strelok classes via video conferences! Anybody interested? 😊

OK, Miles/ ballsticboy over at GTA just made me aware of a free ballistic calculator —

that appears to be the reincarnation of ChairGun!

But not the low-cal no-sugar variety that the mobile version of ChairGun was. No, this ballistic calculator follows right in the footsteps of the full PC version of ChairGun — but all in the palm of your hand!

It even includes new drag models (a revised GA model for domes, and an airgun slug model, devised by Miles, a professional ballistician).

The app is really a whole suite of apps, with the MERO app the closest to a trajectory calculator like Strelok or ChairGun Mobile. The other apps all do one or two specific jobs, all in a mobile package.

A full suite, for Windows, Android, iOS, Linux

I'm super excited about this. 😊

Thanks for posting this! As a linux user, I really appreciate that there are native linux versions of these apps! I look forward to trying them out.

I just tried Strelok today.

I ignored what my mind told me the holdover was and trusted the Strelok information and had great success.

It’s almost eerie.

Dave,

that is precisely WHY I like ballistic calculators and long range shooting!!

You just scramble and dial a bunch of numbers — BC, MV, weight, wind, range, clicks/holdover — and then BAM! — HIT!! 😄

Eerily fascinating, this numbers game! 😄

I’m terrible at math and remembering stuff and have always avoided anything that required those skills. But when you think about it it’s just information, like a recipe. All the information is available and if you know what to do with it you have success! Definitely fascinating and within reach of simple folk like me😄! I’m not NASA material but this is way cool. Thanks for the help Shambozzie!

My vote is for Chairgun. It is no longer supported but like many Win 32 programs, it's going to be with us for a long time, because it's SO good. The things I like are

  • It's free.
  • It's clearly designed with airguns in mind.
  • The extensive pellet database in all calibers. It was easy to add some newer slugs to the list. The database is very easy to access.
  • The ability to graph 4 different gun configurations simultaneously. It let me play around with various scope, pellet, power combinations for my HW30, HW95, HW100 and a theoretical HW90, all at the same time.
  • You discover very quickly the importance of zeroing in at the correct range, scope height, choice of pellet weight, caliber, and ballistic coefficient.
  • You can easily see how the new slug ballistic coefficients improve both range and penetration.
  • The extensive graphing choices. Everything from POI, velocity, kinetic energy, momentum, penetration, and more.
  • The ability to save a configuration.

There is a native Android app which runs fine but has limited features. It's great if you're in the field, but not as useful for doing in-depth comparative evaluation of several configurations.

I installed the Win32 version in Linux two different ways. First I tried WINE. It runs, but the fonts are a bit small on my 4K monitor. I found it unusable. Then I installed it in a WinXP guest OS running in Virtualbox in Linux. That works beautifully.

Note that the Windows version requires Java to be installed first. WinXP needs service pack 2 or 3 to install Java 8. WinXP is an excellent guest OS to run older Windows programs in Virtualbox.
