From the Southern permission today

First post....

From our Southern permission today. 55 ground squirrels met their maker between the two of us. That brings the total on this property to 279 in the last couple of months.

On the white ground squirrel. There is a few of them on this property. I had never seen one before hunting this property. To date, we have taken 5. Seen a couple more today that were too far out to shoot at. Kind of different...

@NorCalFrank Nice haul and helluva first post. Welcome to AGN. Looking forward to more of your pesting excursions. What guns were y’all shooting? Pellets or slug? Weight(s)? Cast, swaged, or store bought?
Thanks. See my signature for my gear. My shooting buddy was shooting a FX T12 Whisper at like 26FPE. He whacks lots of squirrels with that gun! He was shooting JSB 25.39 pellets. We are both shooting .25 guns.

Had my personal best today. 150 yards on a ground squirrel in moderate wind. Held 3 mill off the squirrel. Took 2 or 3 shots to get him as the wind was real hard to read. My previous gun (Brocock Sniper XR) personal best was 124 yards. The Impact is shooting faster and harder than the Brocock, and seems to be working all around better on the permissions. I do still miss the Brocock. it was a great gun!

@NorCalFrank I don’t know much about that signature stuff. That’s a relatively new feature on this site. From a smartphone it doesn’t seem to show unless I go to your profile. I just figured that out. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Anyhow, y’all put in some serious work!! You ever record any of your outings? I’m a fan of .25 caliber. From what range were y’all shooting? How was the wind?

So here is the info from my signature line for reference:

FX Impact M3, .25 cal., 600mm, DonnyFL Tanto, Element Helix 6-24x50, currently shooting Nielsen 29.5 grain slugs

Today, we were shooting from 10 yards to 150 yards. Most inside 100 yards. Wind was whipping. I don't have a wind meter, but at 130-150 yards, I was having to hold 3 mils for the wind. It calmed for awhile, then switched to a different direction. I did miss two barn pidgeons at 130 yards today that I really wanted to get.

I really wanted to shoot a heavier slug than 29.5 grain, to help with the wind we have here. But with the 600mm barrel, the heavier slugs just don't shoot as good. I have a bunch of 34.9 grain Nielsen's that I will work with some more, and may be able to get them to shoot. I didn't spend a lot of time with them yet. In retrospect, for the shooting I do, I wish I would have gotten the 700mm barrel for the extra power and easier tunabillity. It's an Impact, so I know I can swap the barrle, but at $300 for the swap, I would need to wait awhile!

@NorCalFrank I’m not familiar with the Impact or any FX airguns really. I’ve had some good experiences with certain NSA slugs. When you find some that shoot well with your setup they’re great!! 3 mils hold? Sounds like some substantial gusts. Seems like you’re dialed in with those 29.5 grainers. Have you tried any JSB KOs (either version)? . I was also wondering, did your buddy shoot the JSB King 25.39 grain pellets out to 100 yards?

I have not shot any other slug besides the Nielsen's. And no, Ed was shooting out to 50 or 60 yards. His gun was shooting slow, and today found out the hammer adjuster was backed out. He got it adjusted now, so may run out to another permission tomorrow for a couple of hours and see how it works. Not many squirrels on this permission, but it's a nice place to sit and have a cup of coffee and catch a few squirrels on occasion.

@NorCalFrank Thanks for sharing. I was genuinely intrigued about someone shooting those 25.39 grain JSB King pellets at a distance. I was having trouble with them at 60 yards, so your friend’s experience is good to read about. I do admit I shot them from a gun that was tuned for shorter distances. I like King Heavies for shooting over 50 yards. They do ok shooting out to 100 yards out of my Brocock Bantam Sniper HR.

My Sniper XR liked the FX 34 grain pellets (I think made my JSB), but for hunting, I like the slugs because of their much better ballistic coefficient. The JSB sure do a fine job though at the closer distances.

Later, I plan of testing some of the heavy JSB's in my Impact.
