FT with FX Impact and which caliber?

Hey everyone,

I have looked around where I live (Charlotte NC) and there seems to be several FT groups, but no BR that I can find. I would really like to start shooting with other people as I am getting bored drilling the targets in my backyard by myself. I currently only have one gun that could be possible to use in FT, and even that I am not sure of. So I thought I would ask a few questions.

1) Has anyone successfully used the FX Impact for FT? If so, what type?

2) Can .22 be used for FT or do I have to go down to .177. The group I talked to (and what I have read) says under 20 FTE is acceptable, but being new, not sure if I can get to under 20 with the .22 impact.

Would love to hear from you guys that might already use an Impact, or if you know someone that does.

Gotta stay at or under 20FPE (or 12FPE for WFTF). . 1/4 of the folks I shoot FT with (although I rarely get out there) shoot .22. .177 is considered a preference for flat trajectory and smaller pellet size to fit through the target holes. An impact at 20fpe might be more tuning than many want to do if you have it set higher for 'normal' use. My. 25 impact will still do 31 FPE on LOW. So it would need the reg turned down, not sure how much.

It's just my gut, but If I were to adjust a rifle (any rifle) to shot FT and sight in the scope appropriately (one yard increments)... (which I've done for 2 of my rifles) I wouldn't want to change it for any other type of shooting, But thats how I've deicided to shoot my rifles at home. Changing power or scope setting can get old fast....Read up on the rules for the different classes. The handbook is on the AAFTA website and easily downloaded.

I don't shoot field target, but from what I advise . . . . . .

Get on YouTube, look up the channel, Field Target Tech. Tom Holland is a long time field target shooter. He's got a Marauder tuned down to 6 or 7 fpe for his shooting. It's in .177, because you can shoot faster and stay under the FPE rules. Some field target groups seem to stay under the European limit of 12FPE, which is definitely .177 territory.

Tom posts here regularly, but I'd go to someone like him if I were starting out in FT

As for the Impact, don't know why you couldn't use it, except that getting down to the appropriate FPE might be a challenge.

I know a few FT shooters from your area and a lot more in TN. Have you called/emailed the listed contact persons yet? Your best advise will come at a match, get to one.

FPE ( in no prize money shoots - taht's a joke eh? ) is up to the match director. My first match I used a 23fpe .22 , the match director said no problem. He also said things like, we can lend you a rifle. I've lent rifle to 15+ people who were airgunners but "didnt have anything to shoot". The 20fpe rule is for safety ( pellet splater at 10 yards ) and so the targets last a bit.

.177 is the common cal. NO problem using a .22 , got one of my highest scores shooting a .22 .

JCD does have a valid point.

Just get together with some of the people 1st. Likely someone would enjoy helping set up your rig. Someone would enjoy you using these.

Just do it.

Hi TitanFlyer,

I have used FX impact for FT shoot and I've seen other people use it. I've used 177, but I've seen another guy using 22. Good news is that yes you can use 22 to shoot FT. You just have to find good accurate pellets that can group well at 50 yards at under 20 FPE power. You should be able to lower power to 20FPE. Try JSP 13.43 and 15.89 pellets.

I assume you will be shooting at hunter division. My advice to you is to focus on setting up range card and learning your trajectory and making range marks on your scope wheel. Go to the shoot and have fun!

The Streamline should be an excellent FT platform. I hope yours shoots well! I've had bad luck with .177 FX barrels at lower speeds. Maybe the X barrel, if yours has it, will prove superior.

I've never been to a FT shoot where they chrony the guns but the bigger matches def do. Could I get away with higher FPE... absolutely, but as casual as FT is, many folks take the rules very seriously. For hunter... at/under 20FPE, scope at/under 16x. Your shooting companions will care once you become competitive. It's funny, I've had people challenge me based on the smack of a pellet on the target. After a little discussion, they were calling there 17fpe gun a 20fpe gun because in FT your either 12 or 20, a 13fpe gun would be the 20FPE category. My gun was running at 19.5 FPE with heavier pellets.... Yeah, it's gonna hit harder.

Oh, truth is I will never even try and compete.. just want to have fun with some others. Not to mention this is not in my hands yet so I will test it myself. I am confusing two guns though... this one the comment was stacked at 25 and not tested at 50. Either way, it will be fun. Came really really close to buying a Steyr, which is the one with the 50 yard 1/4 inch comment.. might still buy it just to hang it on a wall.. gorgeous.
