Fully tuned and sorted 457 deer rifle?

Wow, that's actually pretty impressive.
Yeah, these are what I was shooting, I was trying out the gun cause it's my first time shooting a big bore airgun and I was not expecting that much of a kick on top of figuring out how to tune it but, I'm using 365gr High Arc Hunter slugs. I shot the gun at sbout 2450psi for the 1st shot at 747fps and 2150-2200psi for the second shot at 712. I filled it up and tried shooting again but my chrono wouldnt pick it up for some reason.

So it's looking like Airforce Texan .457 carbine CF topped with Pard DS35 LRF 4x50 NV scope are heading towards the finish line.

Imo compared to bulldog, AF carbine is lighter weight, more powerful, simpler design with fewer parts, and is US made in Texas (AR neighbor to the south). Overwhelmingly positive reviews about accuracy, longevity, quality and service. Love the 39 inch length for hauling through woods and shooting from blinds.

But it's a single shot so I'll throw lots of practice slugs down the barrel to promote accurate one-shot kills. BTW as others said these big bores are loud so a second shot may be unlikely.

Super impressed with the Pard digital scope. Will have extra charged batteries at all times.

And finally while I'm blown away by the Pitbull airguns, I have to wonder...do bulldogs NEED that much tweeking to really be fully sorted?? It's an incredible platform, no disrespect intended.

Comments still welcome of course!

Nothing really needs to get done to the Benjamin bulldog. When they first came out, they were a bit underpower. And now I believe they come with an extra 100 foot-pounds of energy compared to when they came out originally. But you can still send them to get power tuned even further.

@jhagen1957 I can’t suggest either or. I’m an openly biased Bulldog man. You don’t need to send a Bulldog off to Pitbul Airguns, an M357 is good to go out of the box. Just learn the gun. I have a .457 Texan that I’ve never shot. I have taken deer with a Bulldog. I’ve missed a first shot, watched the group come back in, and nailed one with the second shot (no moderator was used). I had a complete pass through with a .357 slug. It went through ribs and kept on truckin’. Both of these things people have told me I couldn’t do or were unlikely. Do what you think suits you within your situation, knowledge base, and abilities. Above all, get very familiar with what the airgun /ammo combo you’re planning to hunt with can do before taking it out to hunt. My $0.02.

Sorry if this is a random question, and I know this is subjective, but how loud are these large bore air guns compared to say a 22? They've got to push a lot more air, but I'm curious if it's comparable or if there's a huge difference.

Also, are good ethical clean kills consistent? Obviously placing a good shot is important, but I'm curious about penetration, if bone is a problem, etc. I hunt deer every year, but I've never thought about going down the road of using an air rifle.

Hey Jay I just have an older 357 bulldog stock except for a moderator. some people say they are loud but in my opinion it is quieter than a 22 and it does not have that supersonic crack. It just has a wierd ping, I don’t mind it and the deer don’t either. I Dropped three last week on a single air charge with the cheap strike 82gn pellets $13ish for a tin of 100 full pass through on the largest deer. I just picked out the largest doe in the group at 60ish yards shot her double lung no ribs she jumped walked 10 feet to the edge of the field and laid down. When i shot her the other 9 actually ran towards me. I shot another while she was looking at the first one laying down coughing at 50 yards double Lung one rib pellet lodged under the skin on far side. she ran about 40 yards and laid down in the field. It is strange the deer I have taken with it don’t really react much to being shot as long as you don’t give your position away and scare them. they will usually just stay there and expire. I actually shot the first deer of the three the day before those two at 60ish yards double lung one rib lodged under the skin on far side. I can’t give tell speeds or energy levels just results three pellets three deer one charge.
