FWB FWB 124D & Standard

I tune and repair springers and PCP's for family and friends, I am a retired Tool & Die Maker and automation engineer and have lathe, Bridgeport mill and other shop equipment and precision measuring gauges.A friend of a friend wanted me to look at his FWB124D that would no longer shoot a pellet out of barrel. I worked on pretty much all the HW Weirauch/Beman German made springers and Air Arms springers but never a FWB, I agreed to take a look at his gun. However before tearing down his gun I came across a used like new 124D with same issue so I purchased . I watched a video on disassembly and it was pretty simple process, turned out that all of these FWB124 springier suffer the same issue. Disintegrated piston seal pounded into end of compression tube. I use a modified brass jag to pick out the pieces embedded into compression tube, cleaned everything up and installed a new ARH Pro Mac Kit with new seal and spring assembly.I used Tar, moly and some super lube on safety slide. Reassembled using my trusty robust spring compressor. I cocked and uncocked rifle several times before shooting, each cocking cycle distributed lube and rifle smoothed out. Also installed new breach seal and lubed barrel pivot with moly. I shot gun about 100 times using JSB Exact 8.44 gr pellets, pulled out FX chronograph and gun was shooting around 850 FPS so power has been restored and then some. The more I shoot this gun the silkier it gets. Then I installed Sportmatch Mounts and a Hawke scope and shot some groups and was blown away by this guns accuracy. Now I understand what all the fuss is about with these guns.
I ordered another kit and proceeded to do customers gun with same results.
One year later I came across another 124 in standard not the Deluxe with same issue, ordered another kit and installed, I now own two of these guns, both like new, however for some reason the standard version had a little smaller diameter compression tube so I had to resize the piston seal and this gun is about 40 FPS slower in velocity but still shoots incredibly accurate. Both of my 124's look like new and weren't shot very much by previous owners. I think i'll post some photos next.

I got my first 124d about 50 years ago, and was immediately impressed with the accuracy and power. Early this year I got another off an ebay site, recently resealed and new springs. My original has been reworked twice once by Beeman and again about 3 years ago by David Slade, in reality he probably did it both times. My first one came from the old W. VA Air RIfle Headquarters. I remember studying their little catalog for several weeks before finally deciding on the FWB. I think what convinced me to go with it was the stated accuracy, ease of cocking and power in that order. Not long after I put a Williams reciever sight on it and accuracy jumped quite a bit for me.

Beautiful stock I bought from Tyler. I've been holding off on finishing for certain reasons.

I'd say your first rebuilt one at 850 fps with the 8.44gr shoots a little hotter than average. Could be some burning lube
adding velocity. Regarding the standard version, if it's shooting 40 fps lower that means you're in the 810 fps with the
same pellet. That is a more normal velocity for this pellet weight. The tighter compression tube could definitely account
for the lower velocity but resizing the piston seal correctly should offset that smaller diameter. Are the serial numbers
for both rifles similar?

KWK; That looks like an old Maccari walnut DIY stock. I traded a friend for one of those DIY a few years ago to put on my FWB 127.
I added a rosewood grip cap & ebony spacer, and completed the finish with Maccari RLO Stock oil. Then added some custom checkering.
Nice light weight upgrade.
Have fun.

So the Serial number for the Standard 124 is- 52037 and the 124D is-53368
I enjoy shooting them both, the standard version was shooting JSB Exact 7.87gr yesterday right @ 820 fps, these pellets shoot the best at all ranges
when I get out to 50 yards they still group really great and are flatter shooting than the heavies.
The 124D will zing the 7.87's at 890 and thats a little too hot so I use Baracuda 8's @ 8.44 gr for same results
I need to get some photos up of these guns.
I removed open sights from both and installed a moderator made by Martin Rutherford at Airguns-USA and it matches the guns and looks beautiful.

That's a nice stock. Look closely at the video of mine. Notice it has "cheeks"(for lack of a better term) carved into both sides just ahead of the pistol grip. See between the 00:03 and 00:05 marks. Also, I believe the pistol grip extends just a bit more. I'm thinking about a black grip cap for it.
I looked through all of the pictures in his galleries on JM's site and haven't seen one like it. But don't doubt for a minute he made it. Jim made some nice stocks. I have 2 others.

Those are pretty good running 124’s. Mine runs just over 12 ftlb. It has an unknown spring in it. Seal was trash when I got the gun. The spring was loose around the guide and vibrated pretty much so I grease globbed it. That quelled it but not a good tuning solution. I consider a JM kit because he uses a shorter spring and I don’t know the dimensions of the special top hat he uses. Or the correct spacing. So making my own guides would be guess work. Got to be easier to control that shorter spring from recoiling back and forth.

Thanks KWK. I think I see what you mean with the "cheeks".
However, the red butt pad, with black spacer appears identical, with what came with his DIY version.
That's why I went with the rosewood & Ebony spacer, trying to match it up a little.
Yours has some nice grain. Please share it with us when you have it completed.
Have fun!

The 7.87 gr Air Arms perform well in the 124. Try them ! Those serial numbers both are manufactured in the same time frame so
I don't understand why the difference in compression tube diameters. If you blow through the barrel after shooting and you get a
heavy amount of smoke those burning lubes can increase velocity. Or after shooting try and look through the barrel. If you can't see
light then your burning excessive lube. Even if the shot doesn't produce the dieseling " crack" you still get a increase in velocity
with burning lube.
