Where the stock is drilled from the top where it is inlet and down into the pistol grip, then a wooden dowel is inserted for reinforcement. The 300's I own have all been plugged. So I am wondering if that older stock has been also. There may be a more technical name for it.
The plug Thing I have absolutely no idea about . I've refinished a few dozen of these stocks ( mainly 300s) and have only seen one with a crack at the see wrist . Not saying they aren't out there . I just haven't ever thought of it as a potential problem . but like I say most of my jobs have been 300s stocks
I finally decided to fully bring back my 1977 FWB 300S back to it's original glory. I did a lot of work on the rifle, both inside and out because when I got the rifle it looked like it has been through hell and back. I decided to use tung oil to finish the stock, but somehow it just didn't feel right, although it did look quite nice. So i used Tru-Oil to bring back it's original shine. I'm extremely happy with the end result.
Thanks Joe. And after re-blueing the action for the third time, it's now really deep black. This has been an ongoing project for months, with loads of finetuning here and there. But the end result is indeed a brand spanking new rifle that now sits in my man cave as a trophy / museum piece!
Still on the lookout for a 300S Universal that I can work on next, but these are hard to get by over here.
OUTSTANDING !!! What an incredible job you did Leon. Not only did the stock come out great , the bluing you did is also nice. You have a great piece of history and being you brought it back to life must be very rewarding. Learned a lot from Joe that I'll be putting to use when my Mini/Junior arrives.
Jonnes your 300S turned out really nice. From pics you've posted in another thread, it shoots as well as it looks. I notice you have an aftermarket insert in the forward threads of the front globe. Can you tell me what it is?
Joe, they sell here for around $450 to $500, but mostly via auction sites and I keep on bidding just a bit to low. But I will get one eventually.
Frank, thanks! Just follow the blueing method we spoke about, and the end result will be the same. But be sure to degrease the action, that's really important. And don't overheat.
Wadcutter, it's an insert from a Anschütz 54 I have. Same thread as the FWB300S.
That is sharp. I like the contrast of the black stippling and blonde wood. I was thinking of bleaching my sons junior model 300S if he will let me. It is a plain beech stock. Maybe I can convince him with the pics you posted.
