Hi All,

let me start by saying I’m a total newbie with no airgun experience. I just purchased the FX X Impact MKII Compact PCP airgun from Airgun Depot and am curious how others are refilling these airguns. According to the product specs, it says “30 shots per fill,” the magazine capacity is 23 rounds, and the canister is 300 cc, and 250 bar fill.

Q1: This immediately seems to tell me that I could not even get off 2 magazines worth of ammo before refilling; is that true? Should I look into upgrading the canister capacity with an FX Carbon Fiber 580cc Cylinder?

Q2: Say I am hunting with no nearby power source, what is the best method for refilling? Would I fill a small portable filling tank and carry that with me?

Q3: After looking up PCP airgun compressors (+4,000 PSI), I keep seeing Air Venturi compressor but it’s relatively expensive ($1,300) and I was told by AirgunDepot that the Nomad II could not fill a large refill tank (sounds like it is only meant to fill the guns canister). Are there no other reliable compressors? I see a $360 Orion Tech (4,500 PSI), $309 Yong Heng (4,500 PSI), $380 GX (4,500 PSI), etc.

Thank you so much for your help,

Ari

Q1

I had an Impact Compact. You should get a lot more than 30 shots from a full 300cc bottle, unless it's a .30 caliber. Big caliber airguns use more air, than smaller caliber airguns. What caliber is yours? https://utahairguns.com/fx-impact-mkii-compact

Here is a fill calculator:

https://www.airgunsofarizona.com/Tanks/FillCalc.html

Q2

either a filling tank or something like the Nomad compressor. I have 3 tanks and if they were all full, could shoot a lot. Depends how many shots you anticipate to need to shoot while away from home

Q3

Look/Post in the air tanks and compressors forum. Lot's of info there.

Your shot count will vary quite a bit depending on the caliber and the tune of your gun. I broke down and got a 580cc tank when they first came out and have never been disappointed.

You need to be careful when changing tanks as barrel length can cause your tank to interfere with your moderator.

I purchased one of the smallish Ninja 90ci CF tanks when I started out and they are great to put in a pack and carry around if your spare tank is not enough.

About the best compressor around for under $1000 is the Yong Heng you will probly want a bit more filter with it as well. The Set Pressure or Hardcover units are what you want. You DO NOT want the Simple or Auto-Stop versions of this compressor as the simple version has no water separation and the auto-stop ends the charge ant near 3000psi.

A would recommend a better filter although, if your humidity level is not too high, you can probly get by without it if you take care of the stock unit and purge while filling often enough.

Thank you! A couple quick follow up questions:

1. Do you actually swap the bottle/canister attached to the gun while in the field or were you referring to the replacement/upgrade to the 580cc bottle and that I should be careful when doing so? The barrel length is 500mm (~20”) but the overall length is just 25” - not sure if that has anything to do with this.

2. Do you think the 90cc tank would fill my bottle (or a 580cc) a few times? I’m having trouble figuring out how to calculate this. Not sure what the minimum pressure is (I.e. when to refill) but the max appears to be 250 MPa. Also not sure the pressure drop per shot. Seems like it might be a trial and error task given the number of factors.

I own two Ninja 90 cu-in tanks with EZ-Valve, I gave one to my father. They are perfect for in the field. I had a 480cc Commander and I could refill it about 3 to 4 times from 150 bar depending on ambient temperature as it affects pressue.

For a compressor, you want quality here. Buy once, cry once. A good compressor will likely cost as much as your new gun. I recommend you oversize your compressor and undersize the load; it keeps the duty cycle short. Heat is the enemy of compressors. The more expensive compressors have adequate moisture removal systems without the need to create a Rube Goldberg machine for filtering water. Note that I enjoy the Rube Goldberg setups people have done and shared here so this isn't meant to insult.

For something 90 cu-in the Daystate LC-110 would be a higher end unit, however, if you go with a Yong Heng which also seem to be good value for their money you'll want to add a good cyclone/coalescing filter not just a dessicant system.

As always, there will be many opinions. My father has an Omega Air Charger on the way that's cheaper than the LC-110 but I can't comment on it because I don't have any first or second hand experience.

You've purchased a very nice PCP so make sure whatever you get results in nice dry air making it in there. Welcome to the hobby! I would not consider the Nomad II, Hatsan Spark, Benjamin Traveller, etc or their "clones". I would consider the Yong Heng with a proper filter setup which may cost you an additional $200-$400 or the Daystate LC-110 which is $2000 or so or the Omega Air Charger (based on forum feedback) with the 90 cu-in Ninja bottle with EZ-Valve (made in USA, DOT certified).

Hope this helps!

1- I put a 580cc tank on my impact with a 600mm barrel. The tank will hit on the moderator with a 500mm or shorter barrel. The charged tanks are replaceable in the field

2- I get a couple of fills on the 580cc bottle from near 150 bar to full with my 90ci tank filled to 4300psi. Then some partial fills as well.

The two Yong Heng units that I recommended have the cyclone water filter already on them so do a pretty good job of removing moisture if you do your part.

Sorry, I completely forgot the caliber size. It’s a .30 cal. I don’t currently have a refill tank and the fill-calculator seems to need values for the tank to make calculations.

what compressor do you use to fill your tanks?

Thank you so much for your help.

I have a Bauer Junior II with auto shutoff I bought brand new,and yes it was expensive. I have all 3 sizes of Joe Brancato tanks.

I don’t have the moderator; it didn’t come with mine. What is the work-around with the 580cc canister? Do you just have to choose between one or the other (remove moderator when using the 580cc canister)?

Okay. Below is what I’m leaning towards, but I’d like to get your experienced opinion on this.

Compressor ($310): Yong Heng pressure Set 110V 30MPa 4500PSI 2.5HP Set-Pressure Air Compressor. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074QHNHVX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_tAdRFbDN379ZZ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

4-Year Protection Plan ($45): ASURION Protection Plan. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07P5HYSTX/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_api_i_LahRFb0PVBKNF?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Filter/Separator ($139): ToAuto 30Mpa Oil Water Separator PCP Air Compressor 4500Psi Air Filter. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V4F6H1X/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_api_i_DXgRFbDZD3JJE?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

External Refill Tank ($185): NInja Lite carbon fiber air tank - 90/4500 W/ adjustable regulator. https://www.ansgear.com/Ninja_Lite_Carbon_Fiber_Air_Tank_90_4500_w_Adju_p/ninjatanklw-90-gry-adj.htm

Air Canister ($99): FX 500cc Aluminum Cylinder w/ Valve. https://www.airgundepot.com/fx-500cc-aluminum-cylinder-with-valve.html

Has anyone tried a dual canister on the FX Impact Compact? I didn’t even know this was a thing.

Please let me know if any of these seem irrational. I’m a complete newbie and won’t take offense.

Thank you all for your help.

You are good on the compressor

Filter is good also but you can probly can get it for less elsewhere.

💩The refill tank will only fill to a max of 850psi so not usable to you.

Yes, I guess you could just remove the moderator when using the 580cc but then you are shooting the pellet very close to the tank, for many inches, not sure if it would affect accuracy or not.

The 500 cc aluminum tank will probly werq but will not give you as many shots as a 480cc carbon tank.

The Compact version of the Impact is not made to shoot at high power levels or for a great number of shots. It is made to shoot a decent number of shots at moderate power levels and shorter distances.

Dual canisters are usually for benchrest guns shooting longer distances with a long barrel and often lots of power.

If you're going to go the Yong Heng route, I also recommend something similar to this to sit before your dessicant filter:

https://www.amazon.com/Pressure-Water-Oil-Separator-Filtration-Compressor/dp/B077SX5G9V/ref=pd_sbs_469_5/141-5646752-9637507?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B077SX5G9V&pd_rd_r=15c6973f-b290-4197-a47b-d6990cb83943&pd_rd_w=7BRXi&pd_rd_wg=AfG8q&pf_rd_p=ee4a13a5-1d19-4a45-a832-a74924eb9541&pf_rd_r=JC2K7SFTY79XNC2RF8F5&psc=1&refRID=JC2K7SFTY79XNC2RF8F5

This might be cheaper, with the YH, and a bottle you want good moisture removal.

https://www.amazon.com/Pressure-External-Water-Oil-Filtration-Compressor/dp/B0784WBFPT/ref=pd_sbs_469_7?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B0784WBFPT&pd_rd_r=4762d299-6b2e-442c-9b8d-98a78bf51b10&pd_rd_w=RjvVs&pd_rd_wg=8lsgj&pf_rd_p=ee4a13a5-1d19-4a45-a832-a74924eb9541&pf_rd_r=WVT08N3V9DB0RNDJDPBA&psc=1&refRID=WVT08N3V9DB0RNDJDPBA

I also recommend something with a check valve so that for top offs it can also act as a PMV (Pressure Maintaining Valve) allowing your filters to work properly. The Ninja 90 cu-in bottle with EZ-Valve has a check valve built into the neck, you can directly fill the bottle without having to fill through the valve or fill hose itself. It's super easy.

Not sure I'd want to do a dual bottle on anything, it's just going to make it more front heavy. Filling from a bottle is EZ-PZ and takes a matter of seconds, like 10 seconds or less if that. I have a 105cc cylinder on my Concept Lite and re-filling it is super easy. It's not a hassle at all. I would save the money you're investing in another bottle and dual bottle adapter and invest it into the 90 cu Ninja tank w/EZ Valve. It's really that good. I think Biohazard would agree with me as well since he owns one. Having used the IOman bottles and other stuff the Ninja, for it's size, is best in breed.

I think I will just get the 90cu Ninja EZ given the number of recommendations on here. I’m a bit confused with all of these filters/separators. Are both of the products you linked above required? Is there a single product I can use? How would the following filters compare?

Thank you!

My LC-110 uses a coalescing/condenate tower, basically it spins the water out against the cooler side walls and the water condenses out. This is the "first stage" of the https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0784WBFPT/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_api_i_RTvRFb9C1QXXJ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1. The tower without beads is a coalescing/condensate tower. You want one of these.

Now, on my LC-110, I do not use the beads with charcoal filter. I only use my condensate tower *but* I have cooling lines and other things along the way that are a bit different than the Yong Heng setup.

If it were me I would go with this - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0784WBFPT/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_api_i_RTvRFb9C1QXXJ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

EDIT: You don't need the carbon filter, see if you can find a two-tower setup that comes with the molecular sieve which acts as a dessicant dryer.

You've got a coalescing/condensate tower as the first stage; the HPA air enters it, spins around, and out comes water. Then as a final stage you have the molecular sieve/etc. This should ensure moisture free air from the YH goes into your 90 cu-in tank. Your 90 cu-in tank fills the gun. Dry air all along.

If you're doing the Ninja 90 cu-in with EZ Valve you get the benefits of a built in PMV and no need to do the tank-pressure-mating dance. Your fill process is easy, fill the Ninja taking breaks to avoid overheating. This is your first time fill. Heck you might even want to take it to a fill shop to have them fill to 3000 PSI for you. Then use the YH to top it off. The check valve will not open on the Ninja until the compressor hose pressure is *greater* than the tank pressure. At 3000 PSI bottle pressure bingo-bammo you got a built in PMV that makes the water filtration setup work properly. When the hose pressure exceeds the bottle pressure the check valve opens and you begin filling at the bottle pressure, which I assume would be around 3000 PSI.

Hope this helps! Welcome to the hobby!

Thank you for your help. Would the following 3 items be sufficient or do I need another filter for the molecular sieve? I’m okay paying more to have a single filter product that does all of the filtering.
