how good are these? i have a chrony brand and works well, but i like the ease of use as far as size goes with the FX brand.

The fx chronograph is great and your right it is nice to throw in your pocket and head to the gun range

Works great and I love mine, highly recommend. I'm sure some of the larger ones may be slightly more precise to an extent. For general usage and ease, the FX chrono is amazing.

Maybe a silly question for those that have these. 90% of my chrony time is in garage shooting into a pellet trap a couple of feet from muzzle making notes for field testing. Does the FX unit have a minimum projectile flight “distance” to get a reading?

I seem to remember reading that it reads the speed in a fairly small window about a foot away, so I think it would work for your garage testing.
I like mine, but it can be a little finicky setting up for a good read. I know some of my testing time is usually spent trying to get it properly aligned with the pellet path to read every pellet. Then some days, it reads perfect.

Keep in mind the radar doesn't like echo... don't shoot with it close or along walls parallel.
