Tuning FX Crown MK2 w/ 380mm with H&N 21g slugs

FX Crown MK2 w/ 380mm Superior STX in synthetic stock shooting .218 H&N 21g slugs @ 895 fps:

I shot targets at 150 yards to cull through a variety of unsorted(straight from the tin) H&N slugs. 21, 23, 25, and 27 grains in both .217 and .218.

25g in both sizes were the worst(gun/barrel didn't like them at all). 23g in both sizes were so-so. 21g .217 and 27g .218 were a little better. 27g .217 was runner up(I noticed earlier it did really well up to 100yards, but then started to open up at 125yards), but 21grain in .218 was definitely the winner. Fairly flat-shooting. Not as much holdover/clicking as you would need with the other slugs.

I think this would be a good choice for hunting/pesting/plinking in light winds with the shorty barrel. I shot this target in 3 to 6mph wind at different distances starting at 150 yards. The first group I shot at 100 yards didn't seem representative(IDK why, unseen gust of wind maybe?), so I shot another at 100 yards. I then moved the target to 75, 50, and 25 yards.

I haven’t used my 380mm barrels (in .22 and .25) beyond 59 yards. I’m going to have to rethink that (once the snow finally melts here in CT).

Thanks guys. I stumbled onto this while trying to find a slug to use with the 380mm barrel for hunting/pesting in windy conditions. It has become one of my favorite setups. 

I started with .2175 and .218 NSA 17.5g, which grouped well, but groups opened up in the wind. .2175 and .218 NSA 20.3g slugs were almost as good as the H&N 21g. .217 and .218 H&N 23g. 

Other slugs that grouped surprisingly well and were more resistant to wind were the .217 JSB KOs and the H&N 27g, but the trajectory was loopier.

I've heard good reports of H&N 25g, but my barrels didn't seem to like them.

Yep you can definitely tell you found a good slug for your rifle and you must be a pretty good shot too with no fliers. I got a Continuum in .25 cal and I don't hesitate taking shots at 100 yards with the 380mm barrel and the Hades. Bill

Thanks. The pretension screew is 2 quarter turns away fron max, PW set to 4, and the reg is at ~ 165bar
