Tuning FX Crown Regulator reseal and Replacement

Hi all,

Since the lockdowns with COVID and all, my crown was left unshot for a while, months actually. When things got easier I took it out and it was acting a but funny. Leaking air sometimes, unsteady shots.

So I took it apart to reseal it. Orings were deformed around the reg. It looks ok over all.

My question is, I was planning on getting a huma air reg and I read here that "Generation 2 Crowns (after Serial Number 180760) had the long (16mm) piston and the large (10mm) housing (These are called AMP regulators).."

Mine is before 180760 yet when I measured it, my piston was 16mm long and washers were 10mm dia.

The adjuster screw doesn't look domed. Looks a bit pointy to me.

Now thats puzzling. Which gen regulator should I get? How come mine is fitted with an updated regulator? I bought it new 2 years ago.

Thanks a lot, always great support from FX USA. I ll drop an email, just to understand the generation thing.

If it's under warranty I would just save money by requesting FX to just swap regulators with you.

Where I am, warranty is one year and it is not possible to ship it out to fx for repair unfortunately. I am fine with resealing it and it wouldn't be costly but I am considering the upgrade given that there is an issue now.

Where on "Earth" are you?

Hehe, I'd rather not say.

Just someplace where I would rather brake the rifle trying to repair it myself than send it to their "technicians" lol.

Imagine having to sneak peeks through glass counters for an half an hour to find what you need cause store clerks never know what you are talking about.

If it were ok to import parts and accessories I'd pay premium to buy stuff from outside but I'll make do with what I can.

I once bought I repair kit for a gen 1 crown, which is basically a new reg. Even the boddy, and belleville washers had different size, I could use the piston, and the adjuster screw with a domed tip, for the old reg. So all depending on what needs to be replaced, if the piston and adjuster screw has the same dimensions as the old one, you can use them. Just measure them first.

I bought a huma reg, so would rather replace all of it. Just waiting on a response from fx regarding the generation thing.

If anybody is interested or finds this topic through google:

My rifle is an fx crown gen1 (serial number prior to 180760) but with a 16mm piston AND 8mm springs, I measured it earlier I said it was 10mm lol. How embarrassing. The set screw is not domed I think. Looks pointy.

The generation and piston size combination was confirmed by fx.

The huma regulator I bought (gen1, standard high pressure) came with missing belleville washers, the standard high pressure for both gen1 and gen2 comes with two bags of springs, one is 0.4mm thick washers and one with 0.3mm. they are marked as A and B. I could not measure the difference but I followed the manual for installation.

I gave up on the huma for a bit due to the missing springs.

I managed to get replacement springs and a 16mm piston.

I resealed the regulator, it was a bit stupid at first but once I wore in the orings, it worked like a dream. Didn't even have to zero it. It averaged ~830fps with a very tight spread. Don't remember pressure sitting but it was 120 or 130. It didn't accept even the slightest pressure increase tho, speed would drop to 700 with a big spread.

The second time I took it out, speed is steady at 820 and again it wouldn't accept pressure increase. But it still shoots great.

I installed the huma regulator today to see if I could get a bit more out of it and I hope I can take it out tomorrow and see how it does

Tbc....
