FX DL Classic Journey

I sold my FX Wildcat and bought a FX Dreamline Classic in July 2019. The Wildcat was unbalanced in my hands with a scope mounted so I thought a standard style rifle would be better for me. The DL Classic didn’t fit me either but I decided I would keep it. Rifles that fit me the best seem to be light carbine length rifles. My 2 most comfortable to shoot rifles are my HW30 break barrel and my Daystate Huntsman Regal. The reason I kept the DL Classic was the advertised flexibility and initial accuracy. Unfortunately FX hasn’t come through with the kits to transform the DL Classic into other configurations. Because of the lack of FX kits I decided to convert my DL Classic to a nice bench rest rifle (home use – not competition). The following is my DL Classic journey.

Stock (as delivered) FX Dreamline Classic Synthetic Stock 600mm pellet barrel, .25 caliber with FX/DonnyFL moderator. Scope is a SWFA SS 3-15x42 FFP MOA-Quad with Sportsmatch ATP-66 30mm adjustable scope mounts. As stock, hammer spring adjuster inset 0.219” from flush.

Initial pellet performance in out of the box configuration tested with a LabRadar on 7/28/2019:

JSB 25.39 gr

Average fps – 909.06 fps

Extreme Spread – 3.17

Standard Deviation – 1.04

Kinetic Energy at 0 yds – 45 ft lbs

Kinetic Energy at 20 yds – 39 ft lbs

JSB 33.95 gr Mk2

Average fps – 797.97 fps

Extreme Spread – 23.03

Standard Deviation – 6.53

Kinetic Energy at 0 yds – 48 ft lbs

Kinetic Energy at 20 yds – 43 ft lbs

Parts added or replaced this Winter/Spring:

Aeron CZ chassis

Huma gauge for regulator pressure in place of FX gauge

FX Power Plenum

Huma High Flow Dual Hole Transfer Port

Huma regulator with 30cc Internal Power PlenumXL

910 Tuning Brass Hammer Spring Adjuster Jam Plate

FX Barrel Band

* Weight is 10.28 pounds as configured (with Aeron CZ chassis). Optional butt stock weights (3 total) add an additional 8.5 oz when installed.

**tested rifle with addition of FX Power Plenum only (no regulator or hammer spring setting change) and averaged an increase of 23 fps with 25.39 gr pellet.

***No comparison data on the addition of Huma regulator, Huma internal plenum or transfer port because I changed regulator pressure (tuned to 33.95 gr Mk2 pellet vs 25.39 gr pellet when I added those parts).

Current setup is for 33.95 gr Mk2 pellet (used FX radar for this 10 shot test):

4/15/2020

4:50 PM

48* Outside – 72* Inside (shot from inside to outside via open patio door)

29.92 inHg

Altitude (GPS) 7,126 ft

JSB Exact King Heavy .25 – 33.95 gr

Extreme Spread – 11 fps (1.2%)

Standard Deviation – 3.4

Average - 890 fps

Regulator set at 135 BAR. Getting 32 good shots from 230 Bar fill.

Sighted in scope and shot groups to check accuracy in current configuration. I am happy with performance from bench at 30 yards. Shot two 0.65” groups which are very good considering my best groups are about 2MOA on my best day!

Nice groups Frank and thanks for sharing the journey. This is a path i am on as well with tuning the 33.95's.

I had similar fps results with DL classic out of the box. My reg. seems to be set to a 120bar eyeball.

25.39 = 900 fps, w/PP = 933 fps, a 3.66% increase.

33.95 = 777 fps, w/PP = 804 fps, a 3.5% increase.

I just recently added a carbon fiber shroud and the FX barrel band. Seems to be a very sturdy setup now. Last night I was elongating my transfer port to 6.5mm. Will report back.

Are you planning to mod the probe at all? What was you reg. set to from the factory? I see the Huma is @135bar. Excited to see your 50-75 yd results.

My eye balling of the out of the box regulator setting was 120 Bar also. So it looks like my stock settings match yours. I have a Huma Regulator test fixture that allows me to better set my Huma regulator outside of the rifle. Therefore I'm confident that I am set at 135 Bar now. Not sure what the FX reg gauge accuracy was but the replacement gauge is about 5 Bar low. That is the reason I like a reg fixture to setup the reg. I am 72 years old and have a problem holding a dremel tool steady so I won't be opening up the probe unless I have a couple as backups! I have tried various barrel band/supports and the new FX barrel band is much better in my opinion.

I got to shoot 1 target at 50 yards today. Not as good as yesterday at 30 yards but the DL Classic is still better than the guy behind the trigger. I have added a picture of today's target. The scope was still set for 30 yards on the first shot (low shot at 6 o'clock). The next 15 shoots are with the scope elevation set for 50 yards. Also added a picture of the rifle. Thunder and lightning were starting to get close so I only shot one target. I will try to shoot more later this week.

Yes the center black circle is 1". Looks like I need about 1 or 2 more clicks of elevation to truly center on the target but I was in a hurry because of the weather. You can see the target stand just below the front of the air tube in the distance. I will need to clear some lower limbs (and maybe the small tree to the left and behind the target stand). The distance to the fence is about 95 yards. My goal is to get a clear lane back to the fence. It is an open field on the other side of the fence so I am safe in that direction.
