FX Hybrid Slugs....My Experience

Guys...it's just my opinion, but isn't $85.00 for a single 500 count tin of these FX slugs an outrageous price for what you are getting? There's no gold tips, no depleted uranium core, no exotic metals in the mix...just plain old shaped lead. at .17 cents a shot???

I'll stick to NSA hollow point/cavity-base slugs at $18.99 per 325 ct tin, I can buy four and one-half NSA tins for the same money as the FX slugs, AND...get more slugs for my money...1462 slugs to be exact. Ummm...500 subtracted from 1462 is WHOLE LOT more shots for your money.

I know I'm old, cheap, and on a fixed income, but barring something I don't know, there isn't a pellet gun slug made worth .17 a shot.

Thoughts???? Am I just being petty here? Did I read the price wrong????

There are many brainiacs here that think you shouldn't even look at prices if you've purchased a gun that costs $2000 or more. Yep, once you've dropped 2K just start chucking the rest of your money out the window because a $2000 gun means you have an endless supply.

Good points made by all. It's SO easy to get caught up into this sport and just keep "trading/selling up", till you get what you really wanted. I started off with an Air Force Talon and over a ten year period kept buying, selling, trading until I got a way better gun than my budget dictates.

I continually hear "You can't take it with you, so why not???" Well, I've got a plan for that! I'm going to liquidate everything I own, have it made into a USPS Money Order and inserted into a naturally occurring orifice just before I'm cremated. The way I see it, there's a bank just about everywhere! I remember those gradeschool nuns telling me that I could say prayers and bank some saving grace for me in Heaven...

After I depart, I plan on asking the first person I see where this "Grace Bank" is, and I'm going to cash that M.O. and have some real fun!!!!

A little update and some thoughts on the recent discussion on this thread. 

I had the opportunity to do a little longer range hunting this past weekend (very nice Birthday treat) and took the Veteran out with the Hybrids. Unfortunately I was not able to hit live targets with them. Frankly I think they shot much more flatter than I anticipated and the slugs just flew over their heads. 

I will pre-empt by saying that I have very little real knowledge of ballistics and long range airgun shooting, so take my OPINION as just that, with a good amount of common sense and observation. 

I personally think that the advantage to these are: Able to shoot Slug type ammo out of conventional barrels with very good results. Potential devastating effect on pest/game. Longer range stability of a Slug. Potential flatter trajectory. I THINK that everything does come into play when considering their purpose/advantage Weight, BC, Design, expandability, etc. The fact (for me) is that regular slugs don't really shoot well out of my .22 guns, but these do, and I am not in a place where I can use or care to buy a designated Slug gun. Pellets work just fine. 

As for the cost: If these are very effective in both accuracy and stopping/lethality power, more so than pellets, and they allow me to play the Slug game, without having to buy a "Slug Gun" (that's a lot of savings right there), then they are actually pretty cheap in my book. I don't know that in my case the cost is actually justified, but worth the price to test and decide for myself. 

More testing to come. Got 3 more boxes just in. Would love to test lighter ones if readily available. Also, when the .25s come out, I anticipate they will do very well out of my Power Tuned Cricket, although I generally shy away from shooting that gun in my backyard, too dang powerful for a Suburban 'hood for my liking.

Thought I add my preliminary test, just received from PA today! 10 shot groups @ 65yds- 32deg. Wind west to east about 7-13mph”note:”did not hold for wind no flags just let’m rip!” RED WOLF = 940fps, IMPACT 845fps ( impact set for 890fps w/18.1jsb’s) I honestly don’t think they shoot to bad? Considering conditions and no tune for the Impact!

Nobody forces anybody to buy anything. Doesn't mean these (and many other things we 'need') aren't overpriced. I must admit the I find the price vs the talk of them being pumped out of high speed machines by that bullet company a bit hard to reconcile for the moment.
Matt's video with them was good, like all of his stuff, but the wind bucking/terminal performance was no better than the slugs he uses any of his other videos. And I think that may be what villaman means regarding the hype that surrounds these?
So whether you regard the cost as 'worth it' really depends on whether the idea that they can be more easily shot at lower power appeals sufficiently. 

I'll give them a shot out of curiosity when they become available to 'normal' people in SA. But until they're priced reasonably enough to use all the time (I'm of the mind you should practice with the same round you hunt with), it'll likely be a once off novelty.

I know no one is forcing into buying into the hype , which I will not . Who pays Matt in around about way !!

like I said I will keep with H&N slugs for now , as they work fantastic and far cheaper than any other slug . Can’t wait for JSB slugs to come out though

I don't get what some folks are whining about here. 

Are the FX slugs a quality product? Yes, I have found them to be excellent, consistent, and extremely accurate. 

Are they priced fairly? That is debatable, and depends on perspective. Here's some thoughts: They aren't plinking ammo... get sighted in, reserve em for hunting. The market is coming alive with slugs. With JSB, H&N, NSA mass producing, the price will be driven down. 

I personally am so pleased with them out of my R5M, I bought a brick of em. 

Really looking forward to .25 and .30 cal. 

That being said, If you feel they are priced too high, don't buy them! Simple.

I guess so much depends on your purpose for the lead. I have paid over $12 a box for RF ammo that did the job. I will use slugs pesting and a small amount of target same for the RF. With competition I can see the price dropping. I will purchase what works for me. Wish I could find a ton of the old PowerPoint ammo of 20 years ago. But today is today and the new slugs work and I guess I'll pay the price..

Well I had mine cranked up as much as it would go. I don’t know how to get into the reg and adjust that, so hammer time only. Was going mid 700s and hit a tiny 1/4ish group at 25 or 30 yads?

Ok the reason I asked was because I received a shipment of the slugs today. At Noon during my lunch hour I tried them out....just a quick shooting session, 2 mags (10 shots) each at 22 yards; all the room I have in the back yard. I’m planning on taking out to 50 to see how they group....either this weekend or perhaps at night across vacant property behind my house. Anyway these are pictures from today. I did not have the time to setup the Pro Chrono but will this week. Current tune is 850 FPS at muzzle with JSB 18.1, these 22 grain FX hybrids are slower I’m sure.

LOL...I put the extra nickel in cause at $14.99 per 100 slugs, it cost .15 per shot!
