I had an interesting experience yesterday. Our local gunsmith held a .22LR shoot and I asked him if I could shoot my .22 Impact since my accurate .22LR rifle wasn't available but he said no. I decided to use a .22LR AR I built with a 3.5MOA dot sight on it (my 3-gun training AR). Thursday night I tested a few ammos I had on hand and over the next couple nights I practiced my standing shooting, got the sling adjusted for support and made a quick holdover chart.
Yesterday was the shoot and there were 18 shooters of all types shooting mostly sporter type rifles (only a handful of serious rifles). The rules were standing position only, 1/5 scale NRA silhouette targets: 5 chickens at 25 yards, 5 boars at 50 yards, 5 turkeys at 75 yards and 5 rams at 100 yards, one shot at each target. The targets were painted white and were placed in a wheat stubble field with sun to the front/left. The straw was illuminated so the targets didn't stand out very well and I felt sorry for the guys with open sights. There was a variable wind from just barely noticeable to 4-5mph straight from the right.
I didn't have very good confidence because it seems my holdovers changed from Thursday night to Friday night to Saturday morning before the shoot. I really dislike going to a competition with low confidence but my best friend was going so I went anyway. I ended up with 6 hits out of 20 targets good enough for 4th place. The winner had 12 hits.
After the official scoring round was over he let everyone shoot multiple more rounds for an informal score and he allowed two of us to shoot our PCP's. Even with the wind picking up I managed to get 11 hits:3 at 25y, 4 at 50y, 2 at 75y and 2 at 100y. Shooting standing position at small targets is quite a challenge. There were lots of questions about air rifles and many of the guys has GAMO or Benjamin springers and were impressed with the Impact. Hopefully he'll let us shoot our air rifles next time around.
