Hello all, brand new to the forum! I have been watching a ton of videos on PCPs for many years now and I think it may be time to dive in.

I currently shoot 1000yd BR, have shot .22 NRL matches, and am a big predator hunter. But this Airgun stuff is new to me.

If you were to get one gun, that you could shoot squirrels, woodchucks, fox, other vermin, and still take to the bench for a few matches….is the Impact a good choice?

I like how you can change barrels, and all the upgrades and mods you can do. I recently bought a compressor from a local guy that strongly recommended FX, so now I just need my first gun!

Thanks for any guidance!

Looking back over the years I’ve seen plenty of guys who watch a bunch of fluff videos, have a powder burner brag list and expectations. They are generally disappointed when PCP reality strikes. If you do go with a M3, can you get it to do what you saw in a video? It depends on a lot of factors. Will you be shooting pellets? Then your path will be easier. Slugs? Far more difficult to achieve what your brain feels is a walk in the park with a powder burner. An accurate group or groups is a step. Accuracy every day is the hurdle. The M3 is a good gun but it is in the deep end of the pool. I’ll put it to you this way, if you buy a M3 and your buddy buys a let’s say Uragan, Taipan or Cricket. You guys are both clueless about PCP’s. He will be outshooting you directly out of the box. You are going to be spinning knobs, flicking adjusters, buying barrel stiffness upgrades and asking other guys for their tuning numbers. Meanwhile your buddy is just shooting. If you buy a M3, shoot slugs and finally understand them, you won’t be switching calibers. If you’re pellet guy, the caliber switching is easier but even then your old settings when you return to them are not always the same. Do your homework and that homework does not involve videos/commercials.

Good thoughts, maybe I will just stick with say, a .22 cal to shoot slugs consistently? I am alright with adjusting minor things in order to get it to shoot. In 1000 yd benchrest everything you do makes a difference. I am still young in my research stage, but speaking with guys like you on this forum is a good start!

Take everything you know about firearms, put it in a box then tuck it away with your reloading stuff. Airguns and slugs, start with a clean slate. With a RTI, Edgun, Cricket, Vulcan, ect, the gun will either shoot a slug or it won’t. You can’t make it do it. With an Impact, we believe we can make the gun shoot a particular slug that shows hope. That’s when the chase begins and in most cases, never ends. You’ll see guys bragging about their gun and how great it shoots but then if you pay attention, you either see it for sale or later they are chasing another slug or asking barrel questions. So in reality, how good was their gun actually shooting? The devil is in the details.

Just because you buy an Impact doesn't mean you have to tinker constantly. I tuned my 25 cal. M3 to shoot JSB 25.39 grain pellets at 920 FPS, and haven't touched it since. But if I want to shoot different pellets or slugs, I have the capability to tune it for the best accuracy.
Hi, are you shooting the JSB 25.39s at 50yards or out to 100yard?

If videos have cast some kind of FX spell on you, have you considered a Maverick? I’ll guarantee most Maverick owners will match or outshoot most Impact owners. The adjustments are more straightforward so it’s harder to get the guns tune all jacked up.
No FX spell here, but I have definitely put the Maverick into my consideration! With what has happened in the recent past and reloading components, even .22 lr ammo nearly impossible to find. I figured I could do some localish BR shooting as well for fun.

By all means, if you have other recommendations, I am not dead set on the impact, or even FX for that matter.

I mainly do pesting at a dairy. Very seldom do I shoot beyond 75-80 yards, and the pellets have been very accurate at that range. At my present settings I get over 150 shots with the 580 cc bottle and 700 mm barrel. I'm hoping to get out again on Tuesday.

I think the FX Impact M3 in 30 cal with 700mm barrel would probably make you happy. Before diving into the tuning too deep when you get it, select what you'd like to shoot out of it then call the guys at FX to give you a good starting point on tune. You could also order from a shop like The Pellet Shop and they can tune it for you before they send it out too. Unlike what some people have to say about the Impact M3 I really don't fiddle with mine at all. I have it tuned for JSB 45gr Hades pellets and it just runs. I sometimes use FX Hybrid slugs and poi is almost the same. I just have to utilize a holdover that is 1 hash mark up.

one thing to remember,
its not like you can just swap to a different caliber barrel and go shoot.

i know fx makes it sound like you can,
but the reality is,
you will have to change regulator settings, retune, and re zero the gun to what ever barrel you plan on using.

i love my impact m3 .25
but its not "imo" the best choice for someone that is new to pcp airguns.

just my 2 cents :)

You’ll also see sale after sale on slugs in the classifieds that didn’t work out.

Nothing negative about that at all. A true blue hard core slug only guy “pays the price” by putting in the time and $$ in finding which slug will perform the best and give the best accuracy for a certain tune.

But if you’re not into buy, test, then sell of slugs, then maybe a pellet tune is all you need.

This exactly. I'm a long time shooter that went down this path. The Impact has its charms, and the 2+ year journey (I've owned 3) had its moments for sure, but 1st shot hunting reliability and bench rest accuracy are beyond the Impact's reach and/or my patience and willingness to spend the next upgrade $. Now much happier with PCP for pellets, 22 lr for long range.

Check out the 22plinkster / Dauber et all vid on Youtube if you haven't already.
Not entirely fair perhaps but worth watching.

The FX is the Swiss Army Knife of airguns...
And yes you can swap calibers very easily.....
Once you tune it for the caliber/pellet setup, Just jot down your setting!!
Reg pressure, Hammer Pre-load, and valve return spring tension..
So when you swap out to another caliber, dial in the settings......
Then shoot your M3 to Dial in your scope!!
