FX FX King 177

I had a 500mm .177 fx liner and it was terrible above 13 FPE.
Thats also the feeling i got with my 600 mm Maverick that was supposed to be FAC but it shot ( on power wheel #7 / MAX ) 13.43 MRD pellets like lasers at 575 FPS but any faster and no pellet worked nice. ( 90 BAR on the regulator from the factory )
Getting a 700 mm barrel fixed the Maverick right up.

Hi,

I just bought a new FX King 177 with the 500mm barrel.
I'm wondering if anyone has got this arrangement to shoot very well?
I was hoping to use it as a loaner for Field Target and Bench Rest shooting.
No decent results so far. Do they all shoot this bad?

Thanks,
Mark
I couldn't get consistent results at 35 yards with Panthera shooting 13.4s at 20 ft/lbs.

Regarding optimal velocity for the 13.4g JSB/FX/AA pellet…

Looking at the 40 Yard Challenge leaderboard, you will note excellent scores with the 13.4s - always with velocity between 790 to 840fps. Optimal seems about 825fps.

These results are across a variety of rifles/barrels: FX, RTI, Thomas, RAW.

I‘ve had excellent results with my FX Dreamline Classic with 500mm SL barrel shooting the 13.4s. Regulator pressure is 95bar.

The 10.3g can be shot over 900fps and retain high accuracy. The 13.4g seem to lose accuracy above 840fps.

Hope this data helps,

-Ed

Almost no experience with .177 but I remember Rick (shooter1721) having very good results out of a 177 king. I think he shot slugs and way above FT energy. That leads me to wonder if this platform maybe just doesn’t perform well at such low energy being a gun capable of massive power 🤷‍♂️. Seems it would be a hard tune to obtain at such low energy. Just a thought.

Thanks for the replies.
I build and service a lot of high end guns. And yes a poly barrel shooting 13.43 around 800 FPS should shoot well all day long.
I tune many Thomas's and Raws to this spec and they all shoot very well. I picked this King on a whim. I shoot a lot of bench rest
and Field Target. I was hoping to make a nice gun to loan out for new shooters. But as it is I cant let anyone shoot it.
I've never been a fan of the liner of the month club. And it doesn't look to have improved over time. I'll likely cut a solid barrel to try next.
Or buy a 30 cal barrel to try for extreme filed target. But then the gun will see very little use. Or just sell it and move on.

Mark,
I bought a King in .22 with a 500mm barrel early this year. I could never get it to shoot .22 pellets worth a darn. It shot the FX Hybrids really well (at about 1050 fps, also the Zan heavier .22 slugs). To get it to shoot the 18.1 JSB pellets I put in a lighter hammer weight and turned the Hammer Spring and Reg pressure way down. Finally got it to shoot around 885fps - exactly where my 500mm .22 Crown did really well (see EPG's 40 yd leaderboard above). But the King couldn't even come close to the Crown. I did have much better luck on the King with a 600mm .25 barrel and heavy pellets.
My final conclusion was that I was trying to make a square peg fit into ... You get it. The Dynamic/Panthera block is all about power. I pulled the valve and seat out of the King and compared them to my Crown's valve and seat. Way bigger! And with no way to throttle the transfer port I think it is just blowing too much air through the barrel. The results were similar to when I shot the Crown with the Transfer Port on High and used the slug port on the barrel. I couldn't get my Crown to group decently. Switching the port and going to Medium on the TP setting calmed the results way down.
So unless you plan to shoot slugs or .30 pellets the King should probably find a new home.
Cheers,
Greg

P.S. - As noted in a Sub12Airgunners video there is a smaller size valve and seat in the UK Sub12 Dynamic/Panthera's.

Hi just a little update.
I called tech support at Utah air for some advice.
They were very helpful. Long story short. The king and like guns were designed for high power shooting large calibers. We all knew that. Not much info on the low power sub 12 ftlb guns sold in Europe. The transfer port on those guns is quite small. Not available here but they do stock the 177 transfer port so I bought one. You can turn it over and ad a small port on the opposite side. Which I plan to do. Then ad that transfer port to a walther 12 groove barrel I have laying around. The other point he made is the regulator doesn’t function well under 100 bar. Not enough pressure to reset the correctly. They suggest 120 bar to start and hit the hammer lighter to get the speed you want.
I did that and it’s greatly improved. Not a match gun but good enough to keep me working with it.
More to come.

Well I think I figured it out. It’s the fx barrel as suspected. I just finished adapting a Walther poly barrel to the king. Now shoots typical match scores. Dropped 2 points out of 60 at 25 yards. That’s pellets right out of the tin. I pushed a few pellets thru the STX liner and it had several tight spots. In my opinion the king is a great gun in need of a good quality barrel. It can deliver a lot of power so I may try a 30 cal barrel retrofit next.
Heres some pics.

Interesting, I don't doubt the LW barrel is better, but since there are some tight spots in the FX liner, do you think polishing could improve the accuracy?
I have an FX king .177 on order with the 600mm slug liner so kinda interested in what can be done if i end up having accuracy issues like these.

My guess would be no. I've only had luck polishing known good barrels that have degraded over time. Lapping might fix it but it's very hard to do.
Can't hurt to try. JB bore paste only. I've had bad luck over polishing with Flitz. The bore gest so smooth the pellet slows down a lot and it leads very quickly.
Not what I expected to see.

I have polished a few FX liners/barrel it takes a little time, but it is not hard doing it will give you better groups and help with led fouling, but I agree it should not have to been done that's where FX screwed up, they should have designed their guns with LW barrels, and I think they would have a better platform.

While I kind of agree. Fx liners are rolled on the outside to make the rifling. Cut rifling can be rough from the transition lands to grooves. That’s all your soothing out by polishing. The inside of a fx liner should already be smooth as no machining has been done on the bore of the liner.
I have no idea why I can feel tight spots of if that’s why my gun shot poorly. But a conventional walther poly cut barrel shoots about as good as it does in my RAWS and Thomas’s. Now my king leaked from new UA is sending a new main valve. I made this tool to get the old seat out.
