N/A FX M4 Compact vs Krait Standard vs BRK Ghost Carbine

Hello and Happy New Year,

I've narrowed my options down to three popular airguns, and I’d love to hear your thoughts—especially if you've had the chance to try all three.

I’m not a professional airgunner, so I’m looking for an honest, down-to-earth opinion from someone who knows their stuff. My main goal is to find something compact and quiet for some backyard plinking, but with the flexibility to crank up the power if I spot a coyote sneaking around.

From what I’ve gathered, the M4 is all about tinkering and customization, the Krait is the simple, no-fuss option, and the Ghost is super unique but comes with some pricey, replaceable parts.

I’ve owned plenty of PCP airguns in the past, but I’ve never had to dive into any maintenance or tuning myself. So, they must be reliable.
if you were to recommend one of these three and give it a solid tune-up, I’d likely stick with your settings and leave it at that—no need for experiments on my end.

Also, just to make it clear, I’m not too concerned about the price tag of any of these models.

Given all that, which one would you say is the best fit for me?

The reg adjustment requires the tank to be removed, and the gun degassed. The hammer/power wheel works as it should. The M4 can make big power with lower pressure and hammer settings, and is easier to adjust in the field. As for reliability, that depends on how, and how often you use the gun. I've sold both, and tuned both. I would go with the M4.
Which one requires the removal of the tank in your first sentence?

@nomojo65 - Even though my Krait is clearly "mini" Airmaks calls it the "Standard" I also have an L for long in .25 which has a 520mm barrel and the final is the "X" which has the 700mm barrel. My "standard" is in .177 and I have it shooting KO MkIII 10.03g slugs at 940 and it is extremely accurate. My Ghost in the picture is an HP in .30 but I put it there to show the size comparison even though the thread is discussing "compacts." The Krait is a helluva truck gun!

Can Ghost handles any slugs at all?
Others that own should chime in on that question. I know the impact is much more conducive overall towards slugs. No experience shooting a ghost nor do I use slugs. The daystate going to make slug barrels is years old. I wouldn’t hold your breath waiting.

I have shot several Ghosts and know several people who own them. As they come from the factory none have shot slugs well. Also, my observations of other’s experience is that they have had several problems with them. One gun fired with the safety on or off just by being bumped slightly. It has been sent back to the factory.
Given the OP’s desires the M4 or M3 would not be considered.
I have shot the Krait and the Krait lite. Seems a well built gun and very accurate and not really any need to tune unless you want to dial back the factory tune. Both I shot were shooting pretty hot from the factory. If I was going to buy another air gun right now the Krait Lite would be at or near the top of my list.

Because they are “pellet“ guns… Slugs! So what? That stock, the Ghost may or may not shoot slugs acceptably. Again, they are “pellet“ guns. Slugs? Over hyped and over sold, the majority come to pellet guns to? Shoot pellets and enjoy all the opportunities they provide. “Several problems? With them?” My Ghost doesn’t fire with ”safely on”…. Unless there was some user fiddling involved. That said, what “are” the other “several“ issues with the Ghost you are purporting? They seem ephemeral…🙏

Thank you for sharing such valuable information. Following the guidance of the professional air gunner from this forum, I've decided to go ahead and purchase the Ghost. I had a thorough discussion today with the dealer's owner, who has had experiences similar to those shared here regarding both the M4 and the Ghost.
Tony at Talon Tunes still has the Ghost on sale.

i was in the same boat couple months back was going to buy a ghost
then decided to take a step back do some research on the gun along with others in the same category.
best advice i could say still being green to the hobby.
if possible, go to the local gun shop look at the guns you're interested in person reviews are nice, give you an idea from some owners, but nothing tells the story until it's in your hands.
i have come to learn that there are favored brands on all sites like the ford vs chevy.
the ghost and the impact are both good guns the biased will say different and then you have the complainers who don't remedy the problem they would just rather complain and sound like a broken record.
Krait i have no idea so for me to comment would only be speculation.
i shot the ghost handled a couple shot the impact same thing did some research on the history of both.
parts availability aftermarket support customer service well that's another subject.
both guns have their own quirks and problems it's what suits you best what feels best to cradle to me the impact was a little more comfortable to shoot.
knowingly the impact had issues i still bought it, only difference is I fixed mine took a few weeks but got it done i will leave it at that.
i still may buy a ghost down the road it's not off the table
Congrats on your ghost

Thank you for the great advice. We do not have any local shop nearby and that was my limitation.

@shoot4fun2, looking forward to your impressions of the Ghost,. Which is based off of the electronic version of Daystate Delta Wolf, a proven top of the line platform. Hence no need for experimental iterations, i.e. M1-M4, then soon M5 Impacts and on and on…
I am anxiously waiting to get my hands on the Ghost. I just remembered that I forgot to order the bipod.
