Tuning FX Maverick Compact .22cal pellet tuning setup FYI

I bough this FX Maverick 22cal compact back in July and have been doing some testing on the regulator pressures to see what I could come up with. I have tried to find one tune that I could use several different types of pellets by just turning the power wheel. So this is what I have came up with so far.

* I have added Maverick power slug kit with the .25cal hammer weight, not the .30cal version that it comes with. Also this barrel is FX Superior liner used on the slug side, not the pellet side. (With the standard hammer weight that comes with the .22cal compact I could not achieve the speed below with the 25 grain pellets.)

*Also the IHS is not maxed out on this reg setting. I don't remember where it's at right now, but I had to turn it down to get the Hades down to 892fps.

Here are the stats on the tune:

1st Reg 150

2nd Reg 115

PW1- JSB Hades- 892 fps (Sighted in)

PW2- FX 18.13 -915fps (Used in target)

PW3- H&N 21 -890fps (Baracudas) (Used in Target)

PW4-H&N 21- 938fps (Also FX 25.39's@877 fps)

PW5-H&N 21- 938fps (Also FX 25.39's@889fps) (FX's used in target)

PW6-H&N 21- 939fps (Also FX 25.39's@ 895fps)

PW7-H&N21- 951fps (Also FX 25.39's@896fps)

I was trying to see how many pellets could keep POI. All did but the FX 25.39's, which shifted to the left. I have a FX Carbon Fiber sleeve coming, so we shall see if it changes anything. (Some of those high shots were me getting used to this short setup.) I need to see the trigger can be adjusted down from stock as well.

Great shooting! It looks like the gun is running out of steam around PW4, so you either need to turn the hammer spring adjustment down or up the reg pressure a bit to get full use of that power wheel ;)

I love this gun, but after a while you get tired of messing with it. At this point if you turn the IHS down you will loose power on the 25's and if you turn it up you it will be too fast for the Hades. I bought this gun for pellets, so this should be the right tun. This one doesn't like anything closer than 30bar difference between the regs. Maybe the Sniper version is different.

I completely understand how it is sometimes. It does get old, especially when you're trying to thread a tuning needle. If you lower the hammer spring adjustment screw just a little, that'll give you full use of the power wheel and give you some more flexibility on the low end of the power wheel. You'll just be moving the PW4 setting to PW7 is all. If you up the reg a hair, you'll just have more power on the top end. You may be using the PW setting at a different number for the lower power tunes, but you'll still have them. The bonus being you can add in a tune for the 34 grain beasts at the top end. I'm just trying to help ya get use of all the PW settings, whereas you only have 1-4 realistically at the moment. It certainly looks like the accuracy is there though!

Sounds good. What setup do you use on your Maverick Compact 22cal?

My gun didn't last long in compact configuration, lol. It got a longer barrel before it ever got put on a target. I only shoot slugs in mine, so I never even tried to nail down a solid compact tune. The lowest power tune I even use is around 40 fpe in .22. In other words, my tunes would be useless to you I'm afraid :( If the gun is doing what you want, I wouldn't knock you for leaving it as it is. I was only trying to help you keep the tune you have, and get a little more flexibility with full use of the power wheel.

The reason I ask is that I have seen a lot for the Sniper version listed here but almost none for the compact 22cal version. I have yet to really venture into the slug world. Honestly I am seriously contemplating buying another FX this fall. By chance did you change the trigger settings? That is next on my list this weekend to work on the trigger. I had Tony at Talon Tunes set my Taipan Veteran Long at 4 ounces and its very impressive. I don't think this Maverick will do that but would like to see where it's limits are.

Jason, I will assume you have watched Steve Scialli's AEAC VLOG on the tuning of the Maverick .25 with both the Sniper and Compact setup? If not, please do.

Patrick

Yeah I did. He was the reason I bought one. It is very simple gun to set it up for 1 pellet or slug tune.. I was just trying to see how many I get get at the same POI at 45 yards on the same power wheel. I've had it to 53.5 foot pounds with JSB 33.95's just trying to see what it would do.

I think the reasons we've seen more snipers in the classifieds is two fold. Firstly, the early guns had some bits that should have been loctited from the factory that weren't, along with a few other little things. That stuff likely showed up more with the Snipers, because people were pushing them harder than one would normally push a compact. The other reason is I'd guess people trying to shoots slugs out of the Sniper and not finding it to be plug and play as they'd hoped. Combine those two with a lot of "misinformation" on slug sizes and tuning, and you end up with people giving up and selling guns. That's just an educated guess on my part.

I did mess with my trigger just a little. It is now only a little lighter than the gun came. I did adjust it to a little under 1lb at one point, but that was too sketchy for me, since I do a lot of hunting. Now I have my trigger in the 1.5-2lb range I'd say. If I mostly shot targets, I wouldn't have a problem with it being a little under a pound, but that's just too light for hunting uses for me.

Call FX and order the medium weight hammer and then bump your second reg up another 20 bars, you can thank me later.

I already have the medium hammer weight in it. I thought it was the .25cal hammer weight. The one on the right is the stock version and the one on the left is the one that came with the slug power kit. The 4mm came from FX.

A question on the Slug Power Kit:

FX website says Maverick Sniper: 5,5 (.22): 'up to 96 Joule – 71ft/lbs with 33,9gr pellet@968fps' and ' Maximum muzzle energy obtained using the FX Maverick Slug Power Kit, sold seperately'

Yet in product description of Slug Power Kit is says 'not suitable for pellets'.

What am I missing, maybe due to large size of 34grainers there is enough meat at back of pellet to seat it fully?

Regards.

IT shoots pellets just as good as slugs. Not a single problem with shooting pellets.
