FX Panthera 500

Ok guys EPG's comment really had me thinking. This thing is suppose to be super efficient with high power and slugs, so the shot count really got me thinking. So I got the Chrony out today and found out the the Panther from the factory was actually tuned at 917-920 fps, For those of you with impacts, the quick tune slider was at 3.25 and the the macro adjust dial was at 23 (the max). The regulator is factory set at 78 bar ish.

Received Panthera with setting
JSB 18.13gr .22
speed 917-920 fps
quick tune slide at 3.25
macro adjust dial at 23(max)
regulator at 78 bar on full tank.
number of shots 39 from 250bar to 90 bar

New adjustment and verified on Chrony
JSB 18.13 gr .22
speed 870-875 fps
quick tune slide to 2.5
macro adjust dial to 13 (center)
regulator at 78 bar on full tank
number of shots 90 (five magazines)
from 250 bar to 78 bar

The shot count doubled?

Any thoughts on those that have experience with tuning an fx?
Thanks

PS. Got a DonnyFL Shogun on it, increased the length quite a bit, but now its near whisper quite, just hear the sound the pellet hitting the trap.

Holy moly!!! 90 shots with 300cc barrel. I was also wondering before if it was a heavy in the HS and a little inefficient, but didn’t expect that! Even with taking the speed down too.

Do you have any 25RDs to test as well? I may be starting to not care about the size of that bottle after all.

That’s awesome on the shot count. I had been thinking about one of these for a bench rest gun. Not sure what caliber or what length barrel to get. Would like to compete at RMAC, etc., but don’t know if I should go with 500mm or 600mm? I think 700 is longer than I want. I suppose I should wait until they offer the pellet liner in the 600mm.

The ARCA to picatinny adaptors are very pricey, over $100 for a decent/complete one
Check out Wiser Precision. $64 plus shipping.

Did a little more shooting today afternoon after all the rain in SoCal.

pressure tank 250 bar
regulator at 75 bar
FX Panthera 500 with Donnyfl Shogun
Last measured 870 fps with JSB 18.13 gr pellets

Total Shots 85 down to 79 bar on tank. Shot count consistant

Photo of groupings below. getting dark, 10-15 mph wind, temp 60 degrees, Shot 5 magazines fairly quickly.

BET 16 GR PELLETS YOULL GET 120 AT 910 FPS WITH SAME ACCURACY

You can already get the same liner as the 500 for the 600. Granted, you have to buy it separately, but you can do that.

Thank you for continuing to share. Love it!!

So I decided to take the plunge with my first FX. The precision rifle look of the Panthera is what won me over vs the Impact. I'm going to get an Impact as well, but had to start somewhere and wanted to get into bench rest shooting. Thanks Tebonr for reminding me of the liner. Twohsieh's success with the shot count really pushed me over in the decision. I have the 600mm in .25 coming from Tom @ High Pressure Pneumatics. He also installed the pellet liner for me as well. My thought process for the 600mm was it is 44" long, and that was really the max I wanted to go, and I wanted the slug liner as well. It also has the larger plenum, so I thought it would help with the shot count. I also thought the longer barrel of the 600mm would help to keep the speed of the pellet up where it needs to be over the 500mm, but with less HS and possibly a few bar less on the Reg pressure giving a few extra shots. I just started shooting PCPs, and this being my first FX, I may be way off base with my logic, but my credit card believed me, so I swiped it!! LOL.. If anything it will be a fun learning process and I will be eager to share what is happing with the results with everyone.

I talked to Utah air guns and it seems the 600 is the way to go. The larger plenum provides higher shot count but also quite a bit more power.

Maybe you guys can explain to me. How would a larger plenum give you a higher shot count? an .25 will use more air then a .22 right? so if I increased the size of the plenum, I will get more shots from my .22 also? a larger plenum uses less air because its more efficient? just curious. thanks in advance.

A larger plenum uses less air because its more efficient is correct. When the plenum allows air to push the pellet through the barrel, it will LOWER in pressure a certain amount depending on the power setting. So the larger the plenum, the lower the plenum pressure will decrease to provide the same amount of air energy, and the less that will be required to refill the plenum.

Thats the way I look at it, and I've experienced efficiency increases when adding plenum volume. You do get to a point of decreasing returns, so HUGE (like the Panthera) only really benefits efficiency when going very high power like over 100 FPE. For most applications the Medium plenum from the 500mm Panthera is as much as necessary...

Another way to get around this (and manufacturers haven't figured it out yet), it a super high flow regulator, which in essence would use the pressure bottle as the plenum...

I have been considering this very same avenue, 600mm but sticking with pellets. Keep us updated.

If I misled the statement, that wasn't the intention. I wasn't trying to compare the shot count to the .22. I was comparing the 500 shot count to the 600 shot count in .25 for my situation. I'm still learning about all this stuff myself, but this is how I looked at it between the 500 and 600. According to the FX website the:

500 has a plenum size of 62cc + 300cc bottle = 362cc of air @ 56 shots with a 25.39 gr pellet at 880 fps.
600 has a plenum size of 156cc + 300cc bottle = 456cc of air @ 60 shots with 26 gr hybrid slug at 900 fps

Now my plan is to shoot pellets with this in bench rest. From what I've read and listened to folks talk about slugs is that it takes more air to push them. If that is indeed the case and I can get 60 slug shots (+or-), I should be able to in theory get several more shots with pellets. Also, 600 has more combined air capacity over the 500, which again in theory should equal more shots. I could be way off in left field with my thinking of how this works, but that was my thought process.

I don't need a 100+ shot count, just high enough to hopefully get through a bench rest match plus sighters. If not, I'll top off with air. The main objective is as long as I can do my part, is to be able to have a gun that can hit a nat's a$$ every time at 50 and 100 yds.. LOL..
