@mmahoney, very good accurate review. I have experienced exactly the same as you with mine. I appreciate the frank, no nonsense review. I think one of the unspoken problems is with shooters that buy this as their primary chronograph. They won’t be able to compare it to a known calibrated chrony to verify proper positioning. It’s ok for field or bench use as a second check while shooting or sighting in prior to hunting, but not recommended as a primary device.

After watching your video yes I have to disagree LOL!

1) What do you expect from a $200 measuring instrument, would you be happy with being breathalised by a $200 intoximeter?

2) 2FPS? come on!

3) If the average chrono was as portable and as easy to use as the new FX unit many more people would use one, therefore the most accurate chrono in the world is useless if no one wants to carry it to and from and set it up at the range.

4) Using backlash as an example on a lathe or mill, as long as you factor in this error then it's irrelevant.

5) Using the principle of accuraccy and precision then again factoring these in will give you a good idea of where you are in the grand scheme of things.

6) After using the unit tonight I have to say it was easy and convenient, I will accept any errors within the scope of interpereting the results because if I had to use my normal chrono I would have no results, why? because I wouldnt have bothered so reasonable data is much better than no data at all!

Good point, so if you know and can factor in the error there is no problem is there, I use a SKAN at home.

it’s funny that I find this video, I was all

set to order one tomorrow but after what the few guys at the range went thru with theirs today I started having second thoughts, and now this video. Hmm. I guess I will also stick with my caldwell I watched 3 guys today each with their new fx chrono and each one gave substantially different reading on each other’s guns example guy 1 with his gun and his own chrony average 880fps now same guy same gun but using guy#2’s fx chrony it averaged 957fps anyways they each played the swapping game and the numbers just were making no sense, long story short I have lost any type of interest in this unit. Just my two cents seen first hand

You're results more or less agree with mine.

I suspect, and certainly hope the problems we're all seeing are due to the lame software, and not the hardware.

One thing I did was to try a different phone without moving the unit at all. I got different results. I'm not exactly sure what that proved, but it is interesting.

my caldwell has been right there with other chronographs of the same type these wireless things are going to have to get returned by users and figured out by fx before I will give them a second look. The guys I mentioned at the club today are sending theirs back tomorrow we will see how it works out for them. I can think of other things I can spend $200 on lol. Beautiful day up here in the north east for shooting today finally. It’s either been way to hot and humid or wind and rain. Hope everyone had a great day also

In all fairness to FX, if you do have a real Chrony, and can use that to verify the correct positioning of the FX unit with each of your guns against a known speed for your specific gun, it is handy to have. My point was that unless you can do that you could be lulled into using bum data as reality. 

FYI, I’ve had this little unit (photo below) for a couple of years now and it always works. It does read in meters per second, so you have the daunting task of multiplying by approx 3.3, but it’s accurate within a meter per second with both my Caldwell’s. I’ve even shot it 4 or 5 times as you can see by the black duct tape at the rear of the unit and it still works. I think I paid $69 on eBay. Battery charge lasts for months. As long as you shoot through the little tunnel you’re good to go.

I bought mine on a whim because UA had just gotten them in and had one available. Maybe I got lucky but all I have to do is set mine up about 1-2 inches below the muzzle, level with the muzzle, facing down range and it works perfectly. I've tested mine twice now against my Caldwell and It's only about 2fps different most of the time. As long as it's consistent, whether high or low, that's what I'm concerned with. I love it, I can throw it in my shooting bag, set it up in 15 seconds and it does what it's supposed to, when it's supposed to. More than I can say for my gun lately! LOL
