Gamo Gamo Arrow review (my first pcp)

Hey everyone! First post here (I usually just lurk).

I've been wanting to pick up a backyard-friendly PCP for a while. I’m in a suburban neighborhood, so my max shooting distance is about 25 yards. I was going back and forth between the Stormrider and the Arrow. The Arrow ended up winning just because of the price—$179, plus I had a $10 off coupon. The rep I talked to also recommended the Arrow over the Stormrider, so it checked all the boxes I was looking for to get started in the hobby.

03/25 – Ordered the Gamo Arrow in .177. I added the $10 “check it before shipping” thing just to avoid getting a dud.
03/31 – It showed up.

First impressions:
It felt solid, fit me really well, and was super easy to pump using a hand pump I got from amazon. Took about 60 pumps to go from the low green zone up to around 3200 psi.

The thing shot great. Really quiet too, my phone showed 88 dB for the Arrow compared to 98 dB from a Daisy 880. I got tight groups with Crosman, H&N, and JSB pellets. Even Daisy pellets weren’t terrible, so it didn’t seem super picky at least for 20ish yards

My 8-year-old could handle it just fine. We spent a couple afternoons in the backyard plinking together, and it was nice not having to pump after every shot.

04/15 – By now I had put maybe 500–600 shots through it. I got a second mag and started shooting like normal. First 4 shots were fine. On the 5th shot, it suddenly got much louder, had a harsh recoil (for a PCP), and pellets were flying about 8 inches low. Finished the mag and figured something was off.

Reached out to the place I bought it from, they said it sounded like a blown seal. They offered a return or exchange, and I chose the return. Didn’t want to open it up and risk messing with the warranty.

Before anyone says anything, I did read nobody1’s super detailed review and saw that others had issues with the transfer port. But I figured, eh, that was a while ago, maybe they fixed it? Probably? Maybe? Hopefully? Nope.

nobody1 review here

So now I’ve got a pump and a tank... and no PCP. Back to searching for a new rifle

Good choice on the return, there have been some issues with all the plastic action parts on the Arrows. Shame its a neat little pcp if it was a little more reliable.

The Gamo Urban and Coyote are on a whole other level tho if you wanted to try one of those. I have 4 Gamo/BSA pcps and all of them are wicked accurate and solidly built. My Urban is several years old and has many thousands of rounds through it. There is also the Stoeger Scout/Ranger and the Notos for known good entry budget options.

And welcome to the forum

Search the web for PINTY AIR RIFLES. The pinty rifle in .22 is an excellent light shooting rifle. Search reviews and you will find a $40.00 discount code.
Hey thanks for the recommendation! Never heard of these guy before but regulated and 80 shot count in a smaller package within my budget .. this checks all the boxes too

Thanks for the warm welcome! And yeah its a bummer since its a neat concept but execution was meh, before the precious Pinty recommendation I was actually looking at the Notos, only bummer is i have a ton of .177 lol. I would love a Coyote but thats a little but out of my range just for now, but might be worth saving for
Gamo Urban. Then get back to shooting without the junk clock ticking.
You know, I was debating between the arrow and urban but went with the aarow cause of the price ... i should of just bought once and cried once lol

Welcome to the forum. I am also relatively new to this forum and airguns. I would say that if you haven't already made your purchase and if you are looking for a good deal on the more budget friendly pcps give Pyramyd air a chance. I was fortunate enough to find an amazing deal around new years. A $400ish rifle for $138.00. (Hatsan at44 177 qe long) I hope this doesn't come off like bragging. I just wanted to inform you of an option that you may not have considered. I hope you are able to get something that you and your son can enjoy together soon.

Have a good day

ooo thanks for the heads up on the spring I'll do some research and start messing with it after a month or so
The place you ordered it from may have addressed it if they do airgun work and aren’t just a seller. If not, there’s info here and on GTA about guys snipping the spring in those 177’s. They seemed very happy with the results.

Kopi , Good choice on AR for the replacement gun. Today I just ordered my 3rd Stoeger gun from them( Rich) ,good people there. I've talked to both him & his
wife w/ questions & orders. The Stoegers are NOT backyard friendly , maybe in a back yard w/ a good moderator. I don't have any experience w/ Akelas but AR
does great work. Enjoy!

I got so excited I bought it with out researching. After researching looks like it would be a good candidate to learn on and use at a local airgun club near by. Also really happy I can support a small business, I can see myself going back there for more lol
Whaaaaa? No way the Akela, Cayden, and Kratos are wonderful well built pcps. Dont think of them as entry starter throw away type pcps. Getting one for a couple hundo in any configuration is one of those deals you wont see many times in your life. If you take care of it you can pass it down to your kids.

ETA: I might be misreading your post, just wanted to give you some assurance buying an Akela from AR is a good move.

Oh yeah, I can definitely see how it could come across that way lol

But yeah, I totally agree - it really outshines everything else at that price point. I was checking out Marauders but they were out of my price point, so grabbing this felt like a total steal given the build quality and price. Plus, the availability of spare parts and support is a huge bonus. I don’t see it as just a beginner or throwaway PCP like the Arrow lol. Long story short what I meant by my post was I can use it to dip my toes into field target at the local airgun club when I wanna do more than just plink in the back yard
