This is the valve assembly. The poppet stem is the silver part that's sticking out. I've never heard of a broken one on a Gamo pcp but slamming the hammer against it at 4000 psi could damage it.

Yes I will 100% make sure to empty out the air.

Can this be done by just turning the gauge - same way I released the air from 4K to 2k?

Or do I need to de-gas using the tool from the back of the gun?

I would use the degassing tool, that's the way it was designed to remove the air.

Dugan, I checked the GamoUSA website couldn't find degassing tool maybe call if you want one. I would do what you've been doing. Go slow you should be just fine. Bill

I'm still waiting on a spring and stock alignment stud from across the pond, it's close to impossible to get parts for these guns in the US
