Very interested in the Garmin Xero C1. I noticed in the online documentation is says to setup the target 20 yards from the device. I'd like a chrono I can use in the garage at short distance (10-15' max.). Can the Garmin Xero do this or is a traditional light sensor chrono the only option for short distances?

I have not shot a pellet or slug or bullet with mine indoors at close range, so cannot answer directly. However I have tested with a rubber band, pulled tightly over tip of finger then released, fired directly over Xero into a wall about 2 meters away. Xero reads it every time within 2 meters.

So who knows with a bullet\pellet, will need some testing.

Was shooting with mine in a very shaded area, never missed, that was 10M. I do not think indoors matters with the radar.

Being based on radar, I would think signal reflections (e.g. off walls) would be more of an issue than lighting.

The Xero uses a 24GHz RADAR signal, using the Doppler effect, to bounce signals off the projectile as it flies. The reflected signal will be at a slightly different frequency than what was transmitted. In addition, the reflected frequency is altered by whether the projectile is moving towards or away from the Xero. These frequency shifts of the reflections yield the velocity. Lighting and sound (another medium where the Doppler effect takes place) have no effect on the system.

Mine compares well with my pro crono and I’ve used it with air from 810-1020 fps and with my 22 lr. I think its a quality instrument that you can just put in a case with your gun and set up in 2 min

I have used it as close as 15' indoors, in a very crowded shop, shooting down a narrow path with lots of odds and ends on either side. No problems at all.
