Huben GK1: What Silencer for Backyard Quiet? (or almost)

Wow!! First time shooting with my Donny FL Tanto and it works well. No hearing protection needed. It slightly obscures the front iron sight, but not enough for me as a shooter to adjust. My first group looked tighter. I’m going to keep shooting to see if that’s a consistent trend.

Some of the 3D printed moderators look a lot more streamlined to the GK1’s design. Y’all have some good looking moderators.

Using a 3d printed moderator. I used Bambu PA-CF filament for the first time and I am super pleased with the results. Perfect thread profile, no stringing, good surface finish, 10g lighter than print in PETG with same settings. Since the moderator I'm using is not cylindrical it needs to be "clocked" using some sort of spacer in order to line up with the gun when tightened up. I bought some 1/2" barrel shims for $10 delivered. Very handy, easy to justify buying... I have enough shims to do multiple guns.

Good to know that those things exist

I didn't know about these washer shims, and made my own, by making and grinding a washer by hand to fit. Tedious, to say the least, and hard to keep them flat. It's astounding that 5 degrees of error is only about 0.0007" for a 20 TPI thread. [ 1/20 * 5/360 = 0.0006944" ] By the third washer, I got pretty good at making them and quite a bit faster. Good to know about these pre-made washers!

Seems to me that if you print the moderator then shims ought to be a piece of cake.

Printing is tough to keep the necessary tolerances required to avoid a shim. Its possible, if you have the original CAD file to make a minute change in dimension, or even to slightly rotate the start of the female thread. I'd think rotating the helix might be easier than adjusting the thickness to the precision required.

Simple FDM printers are ok, but they are not terrific at holding dimensions, at least not to 0.0001". Part of it is the precision of the printer, and the other part is the precision of the slicer. I've printed U-channel sections to hold a DRO read head, and the slicer really has issues with getting the inside dimension correctly, it's not one of the things that is optimized. Likewise overall length. It's close, but not micrometer close. Simply a limitation of the technology, and how well one's machine is calibrated.

Basically, it's not very easy to print a precision shim to the tolerance required, which demands 0.00014" (1 degree) accuracy. You can fudge it a little, but not by much.

Have you shot the GK1 at higher power levels using this printed moderator? Such as 35fpe and up. Or does it mainly serve its purpose around the low power levels?

I shoot my GK1 in two modes. Minimum power and about 40fpe. Mod works for both... pellet/slug impact is the loudest thing in either case.

GK1: What Silencer for Backyard Quiet?

Based on your personal experience:
What silencer would I need to get the GK1 down to "backyard quiet" or almost so?

Specs:
.22cal
15FPE
(650fps with a 16gr)

I understand that bigger and longer gets the gun quieter, but I'd like to stick with the minium length necessary....

Thanks for your input. 😊

Matthias
In order of quiet:

Hugget was best
Then Weihrauch
Then zero DB
Then impulse Air
And the loudest was my new Brocock moderator - WTH?

I use a 3D printed one on my .25 GK1, it does a really good job making it backyard friendly and is only 3" long. The diameter is 25mm, so the iron sights can be used.

I thought you used a 1350 with the orange baffle? I bought the exact same one and it works very well. Where did you get this suppressor? Thanks in advance.

Matthias,

I finally tried out the Huben moderator this afternoon. My 0.22 is tuned for 20 foot pounds with 15.89 Hades. It's plenty quite for backyard use. Kelly is correct, unlike any other supplemental moderator I have used there is no charge in point of impact.

what does this mean? there is no charge in point of impact

I recently acquired a .22 V1 that came with a Huben Shadow suppressor. Shooting JSB 16gr @ ~660fps, the Shadow is astonishingly quiet for its size & weight (5.25", 2 oz).
I have several more airgun suppressors on various guns which were tried out on the GK1.
The Weihrauch is considerably quieter but is 7.5"x1", weighs 4 oz & slightly obsures the front sight. However, I could still hit small targets @ 20y with the open sights.
The Huma 30-4 is almost as quiet as the Weihrauch, 7.2"x1.33", 4.6 oz & completely obscures the front sight. As a 3 section, it was similar to the Shadow.
The Huggett Astille-Plus is as quiet as the Weihrauch & has a slightly lower tone, 7"x1.44", 6 oz. In its shorter form, it was only slightly quiter than the Shadow.
Both Buck-Rail (thin & thick) suppressors are quite a bit louder
than the Shadow.
The Subscriber/Torquemaster 2.8", GK1 specific suppressor is in between the thin & thick Buck-Rails. It lives handsomely on my PP700-SA, shooting JSB 16gr @ 500fps.
The S/T 6.5" oval, GK1 specific suppressor is a bit louder than the Shadow. However, it is designed to suit this gun at much higher velocities. To be fair, I'll need to up it's power and compare the 6.5" oval to the others.
So far, the Shadow is my favorite for this pistol because it surely is backyard quiet, looks nice & proportional on the GK1, and its weight is nearly unnoticed when shooting one-handed.
When shooting off hand and stupid quiet is needed,
the Weihrauch works nicely.
When shooting from bags, the weight of the Astille-Plus adds a little stabilility.
I hope that my observations are of some use.

Thank you all for shedding more light on the question of silence for the GK1.

It is also great to see some photos of various models installed. Thanks. 👍🏼

In a few weeks I will have 2 new models to test, that will hopefully replace the current Sumo .177/.22 with something both shorter and lighter -- and molded after the GK1 profile....
@subscriber is my go-to guy when I need customized silence. Teamed up with GTA's TorqueMaster they are a very capable and pleasant task force to work with! 😊

I admit I am as power-hungry as the next guy (or a bit more🤦🏼‍♂️). However, at the same time -- I am starting to feel the fascination of seeing a pigeon drop off its perch without anybody hearing the shot. I'm pretty sure these silencers are not the last ones I will buy....! 😆

Mike,

That rapid disassembly is not surprising. In fact, the original write up in which this LDC was developed stated that your warrantee expires, if your GK1 dumps the air tank.

It is like a 5 MPH rated bumper taking the vehicle structure with it, should you crash at 50 MPH.

I trust that while the event was ear-splittingly loud, it was not harmful. That the plastic bits flew forwards and outwards.

Your picture suggest very good layer to layer adhesion, as the fractures are through the material, not at the layer boundaries.
