Western Airguns GMI SLUGS AND ,MY NEW .30 CALIBER RATTLER FROM JAMMING TO SUB MOA AT LONG RANGE

HI I can finally do a write up on my Western Rattler I bought from AOA used last month , well I spent literately weeks on this gun and can finally say it is a deadly accurate gun which shoots any weight slug and casted ammo and my GMI swaged Sub MOA and shoots any slug from 740fps beyond 99p fpa. I sold my Evol as I am Swagging slugs and collecting Data currently with swag press , ok this has been very frustrating so I will start from day 1 when gun arrived ,It was dirth dusty ,I cleaned barrel there were lead partices in moderator cleaned everything .
Loaded gun with pellets 60 grain ones , mag holds 17 after 3 shots it jammed , I had to remove barrel and hammer deformed one back in magizine , my reg started at 150 after gun jammed it dumped air in bottle ,
Next say jsb 50 gainers same thing 5 shots and jammed , next time I tried Gmi slugs and sam3e thing ammo jammed in magizine , and reg was 200 bar ,
so I loaded 2 slugs at TIME and shot 10 rounds at 50 yards omg looked like I ahot it with a shot gun , I also tried 2 of my donnfl both gets got broken in my shogun and emperor i was not happy I called aoa a few times tried a few things like adjusting more air to magizine , this is semi auto and you can adjust this ,did not help and my reg was horrible , I ended out taking gun apart completely

I founf so many things wrong with gun , action , loading , reg it was horrible this gun was sold for over 2k . to make it worse , no diagrams anywhere online and also wrote to western 3x with no replies , Well I learned the LCS sk19 is same gun with many things on line for this pne ,
ok Lets dig into issues
1 my regulator es was like 140fos , due to the fact the entire regulator was solid Rust all washers rusted together ,
2. there was rust on the piston for reg here it sealed along with sand or lead particles , I cleaned everything polished washers with 10,000 frit paper and oil and bore with jb bore polish , I reassembled regulator , I then refinished delron seat ,by hand I tried to flip disk but ended up cleaning debris and polishing it all flat again , and reassembled
3, Barrel , I measured barrel muzzzle and breech and also magisine , well mag ,300,, the breech .301 and muzzle ,294 . you wild think .295 would be best however in fully auto and semi auto ammo must stay seated or they will flop and jam , I tried every size and ended up with ,300 aS ,299 sould move and can jam , so , if I did re-barrelled it opt for muzzle ,298 like every other 30cal out there as this mush drag means have to clean more then norm ,
Barrel issues ok now for barrel flaws My barrel had 4 flaws , 2
being breech and muzzle not square and in middle it got tight then loose then tight , the crown was not square and both ends not square off by ,003 and ,006 , I checked up barrel in lathe squareed both ends , then i cut a 13degree crown , I then repaired a gouge near muzzle my guess is last owner sleaning rod hit ,
then I polished barrel on lathe i cur PEN MADE A CENTERING BUSHING , AND MY CLEANING ROD , i MADE A CAST OF MY BARREL WITH LOW TEMP LEAD 214F , I INSTALLED THREADS IN ONE END AND ATTACHED TO MY CLEANING ROD , AND PUT 240 GRIT AND POLISHED BARREL , THEN CLEANED AND THEN REPEATED WITH 480 GRIT CLEANED THEN 600 GRIT CLEANED
FINISHED OFF WITH JB POLISHING PASTE , NOW BARREL IS FLAWLESS , i THEN REBLUED MACHINING ENDS TO MACH BARREL AND REASSEMBLED , I THEN MAKE SLUGS 15 SIZES FROM 44 GRAINS TO 88 GRAINS , AND SHOT TODAY , THE GUN IS AMAZING THE SLUGS PREFORMED TOTALLY FLAWLESS WITH ANY SPEEDS NO JAMS NO MAG NOT CYCLING , i SHOT OVER 300 SLUGS TODAY , i NOW CAN POST PICTURES OF AMMO I MADE AND ALSO SOME GROUPS AND DATA ,

hi Maumau , I got rid of my evol to test hi power slugs I am swaging my ecvol was 110fpe gun the rattler is double this , but when i got it it jammed 7 times and 4 to 5 inch group at 50 yards , I didnt know if ammo or gun but after many many days sorted every issue out and learned reviews on this gun which people say are slug or pellet picky are not true after issues fixed it shoots anything well that stays seated in the ,300 magisine ,

no more then anyone , however I worked on cars my whole life so I took apart losts of things , it isnt hard to fix a pcp but it is difficult is when you have no info or diagrams , which makes it worse , I dont get why western does not release a parts and diagram for things like all others like Fx air arms , hatsan , , edgun , air arms ect , and when writing to them they do not even reply , for a expensive airgun which costs $ 2700 and no customer support or manual its poor buisness , I mean you buy things that dont work when you get them and they dont even reply geeze

MAUMAU did you ever think all the new guns had issues and this is why used guns keep being resold ? as a mechanic many new cars were lemonlawed threw yrs and down road things got updated and resolved, aoa selling a used rattler with a moa barrel as of last nite , this one is new months old and it is for resale again why ? probably had some issues that were not addressed or have been since they sold it back to them either way someone resold them a new gun

This is absolutely incredible, GMI does make good equipment but when you pair it with equally great shooter and a fine tuned weapon the results are absolutely stunning. To be frank, when @jwrabbit123 mentioned that his gun was jammed with GMI slugs, we went down to the drawing board to investigate, we put out a new set of manufacturing guidelines to re verify if things were in check, but now it’s satisfactory to see both the gun and ammo perform flawlessly. And guys this is the same methodology we had used while working with @FX Airguns , any and all guns can shoot slugs, all it takes is a systematic approach and I think Western airguns have a champ on their hand, all they need is to work on the flaws .

Looks like your hard work paid off.

Was the savings buying used worth all of the aggravation?

Thanks for sharing!
@MAUMAU Lou may have another perspective, but my take is this. The scary part is that it’s hard to attribute which issues that the soap encountered to the gun being used as opposed to issues that are the product of manufacturing or assembly. For a gun that costs this much (AOA sells these things new for around $2700, used around $2000), who wants to do this sort of work to an expensive gun? I’ve seen enough of them pass through the “used airguns” section on AOA’s site that I wonder, why does it appear that so many being re-sold?

Had the OP purchased his Rattler new, I think it’s safe to say that he would have shipped the gun at least once to the service center. If all issues were not ironed out, his gun may have been out of commission and traveling back and forth for months on his dime. This, in my opinion, is a worse situation to be in. It is probably the position that a significant percentage of Western Sidewinder/Rattler consumers may find themselves in because attempting to work on a new Sidewinder/Rattler voids the brief warranty period. Then couple that with mediocre customer service. The outcome can very realistically lead to disappointment for many disillusioned customers. One should not have to be an airgunsmith the enjoy an airgun, especially an expensive airgun.

I think buying new and encountering serious issues would be even more frustrating with this sort of warranty.

I applaud the OP’s efforts and results. However, how many of you reading this feel competent or qualified to do what the OP has described in this thread?

HI ken no it was not GMI slugs make NO changes it was gun , Please do not revise the 30 caliber It is by far best ever slug , this gun when I got it jammed even jsb pellets for any members reading or having jamming issues , the small square loading actuator was loaded with lead and the grease held debris this and also if you load a undersized projectile it will jam , they make this gun in 30 cal and 357 same applies to all ,

also western wont even answer customer I emailed them 3 times it was very frustrating , and btw the gun is so easy to service I hope for others with issues they post diagrams it is a $2800 gun , 90 percent of us do our own work and why would anything like cleaning out lead particles void a warranty this is totally absurd

to enace I met a guy here btw I sent him a magizine , he bought a used ,30 cal like 2 weeks before mine he tried 1 magizine and it jammed He reboxed it in 1 hour and sent it back , I am waiting for the serial number I am willing to bet it is gun I did buy , it was dirty inside with debris and rusted regulator and yes I paid $2080 , I noticed yet another used one there yesterday with submoa barrel this is a new build and guess what it was sold for same issues as we had me and u had 3 of identical issues I fixed mine with 0 prts but i did order spare for future

What is completely irritating is tha AOA received the gun in a trade for a newer gun . They pay next to nothing for it . Those liers don't even go through the gun to be sure is working properly. They sell it and they dare to print a group like the gun is in good order. And you know is impossible that the gun you have in your hand have done such a group. It happened to me a few months ago with a Cricket. But I shipped back next day AM .. I wouldn't even wait for the RMA # me personally not buying anything else from AOA .. but I'm really happy my friend that you with such a talent managed to sort every thing out n now have a great shooter..👍👍

Amazing work and fixing the issues. I don't have access to a lathe or the skills to pull off this repair which shouldn't have been necessary in the first place. I would have been pissed the **** off finding a gun I just purchased with rusted internal parts, a barrel that needed machining to correct.... much more patience and acceptance than I have. Only thing I would have done is taken that thing back to AOA and demanded my money back. One thing I just learned from this is future purchases I may make will be from local stores so I can physically bring the thing back if needed and not have to rely on getting through on the phone.

While I could probably figure out how to get the rifle operating again, I would have zero interest in doing so.

At one point I was really interested in the Rattler and Sidewinder, but with so many issues and a questionable warranty, my desire for one dissipated. If I buy something and it does not work as advertised, it goes back.

@jwrabbit123 Can we see close up photos of the GMI slugs that you swaged? If you can recover some from media like clay is wet newspaper I’m curious about how they expand. I don’t know if you shoot into various media to test expansion. Just thought I’d ask. And where did you find a 60 grain .30 pellet? Who makes those?
