Goin’ hoggin’?!

I’m talking about shooting those wily 4 legged critters, not something you do at the bar!

So I’ve seen videos of people hunting hogs on YouTube with air rifles. There’s a guy who took a bunch of them with a .25 Air Venturi. He dropped them all with one shot one kill placement, but I’m sure he’s extremely proficient. How realistic is it for an average hunter to successfully and ethically take down something like a hog with an airgun, let alone a .25? How about a .30? This was in Texas mind you where it seems you can kill hogs whenever and however you feel like. Not sure if it’s a legal take method in California.

I know there are a lot of variables (and legality) to consider, and I’m sure people aren’t really going after hogzillas. Is airgunning the ursines really viable or more of a novelty?

I take feral hogs on my property frequently with airguns. I find they are less forgiving than my powder burners, but I have dispatched quite a few with either my .457 Texan SS and even my since sold Huben K1 in .25 cal (Brain or neck shot was critical with this caliber). If you search my user name you might find some pots I made with videos, it's been a while though, not sure the links are still up.

However, I also live in (east) Texas, so not sure how that applies to you being in California. Best of luck!

WHERE are you in California? Was thinking Catalina due to the Javelina in your handle. I'm just north of San Diego (Oceanside) & me & my FX Boss are dying to hog hunt. Catalina is the only place that's really known for Javelina that's why I made the assumption. I DO believe it's legal to take them with airguns but have to research what caliber.
EDIT: Just looked, guess it's NOT legal in Cali for hogs with an airgun (not that they're INCAPABLE). Small game, yes. From what I understand. Good thing considering the thousands of Ground Squirrels I've taken, all on private properties.
EDIT AGAIN: Now I just found that as of 2022, we ARE allowed hunting of feral hogs, passed without opposition by Newsom (SB856) due to the growing population & subsequent problems in California.

you have the right tool for the job.. airforce texan..I recently got into the Condor.. it's the most powerful 22 caliber airgun I have shot, yet it can be turned down to shoot like a normal pellet gun..
I got so excited the other day, found out that I could get fiber optic sight for it.. it's my one complaint, it's rare to find a PCP rifle now with open sights or even the option for open sights..
