Grand Prix Format

This is a post to see what other Grand Prix shooters opinions are about the current grand prix format and what I'd like to propose. At the moment Grand Prix matches are run over three days. Day one is a sight in and registration day usually with a pistol ft match in the afternoon. Then Saturday and Sunday mornings are for the Rifle match. What I'd like to do is offer three days of rifle field target. Currently AAFTA caps the grand Prix at 120 shots total. This would mean three, 40 shot rifle matches. Using this format the days shooting will be over by lunch giving everyone time to relax and explore. My reason for this change is that I'd rather put my time and effort into the rifle match and not have to split my attention with a pistol match as well. Having said that there is no reason a pistol match can't be held though it would have to be done by someone else.

Oh, and Yes, we will be holding a GP in June on the 10th, 11th and 12th so this pertains to that. I'll be announcing soon so would like to have the format decided upon by late April at the latest. Thanks guys and don't be shy.

Well ... As a 2 time GP 1st place winner in Hunter PCP ( 2018 & 2021 ), Doing the traveling and its associated Costs in Fuel, Food & Stay for a game where there are really no financial perks / purses to win any $$ offset. 3 days ( Being a pistol shooter too ) is a stretch IMO.

If said matches added another day ( Don't forget travel time or stay on either end ) likely the participation of GP events would be even less than it is now.

As we move this conversation along ....

Many folks again for time reasons, practice access etc ... Drive on fridays, arrive at some point and earlier if shooting pistol which for most events out west starts @ 3:00 in the afternoon on friday. So really if shooting were to start Friday morning ... yea you need an extra day to get there the day before if I'm understanding you correctly ?



O' .... I personally dislike many GP's being 50-52 shots a day. Come On we traveled at great expense and came to shoot .... SO LETS SHOOT 60 shots per day in the rifle events making a 120 shot match in 2 days !!

As someone that shoots both rifle and pistol, I look forward to GP matches that include pistol. When you remove pistol from a GP match, my interest in attending also falls off. I like GP matches that hold the pistol match on the Friday afternoon and rifle on Saturday and Sunday. If the pistol match is moved to Saturday afternoon that is fine with me. But if you remove pistol, I for one would most likely not attend.

Thanks for weighing in Dana. I'm not opposed to the pistol match. No one at the club shoots pistol though so its a perceived(by me) burden. If another shooter or group of them wanted to come Thursday or early friday to set up a course they are welcome.

As for the number of shots per day/event we can run 68 per day for 136 totalif allowed. I will likely ask for such from AAFTA.

As a long-time match director who has put on more than a few GP's, I prefer to have only a 2-day 120+ shot rifle match since getting that all setup takes quite a bit of time. I prefer to use Friday for folks to practice and get signed up. Many of my competitors that arrive Fridays also like to have the signup and practice on Friday with shooting on Saturday and Sunday. However, I currently host pistol matches for the GP per AAFTA guidelines and because some people want to shoot a pistol match too. I tried hosting the pistol match on Saturday afternoon to keep to a 2-day match, but many competitors were tired after 4+ hours in the Texas heat shooting the first rifle match and didn't shoot well, or preferred not to shoot a second match that was pistol. Due to these circumstances, IF i have enough pistol entries, I will host a pistol match on Friday.

Like others, I like shooting 60+ shots per match to feel like I am not wasting my time.

I do agree with Jeff, that for many who shoot pistol that doing so Friday has proven the most wanted. Taking on a 40 shot pistol match after a long mornings rifle match, get lunch and some rest and go back out for a few more hours when warmer and generally windier too really has gotten push back.



Here on the west coast ( CA / NV / OR ) we have seen in recent years about 30-40% of shooters in rifle at a GP event shoot a pistol too & its increasing every season.

I've received permission for 68 shots a day so expect that. Another issue with the pistol match is a lack of targets. I'm not excited about having to either take down my private course, or have to use take down rifle targets and put them back. Were my targets easy to get to it wouldn't be bad but most require a ladder to access. 

Anyways I'll ask around once the season gets going here if any of the pistol shooters want to take on the task of setting up the match.

At ASC, we use the same targets for rifle and pistol. We have enough now that we don't need to reuse them during a grand prix match, but we used to do that in the past. We repainted after each match, and moved them around to comply with AAFTA rule about moving 50% of the targets if the same course is shot a second time (or the next day).
