Ground Hog bait?

Try fruit, like watermelon. But I recommend you wire the slice off to something immovable. Because the ground hog may try to drag it back into its hole/home.

According to my nearest neighbor a vegetable garden works really well. On my property they’re just another among many appreciated critters. My neighbor and I have come to an understanding about that.

Get some wire mesh to hold.a chunk there "inside a cage" or against the ground so it's harder for them to get at while still being visible and such? Maybe like an old grill screen or something that you already have

That's a good idea. I have a roll of 3/8 or 1/2 mesh around here somewhere. That should work out perfectly. I always just take a bite out of a yellow apple so they can smell it, and toss it in the yard. That brings them in striking distance every time!

I ran out of patience waiting for them as a teenager and started setting leg hold traps at the mouth of the hole. I learned quickly to make sure the traps are chained to a solid stake, those buggers are tough. They not very friendly when you pull them back out of the hole by the trap either.

I found cantelope to work great, but really any fruit will work. Watermelon, apples, strawberries, peaches, etc. The stronger the scent of the fruit the better, that way they find it easier/quicker.
