Grouping on blank paper

Today I tried shooting my Umarex SA10, Excite Econ 2 pellets, with blank paper targets (A4 paper with just a black sharpie dot) each magazine (8 rounds).

Noticed a nice improvement from the first target to the 2-3, then a couple of bad ones (lack of concentration?), then again some better ones. Last shots in double action were higher than the single action ones, but after the finger "adapted" to the new trigger pull they were quite consistent.

The gun is not shooting high as I thought, maybe just a bit. Probably I'm just doing something bad I need to understand.

For reference, grouping in the good target ones was like 5-7 cm if you exclude a couple of fliers each ones.
I need to improve and work on repeatability, if I just concentrate a little less I start shooting worse.

One thing I noticed is that I'm vertical stringing... Even in better targets, holes are nearer but vertically aligned...

Opinions? Thank you!

Back in the day, I'd use a tripod mounted laser as a way to mark my point of aim. Set it, shoot a group, move the dot a little and then shoot another group.

I eventually went to concentric circles made with a sharpie and a washer used as a stencil. Like this.

You might try that to see if keeping the crosshair centered is easier that way.

Cheers,

You need to limit the variables. Use the black dot as your aim point. Set the gun up on a table and some kind of sandbag or other rest to eliminate your movement of the gun from shot to shot. For the first 10 rounds do NOT adjust the site. Simply see how the gun groups without any changes. Keep it properly lubricated at all times and shoot 10 groups of 5 rounds each using the same pellet weight and style. Then clean the barrel and do that cycle again. By the time you shoot 150 rounds your gun will be broken in or shot in. Then try a few different pellet types and weights and see what your gun likes. Then spend some time getting the zero set on your gun at 3 or 4 different distances. It isn’t a quick process but you’ll find out what your gun is capable of doing. After that practice and more practice.

The short answer my coach would tell me is….vertical = breathing…lateral = trigger pull. Not gospel, but things to keep in mind. Good luck! John

Distance to target?
type of pellet / weight ?
speed of pellet ?
type of shooting surface?
