Groups of the Day, offhand at 50 yds

I walked outside today with a 20 caliber PCP in my hands, and no real plan. I saw an old stove I had dug out a couple weeks back to get hauled away. I took a shot off hand, at about 50 yards, and realized I had a great shoot and see target. So I spent the morning shooting off hand at the stove. The rifle is a converted blue streak, that came as part of the lot I bought from Ingvar’s auctions last year. It is one of my very favorite rifles. It weighs about 3 pounds.

Here are my best three shot groups:

Then I kept shooting at the group next to the bolt. After 10 shots:

15 shots;

20 shots, just under 3” ctc.

25 shots: was getting tired I think.

I've never seen a Sheridan converted from Pneumatic to PCP...That is a beauty and a very good idea!!..I have a Sheridan I bought back in 1966 for $27.50 brand new, it is the SILVER STREAK version and it should have more than 20000 pellets and many cotton tails and small game I used to hunt with it back in TX; I recently fully restored all the internals with original parts to preserve it 100% original (See pics); the exterior looks factory new or better (not a single minute scratch or dent anywhere: metal or wood)...This is one of my favorite guns with tons of good memories!...Nevertheless, I am very interested in learning about that conversion for another gun (black) like yours that I also have...

Does it have a regulator or not and at what pressure do you fill the air cylinder?...I've never tested the pressure but I believe they never operated above 1000 PSI (just guessing) as the valve and other internals are not very HPA rated, but then the valve and internals in your gun could've been modified for HPA...Will you please provide me details of cylinder construction, pressure filled, if regulated or not?..This is one good project I am going to pursue very soon (like as soon as I hear back from you! 😁)

Regards,

AZ

Beautiful rifle!

unfortunately (as it pertains to your question) I bought this rifle in an auction. I do know who did the work, but it was 20-30 years ago, and the gentleman has passed.

i’m totally guessing on the fill pressure which is obviously a little scary. I don’t go above 1500. It is not regulated.

i’m not sure who would tackle such a job, it’s obviously very custom. I would build it to similar pressures to a discovery. In fact this rifle behaves very much like a discovery if that helps.

Flintsack,

Thank you so much for your response...That gun is a beauty and the stock with the schnable tip is gorgeous...

Yes, this is one of those projects that is not difficult, but that requires time and ingenuity...Actually for what you will spend in mods you are much better off buying a new PCP, but this is about something that brings back memories with modern technology...I have no use for the black 1967 Sheridan and this is a good candidate, I will make it as yours with an optional regulator inside the air cylinder (will test regulated and unregulated to see which one works better)...This will be my late summer project.

I wonder how many shots do you get at 500 PSI and at what velocities...Have you tested for velocity and maybe counted the shots?

Best regards,

AZ

Very cool. I look forward to seeing the end product.

as far as shot count, when I go for a walk I usually take about 12 to 15 pellets. The first shot is of course much louder and faster than the last few. I would guess the range is around 650 down to about 500. I will check.

When I was shooting the targets in the original post, I was shooting five shots, And then topping it off. Yours will obviously have a higher fill pressure, and with a regulator give many more shots.

The thing I really like about this rifle is it’s so light weight. It’s like carrying around a feather. I also had one back in high school in the 70s. An original blue streak.

Finding one of these may make your project easier. The one on top is a standard CO2 blue streak. The one on the bottom is an F type. The ironic thing is I bought the CO2 rifle on top with the intent to have it re-stocked in a fancier fashion. Something I would have roughed out and finished myself.

I no longer feel the need to scratch that itch.

after spending the weekend shooting my original CO2 propelled BlueStreak, I am doubting very much I would convert that rifle to PCP if it was the only one I owned. I think you could get plenty of enjoyment out of it as a CO2 rifle. You could still do a wonderful custom stock for it. The velocity it shoots with the CO2, is perfectly suited for the rifle, and packs plenty of Punch.

The converted rifle that I discussed in this post now feels somewhat like an over bore. Kind of like putting a V-8 in a Datsun 240 Z.

I would suggest at least trying the rifle as it is before you have it converted. I just did a post on that original CO2 rifle in unmodified condition.

Obviously your call, and either decision is a good one. I just wanted to give you a little more data before making your choice.
