GX compressor newbie with questions/problems

I need help.... I received my GX CS4 compressor the other day and finally had a chance to set it up and try it out. I first attempted to top off my 9L tank from 2200 to 4500. The tank and set up are from Joe Broncato with a slow flow valve. I let it run for a few minutes but it didn't seem to want to fill(no guage movement that I could see on the pump or the tank) I did smell a faint burning smell but I figured it was because the pump was new. I let it go another minute or two then shut it down with no success. I'm wondering if there is a one way valve in Joe's gauge set up or the slow flow valve is an issue. I can call him during the week but I figured I'd ask here since I'm posting. Retrieved some guns to top off and see what happens. Filled 2 with no problem. The third one I had to stop manually because I noticed a problem with the gauge. Somehow one of the needle arms bent and the pump won't shut off on its own. Don't know if I somehow caused this or some other random issue.
Has anyone taken apart the compressure to get inside the gause so I can straighten out the pin arms? Any insights in my short lived compressor life? Feeling disappointed...

I would check your fill valve and see if it’s all working properly as for the needle in the gauge I don’t think that’s serviceable but you could contact GX they might help out I had a hole compressor replaced worst case I’m sure you can replace the gauge on your own dime

If the dead head test is successful, try this please
- Close the bleed screw on the Brancato valve
- Close the input/output on the Brancato valve
- Hook up the compressor and start it, then close compressor bleed screw
You are now simulating the dead head test but MUST keep an eye on the gauge
- when the gauge hits 2000psi open the input valve on the Brancato
The pressures will equalize, and the pump should be filling the tank
- keep an eye on the gauges and be patient
The CS-4 is a workhorse, but it is not fast
2000-4500 psi on a 9L bottle is going to take a long time

Hope this helps

To check your possible tank valve problem you might completely drain your tank (if it had any air in it at all) and remove the valve from the tank. MAKE DARN SURE TANK IS EMPTY. Then connect your fill line from the compressor to your tank valve which is removed from the carbon fiber tank. Open tank valve and then start compressor. Feel if air is coming out of the portion of the valve that would be inside the tank. You of course should feel air coming out. If not, your slow flow feature is malfunctioniing. I’ve not had one apart but it should be a simple poppet with a spring I would think. Regarding your auto shut off gauge. Every one that I have ever seen on low cost compressors are not impressive looking. I would never walk away from it while running. I would sit and watch it constantly. They should send you a replacement no charge if you’re under warranty yet.
Good luck.

Congratulations on the new tool. Being air independent is awesome. I have had my compressors for a few years now and would never go back.

Try this..

The pressure in the compressor has to be higher than the tank or rifle to work correctly.

Connect everything up but leave the tank valve closed.

Get the compressor to 2300 and then slowly open the tank valve. I hear a little 'whoosh' when this happens. Very Pavlovian!

The gauge needle is probably supposed to be like that.

Take some pictures and send them to GX before you modify anything.

They have a great warranty, do not sweat it.

PM me if you have any other questions.

I did do a dead head test. Seems to be working fine. Filled 2 guns with no problem. Trying to fill a tank was a different story. I guess next step is to contact GX. Very disappointing to have a problem with my new tool. Oh well.
I don’t think the problem is the compressor if you filled 2 guns. Evidence would suggest something else. I think if you try what squirrel suggested you will be good 👍

Will be experimenting today, some good suggestions. I already emailed GX pumps. I did find a video Joe made that explained the slow flow valve needle/pin can get gunked up and stop flowing but before I attempt to take the gauge assembly off the tank I need to try the suggestions here. Taking the gauge assembly off is another set of questions anyway. Will report back.

Thank you

You guys are the best. I have success. I went through in my head what I did yesterday and went through the set up steps and instructions again. Pretty much following Silentsquirrel's steps by step. The compressor filled my great white 9L from about 2400-4500 in 1hr 10minutes. I believe I was just impatient yesterday not seeing the needle move the first time I hooked up the 9L bottle. The other issue I believe is I opened the bottle valve too soon before allowing the compressor to build pressure. The gauge is still screwed up and doesn't shut the compressor off but at least the unit is working. Hopefully I get a gauge fix resolution fron GX.
On another note I was filling in my garage which is quite cold at the moment. Having an unusually cold day here in Virginia. We actually got a couple inches of snow. Well I digress point I'm getting at is because temps are quite chilly humidity is pretty low. I was surprised at how much water came out of the tube when I opened the bleed knob.

Thanks again

Update. Received an email from GX support asking for my order# and address. They will be sending me a new gauge. The email states it is an easy cable connection replacement. I'm feeling much happier with this pump purchase this am. I'll take pictures of the install when it gets here if anyone is interested.

Jerry - you should contact member jking and have him make you up a One-Way Valve for use when topping off your tanks. It will make the process easier and will protect your compressor. Also, you should be cracking the Bleed Valve every 10 minutes when filling your tanks to bleed off accumulated water.

Best fittings UK have one way with foster for a quick and easy set up.
Yes, but please be aware that a release valve (bleed screw) is also needed in line to relieve the pressure
I would go with @jking and give an AGN member some business.
But if you prefer a commercial product Joe Brancato makes them as well

just holding my breath

I believe that the OP's Gauge/Fill Valve Assembly from Joe Brancato likely has a Bleed Valve incorporated into it.

jking/Jimmy's price with shipping included was $7 less than Best Fittings in the UK and he had my valve made up and shipped to me in less than a week!
