H&N Baracuda Hunter Extreme .22 - most impressed

I have a P-mod set up as a carbine with a stock and a 2-7x Burris. Its my go-to critter gun, for sure. Shoots flat from 10yd. to 15 which is the most it will be used. We, as well as our neighbors, have a squirrel problem in our attics and they need to be "removed."

Took a crack at the swinging steel targets and found a few of these. Makes for some good fun, yet can't imagine what happens when it meets a squirrel.

What feet per second are you running? That’s massive expansion! 👍 looks like it will work for birds and squirrels really well. If the gun is grouping OK don’t be afraid to take it out further than that. Just have to learn the ballistic curve. I had the rifle marauder and it was kind of picky on pallets but once I found the right feet per second and the right pallet it was actually surprisingly accurate.

They definitely won't expand like that in an animal. I've been using the 18gr Hunter with great results on chipmunks and squirrels though, they are quite effective and consistent.

Be careful in an attic with that much FPE, you don't need much at all in close range for a squirrel and you need to be wary of the pass through and what the pellet will hit after it goes through the squirrel, or if you miss.

Maybe just me, but I would use a low energy .177 inside an attic. A 12 ft lb .177 is plenty for that job.

I've been using the Hunters and the regular Baracuda's. Great on squirrels and rabbits. Everyone always seems to have them in stock too.

The manufacturer, H&N, must be on top of their production planning and execution. 👍🏼

German engineering, not just top level when it comes to cars..... 😊

I found the regular Hunters out perform the Extremes in every way. They are my perfect squirrel pellet, They are super accurate at 950 fps and they always get stopped in the far side hide when taking heart lung shots. I measured a pellet from a 25 yard shot and it expanded to .375 in.

I'm glad the regular Baracuda Hunters work so well for you!

An expansion from a .2175 to .375 amounts to 72% — that's a 72% bigger hole you punched into that squirrel! 👍🏼

🔶 The calculated impact velocity must have been around 815fps — that's fast — and the "secret" to good HP expansion. 👍🏼

🔶 Of course, you achieved your expansion success by dialing up the power to about as high as accuracy will permit: 950fps muzzle velocity (36.5FPE). Good decision.👍🏼

The gun I'd like to shoot the H&N Hunters tops out at c. 30FPE, that results in 860fps at the muzzle. In order to still maintain an impact velocity like yours (815fps) I can only reach out to a lousy 10y. 😧

It must soon be Christmas, because I had a good soul offer me an extended plenum, and that will give me the 100fps I'm lacking. 😊 I'm really looking forward to trying this out!

🔶 I'm thinking of comparing the H&N Hunters with the JSB Heavies — by counting how many DRT's I get with each....
