H&N Slugs

Well, I used up the last of the oily, slimy slugs. I am having a devil of a time getting the new improved ones to shoot. Where I had half-inch 70 yard groups I now have 1.5". It was worse with my original tune. Not promising. Give me slime every time, I say. Any of you shocked by the appearance of your slugs, just send 'em my way.

Working up a new tune from scratch, even if it works, sucks up a lot of slugs and is not very appealing in these days of shortages.

Boy, these things are awful. 300 slugs in and nothing to show. Can't remember whether I struggled as much with the old slugs. Maybe I did and I'm spoiled. The cry of the Boomer is heard in the land: STOP UPDATING AND IMPROVING STUFF THAT WORKS!!!!

After seeing posts about the benefits of a "short pulse of high pressure" tune, and having nothing to lose, I gradually increased my reg pressure from my old 95b to 120. Got 960 fps with valve beyond 4th line. Then instead of reducing hammer to find the 97% knee, I just began closing the valve adjuster. I hit a point where the new H&Ns are grouping well again, and the chrono says 930. Go figure.

Well, that didn't last. Crazy fliers have developed. Switched to NSA 23 gr. .217 was the only size I had. Same thing: 3 or 4 in one hole then a wide flier. Tore down my rifle. Valve rod end appears bent. Maybe that was it all along. Won't know til the replacement arrives.
