Had to Share: H&N Sports new Slugs

This was posted on FB today:

For the next new product I need to write a few more words: the H&N HP Slug in .22.

In advance: This is a projectile that is still in the development stage!

For decades pellets have been made in the Diabolo-shape. This shape has prevailed because its light weight and low friction resistance in the barrel are the best choice for "normal" air rifles. The precision up to 50m can be excellent.
Pellets in bullet shape are due to their weight and their increased frictional resistance in the barrel only suitable for strong air rifles. However, they offer a decisive advantage: the air drag is significantly lower than with a projectile in diabolo-shape which leads to a flatter trajactory on longer distances.

Due to the development towards ever stronger air rifles and the wish to shoot precisely beyond 50m this shape becomes more and more interesting - if not even absolutely mandatory.

However, the idea of making a pellet in the shape of a bullet is not really new. The Rabbit Magnum or the Piledriver have been around for years. Especially the Piledriver with its boat-tail is characterized by an extremely favorable BC of 0.095 (caliber .22). In 2014, we developed the Grizzly from the hollowpoint lead bullets that we make for powder burners since decades.

However, all three products have a decisive disadvantage: they are only available in one diameter and one weight per caliber.

The weapon manufacturers use different barrel diameters, barrel profiles, twist rates and power setups for their air rifles. Therefore, there must be a choice of diameters and weights.

Like the Grizzly, the HP Slug has been developed from our hollowpoint bullets. The diameters, the lead alloy, the shape of the hollow point and the base have, however, been adapted to the special requirements for using in air rifles. Diameters will be .217 and .218. The weight range is currently 20 to 30 grain.

The exact shape and weight options are not yet final. We work with leading weapon manufacturers on the optimization of the HP Slug.

At the end, after all parameters are finalized, I would like to compile a list of recommendations for different brands/models.

So "Sluggers", go to FB and comments if you are interested, already post mine.

Always wondered WHY NOT … the folks who make slugs dont under size the actually bullet and then place 2 or 3 sets of contact bands around it.

Doing so would create lower barrel drag, seal nearly or equally the same and be able to pass threw a choke easier.

I don't get it ?

Both my Marauder and Liberty don't shoot them well.

At 15 yards they shoot like a half to one inch pattern. That means they are spiraling.

I asked H&N about adding a rear contact band to the piledriver pellet when I noticed that the rear of the pellet could be moved side to side even when seated fully in my rifles. They said that their manufacturing process would not allow addition of such. Seems such would do as you note for slugs but also would probably drop BC a bit?

That conic base will be crap. Write down what I'm saying. I have not yet saw a single slug that shoots well with that base. I hope they made them flat.

Not to burst your balloon but both my Liberty and Marauder shoot a "conic base" better than a flat base because of conical base. That's one of the primary reasons I'm looking forward to trying them. If they don't work out I'll be only too happy to say you are right and I was wrong.
