Tuning Has anyone put a regulator on a red wolf

Yes, I put a Huma bottle reg on my .22 RW HP for about 3 or 4 months, and shot with it that way at the TexTreme Benchrest in October 2020. It MIGHT be OK for .177, but for .22 HP you'll also need an additional plenum to go between the reg and the breech block. Altaros sells one. Even so, it will reduce the maximum power that you can achieve compared to a stock RW HP. You'll need to set it at 185 to 190 bar, ,which is at the upper limit of what the Huma can be adjusted to. After the TexTreme I removed it and returned my RW HP to the stock configuration since there was really no benefit to using it and some detriment... You would think that ES would improve, and it did, but not enough to make a difference, from perhaps 12-13 FPS to 9-10 FPS.

I have installed a Huma in the tube of my .177 standard Pulsar FT gun, and in that situation it did make a difference in consistency. I have it set to 145 to 150 bar, and it can shoot a 90 shot string with an ES of approx 6 to 7 FPS for the entire string with 13.4 RD Monsters at 815 FPS...

Both guns have HeliBoards.

We are about to do it with the FX bottle reg from the MK3, we are going to use 300 bar form the 300 bar carbon bottle and set the reg around 200, using the high pressure point on the curve to fool the gun into thinking it is seeing 200 bar all the time, this is more about increasing shot count at high power levels than it is consistency, we already made a valve block that takes the FX removable bottles.

Who knows what will happen but it wil be interesting to see, Centercut may be right in that the power will be limited though, it is with the FX removable bottles.

I appreciate the feedback from both of you. If I do decide to do it I’m going to have a 80 cc Plenum built. I would go with a plain regulator rather than a bottle regulator. Of course the bottle is going to stick way out.

I’m thinking I would set the reg way lower. Like around 2250.

Looking forward to seeing your results., And comparing notes.

thanks

When I did mine with the Huma bottle reg, I also used the Altaros plenum (14cc). The Huma also has small plenum space but less than 10cc.

Altaros plenum

Reg was at 185 bar. .22 RW HP. HeliBoard. Level 8 for 975 FPS with RDMonsters. PRIOR to reg install. AFTER reg install i needed to go up to level 9 for the same FPS. And going to level 10 only increased speed 10 FPS So obviously a larger plenum is required to get power back to “normal” with a reg. Efficiency also seemed to drop off a bit but I never calculated it. I decided the gun was better overall without the reg.

It supposedly makes it easier on the electronics since they are presented with a constant pressure. It’s easier to tune for one pressure plus or minus 5 bar than it is to tune for a 100 bar variance. Just so happens that the electronics are very good as is with that large variance. The new Delta Wolf does exactly that, regulate the input to the electronics. I’m surprised more people aren’t asking that same question about the dual reg Mavericks or Impacts?

Totally odd. And your ES supports that I assume? I know literally a dozen guys that shoot the Red Wolf HP in competition and none of us see what you’re seeing…. Maybe you should return it for warranty work? Personally I can shoot a 50 shot string of RD Monsters and the speed will be between 970 and 980 FPS. And that isn’t unusual. I’d like to see one of your shot strings that shows the gun acting like an unregulated gun…. Thanks.

You could theorise that the BC of the pellet can change from 250 to 200 bar as the engraving force into the rifling must be different, regardless of whether the velocity is constant.

Our experiment is to see if we can increase shot count dramatically, not only by using a 300 bar fill, but by making the high pressure point effectively act like the low pressure point,

We know that the limitation of the system is the lowest pressure at which you can achieve your desired velocity.

Yes agreed CC, most HP RW programs seem to use 200-ish bar for the LPP and get about 30 shots, we tried enlarging the valve block port to incrase flow from the bottle but it made no difference, what did make a diffrence was 4.5mm VS 5.0mm on the valve block though, almost 20% on some set-ups, valve core 4.8mm and breech block TP 5.0mm.

I also tried removing the pin and using a larger diameter pin with a straight through diameter in the valve block and bigger spring and running a custom HELIBOARD at 96v, this gave us 80FPE in .22 (34g .22 BEASTS) and 96FPE in .30 cal with the 50g JSB, but the rear screws in the safety block sheared and the end of the shroud blew out LOL!

The main problem seems to be how you increase the size of the plenum without pushing the bottle forward on what ends up looking like a tube.
There is plenty of room for a much bigger plenum if you could use the width of the space available.
The perfect solution would be a plenum with gauge and fill port that is the same diameter of the bottle.
It needs to be at least the same volume as the Delta Wolf (30cc??). Then it wouldn’t push the bottle so far forward.
I imagine it having a cover between the plenum and bottle to make the whole thing look like a continuation of the bottle.
It might look more balanced going back the the 480cc bottle. I don’t know what involved in engineering something like this. Maybe there are issues with strength if you make it wider although the power plenum on the impact is quite a lot wider than the Altaros.
The diameter of the cf bottle if 50mm. If the plenum was the same diameter and had a wall thickness of 5mm you would only need 25mm of length to achieve 31cc of plenum space.
Could work very well with the fx in bottle regulator to save some more space.

It’s something that might work really well on the AirWolf also.

When I go out to 200 yards, I see significant point of impact changes depending on fill pressure. I also notice smaller changes up close at 100.

The rifle behaves very much like any unregulated rifle, but the changes are much smaller.

You should acquire a HeliBoard. It would be money well spent and give you better results than the regulator in my opinion.
