Having fun trying to improve my shooting

So I finally moved to a place where I can shoot outdoors. I am really excited to get a chance to develop my own shooting skills and to more meaningfully work on finding the perfect projectiles and tunes for my guns.

I’ve been doing some off hand shooting with a 9 mm Rex P using iron peep sights. Took me a while to get it set up… I started at what seemed like a reasonable distance, about 35 m with a large target (8” gong)

At that range, the front post on the peep sight basically covers most of the gong and the post is a little blurry with my eyesight (too close to my eyes) so to some degree it’s hard to tell when to pull the trigger. A very different feeling from putting the center of a crosshair on the center of a bull’s-eye.

I’ve been able to get the gun zeroed enough to consistently hit the gong so I sketched a smaller target (traced electrical tape roll) and shot nine .360 round balls at it. The first shot was dead on by freak chance, and the photo shows where the following shots landed.

Between my unsteadiness, poor vision, lack of practice and the somewhat blurry looking front post, I was surprised the shots weren’t more scattered. This is probably an awful group, but it’s a step up for me. Looking forward to trying to improve on this. I mean issue is that “aiming for the center” is weird when the front sight / post is a bit blurry and larger than the target.

Try adjusting the sights so you can use a 6 oclock hold, rather than a center hold. For the steel plate, raise the rear sight to hit center of the plate when you put the front sight on the bottom of the plate (6 oclock). This will enable you to fully SEE your target. I shoot with both eyes open and kind of superimpose the front sight on my target or prey.

Good job though and keep the havin fun attitude. For me, any reason to shoot is having fun.

Agree.. a true 6oclock hold is all i use and was the compation target way with bulls proportioned to distance. As a 2" bulld at 100y looks the same size as a 1/2" at 10m so to say. A round/ball/lolly post is best (opinion)

You 2ed picture looks pretty good lol.. like me just right.. i just cant help it..lol, errrr..

So gave it a click then another ( should be 1 click = 1/10mm @ 10m ) unless you guns manual says otherwise.

I’ve got a 25 somewhere. I love shooting that thing though I can’t find the barrel extension / cocking aid so it is a challenge to cock. I should get a muzzle brake or air stripper and put it on the end for more leverage

I was shooting a rex p, which is a pistol in terms of a short barrel, but i had put a large air tank on it so it shoulders like a rifle.

I am building a little “range” - gong, tin can on a string, and now a bullet trap but am not shooting as much as I would be usually. I have moved east to help my father in his old age and I am staying with him while I search for a house nearby. He has great land for shooting but hates anything to do with guns, so I have to keep the range more or less out of sight among the trees, and save most of my shooting for when he is asleep or watching TV in his rec room. Somehow he’s got things twisted where watching hours of politics on TV is ok but shooting and airgun sports are a waste of time or trashy. Makes no sense

Same here i got it gifted to me and that was missing as well just got the stubby end.. i use a rag in my palm to cock and its much better and easier.

So got it out and at first it was sad. So a good barrel cleaning got me to this ..

I dont use any optics or peeps . Also its 10m . .177 cphp you know i got to shank at least one for good measure..

Tried again but my center was shifted about 5 inches to the left and down didn’t get one shot in the circle and about half of them went off the edge of the paper. That’s nine shots but only four were on the paper.

From where I’m shooting I can’t tell if they’re hitting the target until after I’ve shot all of the rounds. May have to step in closer. I will try another before the day is done I hope.

I am sort of on a hilltop and it is very windy here today but I’m not sure if it’s really affecting these heavy round balls at this distance.
