Head shot thread

First shot of the day. Chipsan Munkrallah was caught hoarding seeds and other supplies for his radical brand of seedlam, quickly dispatched for the safety of the surrounding critters.

(Tunnelling under my patio slab, causing cracks and need for expensive repairs, local titmouse intelligence reports chipzbollah HQ is located in these tunnels)

11.5y AEA 15.9 855fps.

About this morning

Question for you guys: took a squirrel this morning, about 25 yards with .22 Hades. Headshot right behind the eye, dropped on the spot and did the usual twitching… so I go to retrieve the sucker a minute or so later and he’s still breathing, heart beating. I’ve had that a couple of times before and now that it can take 30 seconds or a minute until the rest of the body realized that lights are actually out. Shot placement looked good but took a second shot point blank just to make sure. Anyway, coup de grace makes him twitch again, brain coming out the exit hole and eyes popping out. And he is STILL breathing a couple of minutes later, plus slight twitching of the arms!? I took a THIRD shot just because, this time vitals - why risk the animal suffering more than needed… I’ve got no issues with hunting but in the end you’re taking a life and should be respectful about it I guess and still feel a little something for the critter… Anyone ever experienced something like that? I shot probably 100 squirrels or so, 90% headshots and only needed one coup de grace prior to this, never had anything like this freaking zombie squirrel happen

So 99% of the time it's a guaranteed instant lights out. Freak incidents happen. Might damage only the frontal lobe, might not have placed enough pressure on the brain stem. The brain stem controls respiration and heartbeat. Sometimes that 1 in million shot happens. Ever seen the video about the chicken that was decapitated, yet live for quite some time. Weeks... The clever removed everything except brainstem. Essentially a walking zucchini, but, the chicken for whatever it knew, was gone.

Ask yourself. Would you rather just out of nowhere just cease to exist, no pain, no fear, no cognisance at all or what just transpired, or take a hit to the heart/ lungs/ liver... Which you will very much feel, and possibly be conscious long enough to gather what has Happened? Unless you've severed the artery feeding the brain and supplied ample hydrostatic effect, there is a larger than nil chance that enough Oxygenated blood will reach the brain to allow cognizant experience for although brief, still painful and terrifying moments. Even though there was breath and pulse, there was brain death.. it had no idea.

That’s reassuring! And agree, I’d rather have instant lights out, but I’d really want them out and not only 80% dimmed… gonna see later if I can figure what happened but I guess the second shot will make it impossible to figure what happened with the first. Freaking experience…

Just taken, back to back. The neck shot watched the head shot flop from a branch not 2 feet above the incident. Still had to have some sunflower seed. Recovered the pellet from headshot. Was sitting in feeder dish. Both taken with crown mk2 with 380mm, aea 18.1 @780 "backyard/econ tune" 24.6y

Day isn't over....

FX dreamline tac.. superior slug liner 1:16, Griffin LDC-HP 30GR dish base. 921fps....
The results are gruesome.. massive hydrostatic effect. Between the eyes favoring my right, his skull burst and brain came out the ears. Main body of the slug didn't pass through. Some fragments exited Laterally

As im finishing the last post. I hear the familiar rustle in the brush.... Welp. Another thief dispatched.

In the eye. Out the shoulder. That Griffin destroyed him. These things are incredible. Gruesome visuals, instant oblivion. Doesn't look merciful.. but this was total nervous and circulatory destruction instantly.
