Hearing Damage?

I suffer as well from tinnitus and slight hearing loss in the 2000 Hz frequency which I chalk up to being exposed to an indoor .30 cal rifle discharge without ear protection when I was younger.

Since then I've tried to be more cognizant of exposure to loud sounds, but accidents happen and like with air gunning its often taken for granted how loud these things can actually be.

hearing loss is a progression ( more and more loss ) you can delay it by wearing hearing devises . Most dealers will administer a free test with a long sales pitch to listen to , but it is a good thing to do if you notice even a slight turning up the volume type thing .
The Words "it is free" should inspire you to do so .

OK off my soap box.

After playing drums for 61 years & sitting mostly in front of guitarists amps for 58 of those years my hearing definitely suffered. I've had hearing aids for about 12 years now & been shooting airguns for about 7 years. Luckily my airguns are quiet (Bobcat,.22, Royale .25 & Boss .30 with a DFL Ronin). I'm EXTREMELY protective of what hearing I have left but MY airguns have made ZERO difference in my hearing in 7 years. My audiologist will attest to that. I have to say, until I got my hearing aids I had NO REAL CLUE as to how bad my hearing had become & how socially disconnected I was getting!

After getting into airguns, I've discovered that I'm more sensitive to sound than I thought. Even the mechanical noise of a bullpup irritates me. In fact, it's one of the reasons I'm selling my Lelya. The muzzle report is quiet enough, but that *tink* noise right next to my ear is too much. Actually, I'm surprised I don't see more people here complaining about bullpup action noise. Then again, given how many of you have hearing damage, I shouldn't be too surprised.

What's annoying are the many scam snake oil potions that try to separate you from your money, hoping you don't realize that once the audible nerve is damaged it's irreversible.
Similar to thinking you can turn toasted bread back to regular bread

I use these during noisy activities (lawn equipment, etc.). They don't color sound, just drop it down a few notches so you can still hear what's going on without distortion. Highly recommend!

If I'm shooting powder burners I use them under my muffs for double protection (y) 👂 (y)

The system is designed to tell you when there is a problem. Your discomfort means your ears are feeling damage, just like your fingers will tell you when the pot lid is too hot.
I have a couple of springers that I wear one earplug on the gun side, especially if I'll be shooting a bit.
This, precisely. It is why sound measurement is a generic, variable, that is a mean aggregation of levels and ranges. Listen to your body and protect accordingly. Sage advice and wisdom is being freely given by B-Mike.

One of side effect now reported this week from COVID 19 are cases of deafness, so if you already have tinnitus that would accelerate your hearing loss in some cases
Do we know if the CDC is recommending vaccinating our ear canals similar to the nasal testing and vaccination approach? I know eyes, ears, and respiratory ingress points are a major pathway for pathogens. I am worried we might start shooting up our eyes out after placing drops in our ears.

Example - Otisporin Otic
