Hello from a newby in central Ohio

Hello everyone,

I'm a bit new to airguns having only shot pump ones when I was a kid, and then getting a gamo whisper cat break barrel that isnt as silent as reported.

Now I've been looking at PcP airguns and pouring over videos and reviews trying to do my due diligence and research. Many are contradictory or just seem like advertisements.

Ill mostly be doing plinking, but wanting something to do small game like squirrels rabbits or cats. I want something reliable. I dont mind spending more for something better quality if theres a legit reason for it. I'm also looking at something quiet which is the draw to airguns with moderators. I'm wanting something quality, accurate, reliable, can shoot slugs or pellets, quiet and doesnt require alot of fiddling once dialed in. I'm looking at brk, the avenge x, fx but open to others. I dont care about brand names as long as its reliable accurate and good customer service.

Whats normal price for used air guns? Ive seen a few in various places but they seem priced high. I have a lead on a laminate FX crown mk1 in 25 but not sure what a fair price would be.

I'm going to a shoot near columbus ohio sunday and hoping to get some info there and look at various setups.

Any feedback is welcomed.

@MysticalDragon Welcome to the forums. Used airgun prices vary upon several factors maybe if you asked about the price range for a specific brand and model airgun, sellers, buyers, and traders may be able to better assist you in answering that question.

The following thread was created for members like yourself with similar questions.

With PCPs consider important and necessary support equipment, namely a fill source (SCBA tank, hand pump, or a high pressure air [HPA] compressor). You will likely need some spare o-rings on-hand as well as a cleaning kit for your barrel.

thank you missed it in my search and pouring over the info here and my lack of sleep.

@MysticalDragon No problem. If you’re not in a hurry to grab just any old gun to get outside and start shooting, there are several threads discussing similar things. Take some time to read through the forums. I’d stick to the more recent threads discussing air guns that are available today with good support, parts availability/repair centers, a decent warranty, and a good reputation so you likely won’t be in need of repairs. If money is burning a hole in your pocket and you’re itching to start shooting, I get it. Either way, good luck to you.

Nope wanting to take my time and do my research. I hadnt thought of Pcp's until I saw an ad for one and its lead me down this rabbit hole. Buy nice or buy twice, is a theme of mine. As is doing my research fully vs rushing into things.

@MysticalDragon welcome to the hobby! The PCP market is very active with many excellent products. FX is clearly the #1 in the premium space. I am relatively new and have only bought two brands, FX and Avenger. If you want economy, Avenger or Avenge X is a great choice. If you want higher quality, FX Daystate BRK and several Eastern European brands are all very good. If you can, actually handling the guns is recommended. If not, I would recommend FX or BRK. Happy hunting!

Hello, from South Central Kentucky. It all depends on your budget. For a low budget gun, I like Kral Arms. Excellent pellet shooters and simple designs. Benjamin craftsman series are excellent as well, all newer technology with side levers, not bolt action. Avengers are alright too, but too much plastic in the triggers for me. Moving on from lower end there is even more out there when the budget increases. It is a terrible rabbit hole and it is hard to stop. I like to trade so i tend to trade around til i find the things i really like, it helps to decide for me if it is worth the money or not.

Welcome to AGN. PCP's are great until you run out of air. How do you plan on filling the rifle? Something to consider. Compressors have really come down in prices. The GX series of compressors seem very popular as well as the Yung Hen model.

Welcome.
Columbus is a great place to be starting. If you haven’t, check out the Central Ohio Airgunners. They are mainly field target and BR, but a great group of guys. There will be many of them that can help with getting you what you are looking for. They also sponsor/host the Midwest Airgun Show each year.

Just like my automobiles, I bought "like new" pre-owned quality . . . in PCPS, traditional "steel and walnut" rifles from Daystate, BSA and Air Arms. My first rifle was a brand-new FX Crown Continuum in .25. My BSA R10 .177 was also brand new. Two of my Daystate rifles are older MCT electronic rifles. Amazing and reliable technology. Love them. All of these rifles are extremely accurate and reliable and ooze of quality while handling. I also put in my recommendation for the GX CS4 air compressor. I really love mine. The crown jewel of my collection was also bought new . . . American Air Arms Evol Paradigm in .30. The rabbit hole is indeed bottomless. 🍻

@MysticalDragon , welcome to the forum and OH …io.

Baker Airguns in Mount Victory has a very nice selection of guns in stock and very knowledgeable staff.

I am the National 50 match director at our club, Meeker Sportsman Club in Marion just north of you. We hold monthly outdoor N50 benchrest matches and bi-monthly indoor fun matches in the winter. Our next N50 match is 9/30 and your welcome to come up and ask lots of questions and see several PCPs.

If you are just getting your feet wet in PCPs the Avenger is probably the best bang for the buck in entry level rifles. They are more accurate than their price point suggests and are competitive at 50Y BR and will drop about any Varmint you draw a bead on. Taipan Veterans are a very popular, reliable and robust rifles in the $1K price range.

Thank you. I actually found their fb page and going to a shoot with them sunday. Hopefully I'll get some good answers when there

Thank you. I certainly appreciate it. I will certainly try to come out even though its an hour and a half away (Im 40 minutes east of cbus)

I'd love to find a group closer to newark but at lest theres a couple options that aren't too far.

I'll check out baker air guns. I do try to support local businesses if possible. Especially if they have good service and are helpful.

I forgot AAA Evol! Absolutely top quality choice at higher prices than FX.

I'm seeing the rabbit hole already lol. I went and participated in my first HFT match sunday. I had so much fun that I'm now looking at two rifles and making my list of minimum gear.
