Help me decide between a 3-9x40 and a 4-12x40 scope.

Tonight I ordered a Diana 460 Magnum Air Rifle and now need to figure out which scope to put on it. Since the 460 is on backorder (due in stock on 1/4/21), I have time to select a scope.

The two scopes I'm picking between are a Hawke Airmax 3-9x40 AO and a Hawke Airmax 4-12x40 AO. I need the scope to help my 70 year old eyes see better. The 4-12 is only $30 more, at a price is $239.99. I'm thinking I should just go ahead an just spend the extra $30 and get the 4-12. I'll be shooting 30-40 yards mostly.

I'd appreciate hearing any thoughts y'all have.

Thanks,

Bobby

Did you use the 20% off coupon NRA2020 does it still work or did you use the 15% off and free shipping?

Lots of Hawke failures even on non spring guns. Search this forum see for yourself the sheer number of Hawke scope failures and people who are just over and done with Hawke who will never buy the brand again.

Plus you best be sure keep your Hawke receipt safe because you need proof of ORIGINAL ownership in order to cash in on the warranty exchange since you gonna need it.

NEVER EVER buy a USED HAWKE unless it's REALLY DIRT CHEAP since theres no more WARRANTY! Same goes for MTC FALCON OPTISAN AND MANY MORE BRANDS! DUE DILIGENCE! DONT BE TOO HUMAN!

The 3-12x44 USO/Discovery/Etc seems like a good move. At least for someone interested only in lightweight FFP scopes with short (2-3" eye relief); @18oz.. Seems like the compromise is always in either weight, eye relief or focal plane.

Some of you guys shoot your airguns more in a day than i have in my entire life, I consider your opinions even if they aren't all applicable.

I purchased a 3 X 12 - 32mm UTG "Bugbuster" (aka: Mini-Swat but shorter) for just over $100 shipped. It's 8" long, has side focus, and is sharp, clear, and bright. I've owned many UTG scopes over the years and never had an issue or problem with any of them.

I'm 77, and my eyes have both had detached retinas, so my vision was saved with laser surgery, but is compromised to about 20/30. With the UTG scopes, I'm seeing 20/20 with ease! These light weight scopes have everything you need for a springer and they have stood the test of time.

Be aware they don't have an illuminated reticle, but I've never found need for that, as I don't shoot after twilight or dark.

Kindly 'Ol Uncle Hoot

PS: "Golden Years" my ass!!!!

I would get the 4-12 if shooting to 40 yds..eveything else being =equal. The other scopes are good and less$$.

What ever scope it should be springer rated, and the mounts shown are a good start.

Another thing ,the older we get the more light we need,=larger bell,I would not get a 32mm,though it does work good at shorter distance.

For sure rethink what you really would be happy with, have plenty of time to do so.

I do like my Hawke Airmax scopes.

Thanks for all the good tips.

I decided to go with a UTG Hunter IR 3-9×40 AO scope, especially since tall scope mounts are included. I looked at the scope on my FX Royale and it is a Nikon 3-9×40 Prostaff and its magnification is set at 6.

I may still end up getting that one piece RWS lock-down mount (for a 1 inch-tube) that Odoyle showed me, though. But I'll try the mounts that come with the UTG scope, first.
