N/A Help me spend X-mas money

Hello,

My Hastan 130s broke on me and it was terrible to shoot anyway as it was amazingly hold sensitive and big and heavy (note I come from a powder burner background). I am thinking it's PCP time. I live in a neighborhood with direct houses on two sides of the fence, but also a wooded area in the back with squirrels to coons, to coyotes. I don't really need something to take a coyote with...necessarily.

I am looking for something that will be a lot like my firearms in that once I set it up, I can not mess with it for long stretches and it will be good to go. Something quite, yet powerful. Sometime not way too big and heavy too. I am leaning towards the FX dreamline with the adjustable power lighter weight, but I want to make sure they are reliable and long lasting before I shell out that much money! The Avenger X looks promising as well and it's probably my second choice, but I must be missing some options. The Notos is cool size wise, but I am not certain about power for coons...I think I want to go .25.

So reliable, powerful enough for a big racoon, quite (or the ability to make it so with an aftermarket moderator), and not too big and heavy.

Thanks! Happy New Year.

Sam

I have the notos and it's accurate and quiet with the permanently attached moderator.. I suppose it's light with the included stock but if you want to put on the stock you can't use the available factory open sights.. unless you can take out your eye and put it directly on the stock.. I put my head so the temple was on the stock and still can't get the sights to line up, so you would definitely have to do a scope, red dot or something..
it shoots 780 fps with crossman premier round nose 14 grain pellets.. a bit quieter with jsb redesigned heavy pellets and it hits steel plates much harder than the 14 grain..
I personally wouldn't use it on a coon unless the other choice was beating the coon with it.. yes I once had a coon in broad daylight after my dog and when it saw me it came after me, only thing that probably saved me was a busted axe handle.. and once he had enough getting hit he went up a tree.. I didn't want to hit him but I definitely didn't want him to bite me as I believe he had rabies.. so I promptly got a gun and took him out of the tree..
others might differ but I wouldn't take a coon with anything less powerful than the 22lr .. unfortunately I have had to shoot several.. mostly the Henry golden boy 22.. but also 410 and 38 special so in my opinion I wouldn't consider anything less than a 30 caliber air gun.. coons are tough animals..
now back to the notos.. it's a good quiet accurate gun, I get 4 magazines per fill but I think the last couple shots are off the regulator.. with open sights I can easily get all shots on a 3" spinner at 30 yards and most shots on a identical spinner at 50 yards.. I think that's pretty good especially with a pistol that is too long for freehand shooting..
I bought it for a pistol, so I got the factory pistol grips and open sights.. as a pistol it's 22" long and I can't shoot freehand, half to rest the air tube on something.. I am in the process of taking off the factory moderator and shortening the barrel and putting a moderator inside the shroud.. that will drop it down to 16" long and hopefully reduce the amount of muzzle weight..
if you have any questions about the notos don't hesitate to PM me..
back to coons.. it's possible I suppose to kill a coon with a perfect placed shot.. but I have put several rounds of 22lr at close range right in the forehead before they stopped. so if you want the least airgun I would consider is the umarex gauntlet 30 caliber or SL30.... it's the lowest price gun that I would consider for a coon..

My standard recommendation is the Snowpeak (aka Artemis) P35 - or if you prefer the Stoeger Bullshark (basically the same gun). You can make it quite quiet with either hair curler mods in the shroud or a printed moderator in the shroud. Either is very low cost but works better on the P35. The Bullshark has a 40mm longer barrel which cuts down space in the shroud. But it still should work. The bullshark also comes set up for an external moderator but that's another $100 - or more.

I have a P35 in 177, 22, and 25. I think the gun works best out of the box in 22. I had to add a bigger plenum and drilled out some passages to get it up to almost 50 fpe in the 25 caliber. I killed a 8 lb coon with the 32 fpe 22 but it took several shots. I am sure the 25 would kill it fine now but out of the box it's a low 40s fpe gun. Might be a little light. There is apparently a P35X on the way, it is on Snowpeaks website but not available for sale anywhere I've found. It has a longer barrel and a big 65cc plenum. Should be great in 25. P35s are about 5 lbs and under 30 inches long. Bullsharks are about 6 lbs and the same length. They are accurate guns not overly reliant on plastic. They are less than $500. Even adding the plenum I added they are less than $600. There are few airguns this light and short making similar power - regardless of price.

FX's barrel is a big plus or minus depending on how you look at it. It is rifled externally so it has to be thin. So they make stiffeners for it and the guns are very tunable so you can get it to shoot. I'm sure they are great guns but I don't know how well they fit your "set and forget" criteria.

A Katran is on my current "wish list". It is less expensive than other guns with a CZ barrel. The Daystate Huntsman is another "high end" gun that is closer to $1000 than most similar guns.

If you like long guns I would definitely have the Avenger or Avenger X on your list. I have an original Avenger in 25 caliber. It is accurate and can be set up to be over 50 fpe with heavy pellets. I have it tuned to mid 40s now. I like it but don't shoot it a lot because it is so long. The original Avenger has too much plastic in the action for me but I hear the Avenge X has resolved that and other issues with the original. The external regulator is very nice when you are tuning. It can be converted to different caliber inexpensively and can be converted to different stock setups. The Avenge X bullpup is rear cocking which doesn't work for me (I shoot from my left shoulder).

Hi sir. Where can I get a Snowpeak P35? Thank you.

Got to handle an Avenger (original not X ) at the local airgun store, nice trigger and very quite as issued from the factory, light, balanced fairly well. Being a bit utilitarian "I" would pick it over an FX.
