Help me understand the reasoning with regards to high end springers

Last year I backed my TX200 HC down a little. I always thought it was the greatest springer I’ve ever shot. It wasn’t. Now it definitely is. I can shoot it better too. So that spells more trouble for what I’m aiming at. It was just a smidge too hot. Big power is nice if it doesn’t come at a cost. Some guys don’t mind shooting angry guns. Nothing wrong with that.

It's hard to know what power level will suit your needs. Springers are a bit clearer in terms of what power will make you *un*happy, which is to say you feel every ft-lb in the shot cycle and cocking, and most shooters who take a step down in power/weight never want that power back. Call it maturity, settling down, whatever, it happens like that. Backing down the power a modest amount really does help with accuracy and comfort to the shooter.

Outside of competitive situations, I agree it seems odd to haul around a magnum springer and shoot it softer than a mid-range springer. But I haven't done it so I can't comment further.

And yes, some compete in field target or other competition where 12 ft-lb is a limit. So sliding under that limit (or taking a Diana 54 and detuning it to under 20 ft-lb) is sometimes the reason. But I think most detuned springers are not in this category.

I only shoot springers. I started out with a Crosman Genesis NP, accuracy was okay out to about 25 yards. Then I bought a Benjamin Prowler and I had the same results as the Genesis. I put GRT III triggers in them which helped alot. Then I started buying cheap refurbished Hatsan and Ruger rifles and learned to modify their triggers, then tuned the internals but I couldn't achieve the accuracy I was reading about with people shooting Weihrauch springers.

I was frugal (cheap) I wanted the quality and accuracy of a Ferrari out of my Chevy Nova.

Wasn't going to happen. I could get great groups, to me that is, out of my tuned-up refurbs but not at 35 - 50 yards.

I was given an HW50S .22 and a R7 .177. Then and only then did I realize how much quality means.

@Struckat said, "People spend money on good products. Some will be happy with less. It’s all fine."

I agree wholeheartedly.

99.9% of the time I shoot either my R7, R9, HW50S, HW97K, Diana 34, or my Diana 460. I shoot primarily 30 - 60 yards expecting bottle cap or smaller results.

I get that with these German made rifles. Do I tune them as well, I do if they don't meet my expectations.

$1,500 springer shooting 25 fpe? LOL, count me in!

All fine indeed... How does under $275 shipped sound? IF you can find one, check out a Gamo "Hunter Extreme Pro" rifle in .22 cal. I've had mine for around a year now, shoots a 15.89 JSB at around 880 fps/27+ ft lbs. This rifle utilizes a gas ram powerplant, so maybe not a "true" springer. This model was available direct from GamoUSA ONLY for a limited time. With discounts available at the time, the cost delivered was about $250! Gamo is "sold out" now on this model, don't know if GAMO will build any more in the future. I was "sold" after watching a video/testing done by the gent at "Airgun Detectives". The example he was using for the video would group inside 1/4" or so, from 20 yards:eek:, pretty impressive I thought, and shot very well at longer distance as well. This at or near 30ft lb power levels. Check out his video/test of that rifle. Mine won't shoot quite THAT tight (1/4"), but still turns in quite respectable groups after a little trigger tuning. That's OK with me, as I mainly use the rifle for backyard "pesting" up to and including groundhogs. No "gotaways" so far. I fully appreciate the quality and workmanship that goes into, say, AA and Weihrach airguns, and would most certainly love to have a Weihrach 97/22cal walnut. But, for what I do with my airguns, I guess I'm part of the "some" group you mentioned. That is--- happy with less (money spent, that is).:);)

Time for someone to give me a quality sprinter😅

is that "Monkey Shoulder" worth more money than the bar whisky in the well? do tell
smooth is nice in a springer,, it is what 'hits the spot' the matters,,, each has their own taste to be satisfied
hard to go back to cheap stuff when you had a taste ,,, but I quit drinkin and tobacco, funneled that money into airguns, I still miss a good cigar and a sip

Not a fan of Monkey Shoulder. But I’m not much of a Scotch man😂

Like what has already been mentioned. I have a $1400 dollar Revere that only shoots 18 FPE. But to me, its about small groups. Same goes with springers. I can appreciate a nice smooth cycle from a platform that is rather violent.
@AirGoon has a stock you might want to look at @Florida_Man

I’ve had more 12 ft lb and under dead run offs than any 15 to .20 ft lb gun.. why take a chance on a run off.. I know ,SHOT PLACEMENT WARRIORS ARE READY TO POUNCE.. SORRY, even great placed shots sometimes they run.. I know everyone else was trained by Chris Kline ,but truth is it’s not always the gun.. We miss…. 10 ft lbs ,is usually below 600 ft per second and animals CAN AND WILL jump the shot.. Now 10 Ftt lbs in .177 is just plain senseless for hunting..

Remember ,opinions are just that. .. I know I’m not using a 10 ft lb gun to hunt. I respect the animals and want the advantage in my court.

I do have an advantage as I BUILD MY OWN GUNS. MY 15 to 20 ft lb guns are deadly and easy to shoot.
