Help with Break Barrel .177 Multi-Shot rifle

Hello everyone, 

Hope I am not opening up a can of worms here but would like some first hand knowledge. I am looking to buy a Break Barrel .177 Multi-Shot rifle that weights in the 5-pound range or less not counting a mounted scope. If you have some hands on experience with one or more models I would really appreciate your input and suggestions.

I can't think of anything that meets that criteria other than a Gamo Swarm Maxxim.

Hello, yes several of the Gamo's are right in that range including the Swarm Hunter .177 which with a scope is 6.4 pounds. I would like to know the quality and accuracy of some of the rifles.

**I just checked their owners manual and that gun in .22cal weights with scope 5.64 pounds

I hear good and bad regarding the Gamo Swarm. Some have stated they've had feed issues with the multi shot mechanism.

Hey again, I have been reading as many reviews as I can find on the G2 series and watched some videos. The only negative comment so far is the trigger and it wasn't a "bad", more of a - it could be better.

I have couple of custom powder burners, a 17HMR & a .22, that have silk smooth 2-pound triggers, but they did cost a bit more than the Gamo... what the .177 will be used for and the cost it seems acceptable.

Hello DonC,

Beautiful rifle but way too heavy for me. I am 80-years old and do not want to carry that much of a load in the woods on a hunt. 

Finding several in the 5-1/2 pound range but still would like some personal ownership input. It is not only the overall weight, really would like to know more about the use and operation of a rifle/brand/model.

Hello again, Ok after spending quite some time reading and reviewing, I believe it is narrowed down to two rifles: number one your suggestion, the Gamo Swarm Maxxim 10X Gen2 and second the Gamo Swarm Whisper. Not a lot of cost difference between the two rifles with the Maxxim a bit more expensive but has a number more features.

If anyone owns one of these guns I surely would appreciate any pros or cons that you can share.

The Gamos are fine assuming you don't get a QC nightmare. I have two, a .177 and the .22 Magnum. Both mag systems broke within the first couple of months of owning them. I replaced them and kept on shooting. A few months later, they broke again. Into the trash the mag systems went. Both guns are now single shot (the way God intended!)

As far as accuracy is concerned, you can expect about an inch at 25yds. Not bad, but far from great. For $150 though, what can you expect? The triggers are definitely hot garbage. You can swap screws around to get more adjustment, but even then, they're still pretty "meh"

You can't take reviews for these guns too seriously. Most, if not all, are from kids and guys like yourself that have nothing else to compare them too. It's their first gun, so of course it seems great.

An additional thought. You will need to save for a new scope. The one in the box will likely not last more than a couple of months. The one that came with my .177 lasted exactly 3 shots.... The one that came with my .22 magnum lasted a month or so. Long story short, just replace it now. My recommendation is a UTG Swat 4-16x44. Its built like a tank and works pretty well for what it is.

The problem with your "extra" scopes that you have laying around is that they may not handle the abuse of a piston gun like that. Believe it or not they are harder on optics than firearms are. UTG beefs the internals some to handle the reverse recoil that a piston gun creates.

I'm talking about the newer CAT triggers fyi. They are definitely better than the older Gamo triggers but they still aren't great. Once again though, its a $150 gun. There are going to be many limitations. If you're just looking to pop cans, squirrels, and rabbits, that gun will absolutely work fine. If you're looking for small groups and longer range accuracy, not so much.

All valid points ! A scope that survived on a .460 Weatherby Magnum will probably be killed on a Gamo Maxxim.

Good morning everyone,

I want to thank those that offered help and advice on which rifle would be a good choice to purchase based on my requirements. I placed an order this morning for a .177cal Gamo Swarm Maxxim 10X Gen2 and now looking forward to putting up some paper targets on my range and giving this rifle a good testing.

Hate to get off topic but I must. What caliber ? My father use to hunt mule deer in Colorado with a .300 WM. Wicked power ! 3500 fps with 150 gr speers!
