Help with tuning S410 for field target.

Hello,

I am setting up my Air Arms S410 to shoot at 20 ft.lbs.for field target. There is a lot of post on how to increase power but not so much on decreasing power. My main question is what weight pellet should I tune for, my rifle is a .22 caliber with no regulator so do I set up for 14.3 or would the 18.21 work better for field target. How close to the 20 ft. lb level do I want to be? The only way I know of to change power is to take the gun apart and change the spring, I have a bunch of springs and have been going nuts trying to achieve the 20 ft. lb level. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Jim

Since .22 caliber isn't the first choice for field target, it would be a mistake to shoot heavy pellets. Assuming great accuracy with them, 14.3 grain ammo would be better.

Whatever caliber, it behooves to shoot as close to power limit(s) as possible to still be sure you won't creep above the power limit.

If you're barely above 20 FP with 18 grain pellets, you might be below that with lighter pellets. Otherwise, a weaker hammer-spring (or cutting your's shorter) might be the easiest way to get there. If you then end up more below 20 FP than you'd like, put washers under the spring till you find the right power.

BTW, be aware hammer-spring changes also often affect fill-pressure sweet-spot.

I've been considering trying to set my .22 S410 up for FT as well. Does yours have a power adjuster? With the power wheel on minimum mine is doing 450ish fps with 15.89 JSBs. It would seem I should be able to get it just under 20 FPE at the peak if I get the power wheel set correctly. I haven't tried to set it up yet, just turned the adjuster to see if it was possible. The power adjuster is the silver knob just in front of the magazine.

If your 22 AA S410 likes the 11.75gr Predator GTOs and can do an inch to a tad over at 55 yards in calm conditions that may be a productive advantage in your 22 FT sub 20fpe venture when adjusted to shoot at 860fps.

I wouldn't chop any springs. I would remove it and bring it with you to ACE Hardware and buy a couple different tension springs of the same outer diameter starting with equal then 1 step weaker and 2 steps weaker. Be sure they are at least equal in length as your factory spring or longer since you cut them then heat the end on a flame and press down to flatten the cut end like a pro. Worst case scenario you start at a lower fill pressure. Crony string start to finish.

May luck out and no need to alter spring and just use the factory one as-is and only use the power adjuster.

Just going to state an few facts for you guys to chew on ......

Will start by assuming ... we're talking HUNTER PCP CLASS here ?

Being the class is Optics limited to 16X your ability to range well 40 and beyond becomes an issue that the SLOWER you shoot the LOOPIER the pellet trajectory becomes.

For most and especially a new shooter .. FASTER & FLATTER makes the game a lot easier !! So, if your shooting a .22 caliber the lightest pellet that remains accurate out to 55 yards is the one you want to use. What ever pellet this becomes it's speed must be kept to be under >20 fpe NO MATTER WHAT !!!

Here is the crux of the situation based on the above statements ....

Using a NON REGULATED rifle while shooting at SLOWER speeds any changes in Velocity will have the POI shifting high to low enough that one really will need to pay attention !! IMO, unless gun if kept filled to a fairly narrow pressure range the end results going to be a lot of frustration over and under shooting the targets KZ especially at longer distances.

I'm not trying to dissuade you ... just trying to state in matter of fact terms what your going to find and wish you to go into FT with the guns your choosing to use knowing there limitations. Nothing more.

YOU WILL LOVE love love the FT game .... It is like nothing else in the shooting sports world !!

That scope will be fine. If you shoot hunter class just turn it down to whatever your club says is max. Or shoot a different class, no bucket from a bum bag.

you could also talk to the guys in the club. Someone there will probably let you borrow a rifle for a match if they know you are coming. Their dope will be set up and no reason to mess with your stuff until you see if you even like it.

most clubs love having new guys and will do just about anything for new members.

i had a younger guy that shot with me for about three or four matches and we just shared my rig until he was ready to make the jump. When he finally did he knew exactly what he wanted.

If it does'nt have the external power adjustment ,I would install a regulator ,you will have the 40 plus shots you neeď right away.

The 30 ft lb unregulated guns are easy to convert.

You need to source some lighter hammer springs too optimise.Lightening the hammer would help too but that can wait.

Have the reg set to 100 bar with a short plenum spacer, talk to your vendor Lane or Huma about what you want.

All myy 22 cal AirArms showed a preference for 15.9 jsb so I would start with that pellet in the variousnbrand available. Go9d luck ,kelly

Kelly,

I do not have the power adjuster this is an original version with no adjuster or safety. I am having a really tuff time with out a reg as you sound like you already know. I had to source the springs from outside the us, nobody had the exact dimensions. If I fill to 200 bar I get valve lock and only generate 9-12 ft.lbs until I get to 150 bar and then I go up to 22-24 ft.lbs.

Thank you,

Jim

All of this thinking about an extra $135 regulator added investment to make it a sub 20fpe FT gun (IN 22 CALIBER!!!) brings me to suggest selling it as-is and using the money to buy a (DON'T LAUGH) $180-$220 (depends where you buy and use discount code or not) 177 Umarex Gauntlet and a $35 Hajimoto barrel band plus the $69 2 stage trigger. Or a 177 Hatsan Flash for $259 from Field Supply maybe cheaper if you find a discount code that works crank it to its minimum power then get 19fpe (Its a 29-30fpe 177 out of the box) you are better off going this route starting with the 177 Umarex Gauntlet IMHO. You may opt to spend more money for a Lothar Walther Benjamin Marauder Field and Target but won't significantly get any more accuracy if any based on what I have witnessed first hand between these.

Umarex gauntlet for FT .... ( sorry laughing )

TALK ABOUT A STEP backwards !!!

NOTHING PERSONAL ...

It indeed may be a huge step backwards (Class and quality) compared to an Air Arms. However a 177 Gauntlet with the recommended Hajimoto extras is probably still a more advantageous contender referencing 177 Gauntlet VS 22 Air Arms in the 20fpe class.

I will say this further .... being friends with one of this countries Best Field target shooters who has a habit of taking lessor guns and seeing what he can do with them as a serious FT rig did a GAUNTLET project @ 2 seasons ago shortly after the rifles were released. Barrel mods, barrel support devices, bottle to barrel supports etc ..... NEVER GOT IT shooting satisfactorily for the FT game, After @ 1 season of trying every conceivable mod he could ... GAVE UP.

While a good back yard / field gun .... a waste of money for a game where accuracy and consistency are required day in day out ... shot after shot.

The reg will work great just let lane or huma know your desired power ,very easy gun to work on and very reliable, kelly

Ps .If your not comfortable doing it ,lane has lots of vids and tutorials and motorhead could do it ,I' m sure .
