HFT Question - BSA R10 Good/Bad? What caliber?

I'm considering getting into some field target shooting. There is a club about an hour north of me, and at least one other person in my area that shoots there.

I've been looking at a few rifles - I'm leaning towards a BSA R10 MK2 rifle. Seems to be very accurate, and has a great trigger from what I've read. It's also in my price range.

Any thoughts on the R10 for field target?

What caliber is best? I know it has to be limited to 19FPE max.

Any help/thoughts would be appreciated.

Most FT guys shoot .177 to take advantage of the flatter trajectory, so if it's a dedicated FT gun that's what I'd recommend. That being said I've done very well with my .22 Marauder tuned down to 20 ft. lbs. I would love to try an R10, haven't had the chance yet. I've found that shooting those 1/2" circle targets at various ranges is good practice.
Good luck!

eohlinI've read about people upgrading the regulator...but didn't realize why. How hard is that to change? Did you do that yourself?

Can I ask what scope you use?

Thanks for the reply!

Eric, There is a you tube video that shows you how to change the reg. Google BSA R10 Huma. Yes I did it myself, its easy. I have a Hawke 3-12X scope, I forget the exact model.

177 is what you want. You may want to look at the air arms s500 as well. I have been incredibly happy with mine. I also love the Hawke sidewinder scope with the sr pro reticle. It ranges pretty well and the reticle has aim points to work well with all my holdovers. One issue with the BSA is that it loads from the left and you will have troubles fitting a large side wheel.

I ended up buying the BSA R10 MK2 .177 and a Hawke Sidewinder 30 4-16x with the SR Pro reticle.

Gun is actually waiting for me at home...can't wait to see what it looks like and how it shoots!!

Bought some JSB and some Air Arms pellets to test as well.

I did notice the left hand load of the mag in the BSA - not sure what I will do with a big wheel - might have to get creative, maybe one of the half moon style wheels that would allow clearance in a certain position.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'll post a pic once I have it setup!
