HFT Rangefinding

"Hunter" if Piston or PCP is a max 20fpe class.
yes you can shoot it at 12 FPE w/o issue.
Parallax focus / articulation is the primary miens in judging ranges ( if not bracketing using retical scaling to determine distances ) and used in all classes of Field target domestically under AAFTA rule structure.

Your Q ...
is a WFTF bracket available at most events?

Not understanding this question

There is a WFTF class in Piston division, but few FT matches turn out enough piston shooters to dilute the Piston division shooter between the three classes (also Hunter and Open). So, often Piston shooters and Match Directors face a choice of them either shooting against all three classes of Piston Shooters (if there are any other Piston shooters), and/or shooting against PCP division shooters in their proper class.

I saw mention of WFTF rules on the AAFTA page and wondered if this is another division at matches for rifles that meet the power level and any other requirements.

If I ever make it to an event I'll contact the match director or club to see what's available and expected classes.
Thanks!

It would always be safest to check with the MD first. But, at any FT match that uses AAFTA rules you should be able to shoot Hunter, Open or WFTF classes with either a PCP or spring piston gun (making a total of 6 unique classes). But, for the purpose of handing out awards, any of the 6 classes with a very small number of participants (1-3) may be combined together or with other classes. But, you should always be able to participate in the class of your choice.

I had wondered the same thing about the Piston classes at first as well. The guys that shoot springers at the matches I’ve been to are both under 12ftlbs, but still shoot Hunter with low powered scopes. I guess it is their choice.

When I picked up my TX200 to set up as a second FT rifle, I wondered similarly to you, if I could just put a bigger scope on it and shoot WFTF and not have to deal with the scope limitation. But I decided to just stick to Hunter, even though my rifle is only 12 ftlbs.

Parallax can be dialed in all classes, as it is your primary ranging method.

Indeed HOW YOU CHOOSE TO SIT / Or Can sit ? pushes you towards a specific class.

Hunter shooter ONLY get to use shooting sticks / bipods if wanting too and ONLY Hunter gets to sit on a backless stool or bucket if wanting too.
Hunter is a max 16X on scope and CAN NOT touch turrets or click for POI changes.
Piston or PCP sub classes with max output of >20fpe

* Tho will state those shooting Hunter Piston are generally around or under 13fpe For best gun control & reduced recoil.

Want BIG POWER optics and or Click for POI change & like palm rests, butt hooks etc ...
At sub >12 fpe the world federation class of WFTF
At Sub >20 fpe and a few other apparatus allowance the OPEN class.

You have choices and the rules of each are clearly expressed within the AAFTA rule book.

I haven't heard of any FT clubs or MDs that didn't offer all divisions and classes. However almost all are faced with how to handle as few springer shooters as most see at any given match. So how they handle it often varies from match to match.

Becomes more complicated when awards are involved. I don't give awards for less than three shooters in a class or division. So let's say there are three piston shooters at an awards match; two Hunters and a WFTF. I can let them all compete for one Springer Division award. Or they can each compete against the PCP shooters for Hunter Class awards five deep, or WFTF Class awards three deep. As a match director, I would ask them what they would prefer.

One Hunter wants to compete for the five Hunter Class awards, the other Hunter wants to compete for one Piston Division award, and the WFTF piston shooter wants a participation award!🤬

What would Match Director YOU do?:rolleyes::unsure:😱🥵😵‍💫

Heres the solution I came up with. AAFTA says for a GP you need to have 3 to award a first, 5 to award top 2, and 7 to award top 3. And we follow that. But in addition to that, if we have 3 or fewer in a class we still give up to 3 awards per class, IF…….a PCP shooter scores better than 80% of the match high score or a springer shooter scores better than 65% of the match high. Doesn’t matter if there are only 1 or 2 shooters in a class, they can both receive an award If they meet that minimum criteria. I came up with this because we were giving away some really nice donated prizes based on sum of points for top three placings over the course of the season. I didn't want someone shooting a class no one else was signed up for just to be able to lock up a first place every match and win the prize without scoring well or really competing against anyone. It worked rather well and we plan to continue it even if we aren’t giving away prizes. And we obviously never combine classes.

For HFT you can use a maximum of 16x, and you use your reticle for elevation and windage. You are not allowed to change your power or move your turrets. (This is how we shoot at my club, so…..) you judge your distance with your parallax. From my experience a good way to set up (if shooting 20 ft/lbs) is to use .177 JSB Monsters 13.4 grain, (the original version not the redesign) use a 30 yard zero, and push the pellet at 800 fps. I do not have any experience with 12ft/lbs. most of all is to get out there and do it, and shoot a lot, and have fun. The hard thing is knowing when to stop buying equipment……

My advice: Just show up and shoot. You'll have fun regardless and find out what you need to know and what class you want to work towards fitting into.

As a piston shooter most of the time myself, I can say that you will be in a minority most always and may get shuffled around anyway.
I agree 100%. I’m in it for the fun.
