HFT Ranging Question

I've observed & shot with some VERY good Open class shooters ( Past National champions ) and most stable & consistent of them uses ALL the AFFORDED GEAR ..... Wears a jacket, uses a glove, sometimes a single point sling in shooting offhand. Sits on a low bag, uses a mechanical thigh rest to lock in the no cant position of rifle, adjustable hamster with a custom foot to best suit his knee position no matter level, up or down shooting.
Some past national champions in Open classes didn’t use any of the “AFFORDED GEAR”.

Sure the extra gear can help some people, but it’s not always a requirement to win.

Mike Vrendenberg used to beat up on us North Texans using only a harness and Daystate Grand Prix. No jackets, knee pad, gloves.

What are you thoughts on a 5.9" stool in Open? Or one of those platforms for sitting on like are sold for turkey hunting ...as long as total height under 6" it'd be legal right?

And when I first started in ft back in the 12x days I shot in Hunter, but from either a 1inch pad or a bumbag, and using sticks....was I legal? Is there another example of a backwards way of saying it in the rules in regards to sitting on a bumbag and using sticks in Hunter?

Yes. That backassward approach also rears its ugly head in the Pistol rules. I've been caught by that booby trap more than once; once suffering disqualification as a result (after posting high score of the match). 🤬 The MD was just too smart for me!

As exposed in one of my books, Vredenburg is a space alien!👽 Unfortunately his last RoT Champion title was captured against an Open field of just one. Don't think he's shot an FT match in the ensuing two years. That's truly unfortunate, however I can understand why a top competitor might lose interest after having no competition whatsoever in a state championship.

That's one great thing (of several) about Hunter Class. Typically more Hunters than all other classes combined; hence the most competitive class. The more, the merrier😍 in my book!

With all the crepitus in the TX area, that surprises me.

Always hear comments about people moving to Hunter b/c the bumbag was too hard to get up and down from.

Interesting.

All the crepitus in Texas emanates from the fact all Hunter Class Texans are either retired bull riders, griz wrestlers, or (in my particular case) wooly mammoth hunters. Scientists that studied prehistoric Human bones were surprised to discover injuries to cave men (professional hunters of big, mean animals with nothing but sticks and stones) were identical to those of competitive bull riders. Having recently retired from all the aforementioned pursuits, it doesn't surprise me at all.

Lest we forget ... Bovine mud Wrestling.
After all that work you still need to knock em down !!

Yes. For 20fpe(aafta) field target you can sit low with a bipod. I have tried my bumbag but the bipod I have is just too tall, hence the turkey hunting seat.

Don't forget the Girdle...! ;)

@Michael If you have any questions please feel free to drop a line at [email protected] we can sort you out.

One thing not mentioned in this comment section about ranging in the Hunter Field Target (HFT is different to US version to be clear).

Because ranging accurately below 30x is a crap shoot past 45 yards with most if not all scopes. Bracket ranging is almost a must.

What setup do you plan on using for Hunter?

On the topic of bracketing, I was amazed to discover that you can get your bracket dope in Strelok Pro. Using the reticle view, you set up a target that is 7.6" x 7.6" (which is the actual size of an 8 inch cinder block). Assuming your scope data is good, you can see what the bracket is for the far yardages. Everyone else probably knows this, but it was a real forehead slapper for me. You can also make a 1.5" circle to bracket on kill zones, but it's more difficult than blocks. I would generally trust my gut instinct over a bracket on a kill zone at 50+ yards.
